@timminchin, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I was a small girl being very abused when the first movie came out. I had also already read the book by then, mid-90s. I’m now nearly 40, and I have to say the book and original movie meant so much to me, as a neurodivergent girl in an extremely toxic environment. It meant so much to me back then, and I returned to both the book and movie over and over during my childhood. Watching the musical on Netflix now, I’m stuck by how much I’ve grown up. I’m also struck by how much your work on the musical means so much to me now. Thank you.

I saw Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull really early on in the original London production. I was only a little kid - 6 or 7, maybe - but I still remember his performance so vividly! He was so convincing that I refused to believe that it was a man playing the Trunchbull until I saw the picture of him in the programme (which I have kept for over a decade now as one of my prized possessions), and so funny that my dad still goes into hysterics whenever he hears the cast recording.
