With great footage. I like both versions but the second version when the General is dying. And he asked her not to leave him. Shearer and Veidt are superb. This could’ve been a great movie. I can imagine what Thalberg would have done with it. I think he would’ve replaced Robert Taylor with a real actor. Robert Taylor was just awful in this movie. Philip Dorn (the Nazi doctor) would have been excellent as the American. I wait for the scenes with Norma Shearer and Conrad Veidt. The subplot with Bonita Granville should’ve been filled out more because even the tension between the two characters of Madame and the schoolgirl are also compelling. But then Robert Taylor has to come into a scene - Ugh …..

What a joy & delight to watch. Thank you SO much for uploading for us to enjoy! The late great Mr. Veidt was one of my favorite actors. Wonderfully talented gentleman & real class act. Bless his heart. He left us much too soon.

Apparently this film survives incomplete, 47 minutes from original 90 minute version. Veidt plays a painter infected with syphilis. It also stars Walter Rilla as a doctor and Mary Parker (Magdalena Prohaska) as Veidt’s wife who he infects with syphilis .

Fun fact: Apparently to do Conrad Veidt’s rather Iconic smile they hooked a set of dentures in the cheeks of his mouth which pulled back his skin. This was apparently extremely uncomfortable and I can only imagine how painful it would feel.

A very good man! If I understood correctly, his wife was Jewish. Seeing what was happening in their Germany, both left for the United States. He abandoned a very successful career in Germany in order to insure her safety. I regret that he died at a relatively early age.
