I remember the 302's from the 1960's and 70's with the 4 digit headcode displays, ladies only compartments and the 1st class corridor compartments.

Yeah they got replaced by a 357 electrostar units one of which you can see arriving into the platform on the right

Great to see this "gem". Very professionally operated (procedures, studio, presenter skills) for such a small station. The video needs de-interlacing though, then you'd get no "combing" effects from motion - and if done right (optical flow ' motion-compensated) you'd get double the resolution and also double the frame rate. Wish there clearer stills/photos of the transmitters and transmitter site aerials (couldn't tell where the medium wave antenna "pole" was. Garage transmitter huts reminded me of one episode of pirate radio comedy "People Just Do Nothing" (BBC TV) - but I'm sure that's their only connection!

Just to think in less than 2 weeks this will be exactly 30 years ago. Mind blown...

An Aunt had a flat near the line and we often crossed the footbridge there. Whilst the line was in use. The footbridge that has now been swallowed by the trees and undergrowth. A marvelous collection of ambient sounds and nostalgic sights. One feels even more ancient when you read that the Networkers that replaced these are now being withdrawn! 🙁

Oh this brings back memories. I worked at East Ham depot as a mechanical and electrical engineer and serviced the 302s, 305s. 308s and the 310s and 312 EMUs. I remember that day clearly and was sad to see them go. Easy to work on and to maintain. Now no character in the new units. Like steam engines, each unit was unique and had its own character. 302 201 was the last unit I worked on before they went to scrap. Still have photos of her.

A Class 310's lovers wet dream - really miss these units, shame that not a single one of them was saved. Thank you for the memories of the sounds I used to enjoy as a kid bashing these round the West Midlands, the unmistakable sounds of the compressor, the brake release and the camshaft tap changers live on!

I rode on that day too from Fenchurch street to Rainham, wasnt spotting trains then, more into buses, but still, miss the slam door trains

302's were good to drive.... preferred the 310's and 312's personally, but, still good units. As were the 305's. Block brakes - give it full ep brake hitting the platforms at 40, then release the brakes just before coming to a stand so as to not end up in a heap when stopping :) nice video - takes me back.

As a kid I used to love looking at the combination of liveries when they were multipled to 6,8,10 car trains. Great video, brought back some good memories 👍👍

These units were pretty fast even by modern standards. One was diagrammed to depart Kings Cross on the down fast around 3 minutes behind the Tees Tyne Pullman which was a HST. Quite often it would catch the HST up on a double yellow until the line speed hit 105 and the HST would leave it.

Great filming, I lived in lower Sydenham often used to visit the box at Addiscombe on Saturday’s done loads of filming there, even a ‘Bouncy’ cab ride from Elmers End to Addiscombe, on an EPB! I also remember the sad day going there when some mindless morons had set fire to the signal box, and burned to the ground, all that history gone in a moment.🤓

and if you scrape away all the modern fancy paintwork from the 302s, you will find Dark Green and the head-code display on the ends for the times back when there were no travelling head-code displays in the signal boxes.
