Great info 👍👍 Thanks! I am considering an Okuma Rockaway Surf Saltwater Spinning Rod - 10ft for this same type of fishing with 1 Oz spinners, but I can’t decide between the Medium Light (1/2 - 2 Oz , 8-17lb) and the Medium (3/4 - 3 Oz, 10-20lb)… Any experience with these rods?
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 7 күн бұрын
@@Benjamin-qr3yx I have one. I would go with the ML version if you want it for casting spinners, they are pretty sturdy rods. Also, I don’t like how long the butt is on that rod, I think it would be difficult for casting over and over again.
@Benjamin-qr3yx
@Benjamin-qr3yx 7 күн бұрын
Thanks 👍 The butt does look quite long 🤔 I’ll probably go with the same rod you’re using then; it seems hard to beat for the price.

By the way, which model Okuma Rockaway Surf Saltwater Spinning Rod would you recommend for plunking (Columbia SS beach style location)? Thanks
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 7 күн бұрын
@@Benjamin-qr3yx I don’t plunk the Columbia much, but for that you’d want the heavy one because you’ll want to be able to cast 8-12oz to hold.

couple years ago picked one up myself. Purpose was surf for stripers & halibut here in CA. Was able to take it out to get sense of it. Was sensitive enough and casted 4oz like a dream. Had my Tsunami Saltx 6000 with 30lb Power Pro SSV2. It was pretty nice for my purpose. Agree it's definitely a bit bendy for sturgeon. I have a different brand 12' rod for bigger critters & creatures.

Thank you for mentioning the use of leaded line for the buoys. It always is risky when boating near crab buoys because many people just use the cheap floating nylon line. If I use nylon line I insert lead core into it near the buoy to sink the line. Thank you also for attaching the buoys in the right direction.

I don’t think it matters too much, but we always secure the tag end with zip ties and then wrap it with electrical tape because that lead rope doesn’t cinch down very well. Hope that helps, and good luck out there.

June 11, 2024-- I purchased this exact rod in 2021. Because I have had a long term illness, I didn't use it until last week. Using a red/white bobber and 1/8oz weight, the pole broke 1 1/2ft from the tip. Fluke? I;m sticking with Penn.
