I just came across your video and faced palmer. LOL. I am in the middle of making a 12" x 12" x 1 1/2" bending jig for hooks and scrolls. I have hours invested in it, and your jig is easy and done in 30 minutes. Lol. I tilt my hat to you, Sir! Thank you for reminding me to keep it simple. 🙂

Also, I'd say use the wood blocks for grip inside of a vice or even just a clamp. I think stability should always be a priority when it comes to smashing something. I have suffered too many bruises and punctures to risk it anymore. Once I sent an impact Phillips through the webbing of my left hand while trying to get an awkward screw that last 1/8 inch into an unstable object. Learn from my mistakes.

The hammer with the nails is a damn shame. What a beautiful blackened handle on that one. It was either ancient or someone took a very long time making it to their liking. Or both.

From Airgas MSDS: "Fumes from the welding of stainless steel and other alloys contain nickel compounds and chromium [VI] and [III]. Ozone is formed during most electric arc welding, and exposures can be high in comparison to the exposure limit, particularly during metal inert gas welding of aluminum."

This is sooo much easier than what I did! After realizing crushing it w/ a hammer was insane, I weighed out the amount I needed (3lbs for 30lbs green sand), put the clumping litter in a small trash can and added h2o while stirring to make a pancake-like slurry. ( It gets viciously thick very quickly, so you're better off starting with 1/3 litter and more water, then adding litter and water as you go.) Then I spread out a bunch of 6mil plastic sheeting on the driveway in the sun and smeared the slurry on it. It took two days to dry but it was nice flaky stuff that I can crush up by hand. Like I said your idea was way better! Thanks for posting this.

Don't the blades get dull - really fast?
@jeffreysanto

Not really, a hammer mill does not have blades. Think of it more as pulverizing it into powder rather than cutting the material.

Thanks for the great jig! I made one the day after I saw your first video and used it on next project. Ended up making another for to allow two simultaneous setups. I made a third for a friend, only used three 1/2" squares. I ground two to round above the drilled holes, so ends up the same function as rounds, but have perfect alignment in a vice. I also leave all in place, just flip the unused one over so it is out of the way, but helps to provide more even pressure across the vice jaws. Great tool and eliminates a bunch of non-adjustable ones of various fixed sizes. THANK YOU!

Thanks for this review Jef really informative I'm just hoping that this will work as well on a T6 aluminum as I don't have a lathe machine to make this kind of hole and I'm planning to do it with a drill press with a 1 1/4 bit even if takes a while is not a big deal to me as long as it works. I'll do it like 1/8 of an inch per drill and pull it out so it will not make those long curly chips that causes the problem.

I'm going to be cutting out a couple of skinner knife blades out of 3/16" thick 440C steel and I was hoping to be able to use my table top (9" I think) wood bandsaw for this. The speed isn't adjustable though so I'm not sure if it will work. I was going to try a high tooth count bi-metal blade and cut a little at a time and allow the blade to cool off between cuts so I'm hoping I can pull it off but not sure. I do have a 4 1/2 angle grinder I can use but I'd rather not if I can help it.

Better late than never, however; I just watched your video on Bending Forks. I have a Jig that allows me to make S Hooks in two sizes, and it works fine. However; your jig provides 8 to ten sizes and is very easy to build. I have a Harbor Frieght Bender, but; I really don't use it much. With your creation, I can now use the dyes from the compact bender and expand my ability to create numerous sizes S Hooks. Thank you for sharing your Jig. 😊

I like the idea, may I suggest a iteration? The socket slightly wobbles as it slides down over the 1/2” square stock. When you use larger sockets you can take a second socket and invert it upside down inside the original socket so that you have two sockets nested and two points to engage the 1/2” square, top and bottom. Great idea I’ll be building one too.

I made one of these wire bending jigs today in about 3 hours as I had to mount and adjust the vise on my drill press. I bent some wire left over from some cattle panels that have very strong wire and it worked fine. Since your design uses a 1/2 inch square peg to use half inch drive sockets I thought about making a jig out of 3/8 inch round rod and square rod to use 3/8 drive sockets and perhaps make smaller hooks. Thanks much for the design as I can now use the jig to put hooks on wires with ease and I have about 80 hooks of these to make.

I'm going to try this. But, I'm confounded about something: When you lock the jig in place with the two pins in position, you appear to lock the bolt into the jaws of the vice and not the pins. If that's right, how are the pins being locked in?
@jeffreysanto
@jeffreysanto 9 ай бұрын
The jaws of the vise come into contact with the larger diameter of the pins. The bolt floats in the holes in the pins and could be removed once the pins are secured in the jaws. Because the bolt is a smaller diameter than the pins the only way the bolt would become locked into place would be to over tighten the jaws and compress the drilled holes causing the bolt to bind.

Hey Jeff - what happens when I want to drill a 30mm (1.1811") hole into aluminum soffit/gutter thickness aluminum 0.6858mm (0.027 inch)? Will the forstner bit last me over 200 holes? Will it even work, or is there a bitter method? (some kind of punch or something)
@jeffreysanto
@jeffreysanto 10 ай бұрын
On aluminum that thin I would use a whole punch, a knock out punch or something like it.
