There is nothing better for the average man. Everybody has to start somewhere. Religions may be bad, but it's not like people would be better without them. The same evils would exist without religions. Maybe to an even greater extent. At least, they offer some things to think about and study and argue, which is a step in the right direction. I wouldn't say religions turn people against each other. People are already against each other. I'd say lust+greed are worse, usury is worse, idolatry is worse. Religions teach people some good things. Depends upon who's teaching them. Depends upon who's listening and their ability to understand.
