I made chainmail for my 1/6 doll, but because I didn't want to actually make each ring, I bought a sheet of already made chainmail and just worked them into the armor shape I was going for. feels a bit "cheating" but making the armor with it was hard enough lol, and I loved my results I got.

I looked at the little chainmail sheets but I wasn't happy with the scale. I need to learn to be less picky apparently XD For the sake of easiness

@LomisPlayground ah yeah I can understand that lol, I also heard people using chainmail gloves and like and taking them apart and rebuilding them to fit a doll, however I feel at that point t might as well learn the actual thing😂 either way I'm excited to see what you do!

Ok, so when you get a new camera, and all your dolls dressed the way you want them, you need to do a stop motion of a scene from one of your books. 🤣 Kidding, but that would be fun.. Probably not for your, as it's a LOT of work. Love the tabard!!!
@LomisPlayground

Oooh my goodness LOL So many people have said they would like to see me do stop motion, but I will be the first to confess that I choose my dolls based on aesthetics instead of engineering, and most of them can't hold a pose worth anything at all XD I would love to do more photo stories based on the books, though... maybe combined with some video footage like I did that one time for a reel on Instagram.

Ooh, I'd love to see more videos about the embroidery! I have a very similar machine (different model number I think) but i haven't used the embroidery aspect for it yet because I'm not sure how to approach digitizing designs for it.
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground Күн бұрын
I'll see if I can figure out a project that will let me cover the software and digitization process! It's really not as hard as I thought it would be, though I am still learning all the ins and outs of the program. A basic design like this though is a piece of cake.

i'm really excited to see this project come together, because i'm working on a very similar outfit for my own doll, and i know i'm going to be taking a lot of inspiration from your work. (i already have, in fact! i never would have started working on this doll if i hadn't watched your videos and realized i could make my dolls into my own original characters!) man, i wish i had an embroidery machine, though. hand-embroidering my doll's heraldic emblem on his tabard is going to SUCK. possibly even WORSE than making chainmail, if only because i feel like i'm very bad at embroidery.
@LomisPlayground

I'm really glad it's inspiring you! Just remember the only way to get better at something is to do it. Trying is better than nothing at all! I enjoy embroidery, but I find I have a hard time finding the patience for it... the chainmail is teaching me a lot of patience, haha.

How loud is the embroidery function in action? Is it unpleasant?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground Күн бұрын
It's really not bad at all, for the most part it just sounds like the sewing machine is running. The hoop motor has a little bit of a servo sound, but its whirring isn't as loud as my 3D printer and it can't really be heard unless I'm sitting right there. I usually set it up and let it run while I do other things in the room.

Real clever to have Skyward Sword's Hylian Shield paired with the Master Sword in Twilight Princess. Hylian Shield on Link's right arm and the Master Sword in his left hand. If Nintendo decides on another Hyrule Warriors collab w/ Koei Tecmo, they should keep left-handed Link as the main protag, his green tunic over his chainmail and his long-sleeved shirt, his green hat on his head, his pants, and his boots from Twilight Princess's era, but w/ Skyward Sword's Hylian Shield (horizontal carry on his right arm) paired with the Master Sword (and the back scabbard in Twilight Princess).

American Girl dolls are a little unusual, but I've found using the standards for 1:3 are usually the closest for them. They might still need a little adjustment, but it'll get you in the right neighborhood!

I only have one doll that has a CoA (the others I 3D printed), but I think I'm going to try this as well. Some time back I got MissyImaginings registry files to give myself a way to easily keep track of measurements and such - and while it does have the option of a CoA pocket as well, it doesn't really have a way to personalize it for each doll. This does that - and since her pages are half-letter size - has the bonus of also functioning as a divider sheet between each doll... since I also have a project list and individual project pages for each doll as well. I keep everything in a half-sized loose-leaf binder, so won't need the fancy binding... ... Even though part of me is hoping your final versions of the coiling rod do make it to Thingiverse or Printables... even if I don't have the coil punch. The hindbrain is bouncing at the idea of making my own spiral bound sketchbooks... =l= Great video as always!
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 17 күн бұрын
That's a great idea to keep the measurements with the dolls! I should probably make measurement info sheets to keep in with mine... I understand how appealing the idea of the spiral notebooks is, I was not able to resist LOL I saw the punch go on sale for $35 with free shipping and I was like yep, don't need that, getting it anyway. The shiny new tool impulse is hard to resist. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my coil spools... I think making them a little taller might be better, and more sizes? Hmm...

I have a question about the numbers featured on the sealants usable for airbrushing, I wanted to buy the Vallejo matt polyurethane varnish with the number 27.651 but I don't know if I would need thinner for that or if water would be an adequate thinner as well, if need be
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 17 күн бұрын
Great question! The polyurethane varnish is still usable for dolls, but it tends to be a lot thicker so it will require more thinning and as a result, will need more coats to ensure full coverage. Water is always an acceptable thinner for water-based paints, so no worries there! Vallejo only makes water-based paints, so it's safe for their entire line. The primary advantage of using airbrush thinner or flow aid as a thinner is that it reduces surface tension of the paints when thinned so it's less likely to bead up when applied. However, I've thinned tons of paints with just water and had no problems at all. The primary differences to be aware of are that Vallejo's polyurethane matte varnish is less matte than the acrylic matte, but the acrylic matte is one of the flattest sealants I've ever used so it would be hard to compare to that anyway. Just be prepared for the possibility of a slightly dewy finish rather than something ultra-matte... and also, polyurethane can be more prone to yellowing over time than the acrylic varnish. This can be reduced with a UV-protective top coat if that's something you're interested in. Hope that helps!

A good option for getting some scale chainmail without having to make it all your self is to purchase and strategically pull apart a Cut Glove. they're gloves that are meant to protect your hands from knives when chopping food so theyre made of tiny chainmail ^^

See, I actually looked at some of those online because it seemed like they'd be a great option... but after I factored in how many gloves I'd need for a 1/3 hauberk, it was so expensive!! I guess because you have to pay for all the time they spent putting the rings together... XD Which I am now doing myself LOL

I know you mentioned already starting the chainmail... but if you are wanting a slightly faster interim option, I have two possibles. One: the purl side of knitted stockinet stitch has been used frequently as "faux chain". Extra bonus - less likely to scratch (depending on the type of yarn used). Two: there are a number of 3D printing styles of chainmail on both Thingiverse and Printables. Most of them are print in place, and a few of them are parametric, so you wouldn't have to finagle scaling as much. Oh! And as a bonus, while I was digging through the two websites, I stumbled onto "EVA foam chainmail". After looking at it... well, I'm still hesitant to using EVA foam in my laser cutter, I am wondering if I could create a wire jig that would have a similar result.

Thanks--I may consider some temporary options! I spent a lot of time trying to find premade fabrics that gave the look I wanted but ultimately nothing had the realism I wanted... aside from actual rings. But he'll be waiting a long time for me to actually finish it LOL
