Basil Exposition!

Jeff Hunter was great in the 1955 movie White Feather that was a true story.

Love this flick. Wouldn't say it has flaws, more like quirks that give it charm. Supposedly it's a bit different than the book, never read it, want to. It's highly rated.

5:45 I didn't consciously notice that "came the long way round" quote by Dal, but yeah with the season resembling Doctor Who in some ways that does kind of seem like a reference to the end of Heaven Sent (great episode).

He was great in the role, but I am glad they didn't keep him as Captain for the second pilot. He would have passed away in the middle or just after the 3rd season and we'd never have the Star Trek movies as they are today.

I've never seen this either, but I have seen the Stargate episode which I now realize used this idea! Haha

I've never spent time in Dallas / Fort Worth beyond the airport. The water gardens look cool though. I do remember seeing the castle in Pasadena where part of an episode of Season 1 of the TV show "Alias" was filmed. The castle had been converted into apartments, and my dad lived there for a few years. Of course in Alias they pretended it was a place in another country entirely.

I honestly never saw it myself. Hadn't even thought about it in a long time.

Yup. Decker’s son was in the first Star Trek movie that had that bald lady who was a Deltan and they were going after V-ger which was one of the Voyager probes.

Well it was hot in there and who knows how high the radiation was and too late for second thoughts oh what did I do now!

That’s one of the great rules of story telling. Show not tell. Great observation.

You’re right. Kirk was going to soften the blow of Decker’s death by putting in a log entry about Decker giving his life to destroy the machine. And in a way Decker paved the way. They just needed more explosive power. It’s more heroic sounding.

Decker was thinking that perhaps the shuttle craft’s engines when the shuttle was destroyed would deactivate it. He had the right idea but not enough power that the a starship engines set to explode with a timed detonation fortunately had enough megatons. And he said he was prepared for death ever since his crew died.

“I told you I’m in command and I’m giving the orders! We’re going to turn and attack!” “Not with my ship you don’t!”

McCoy scanning isn’t putting a physical and mental in records so you can read them and Spock knew regulations and he just gave in. But hen Kirk ordered him to “blast regulations” and using his being the captain of his own ship Spock relieved Decker who challenged him again not respecting his authority until he realized Spock would have him under arrest. But on his way to Sickbay to get everything on record that’s when Decker beat up his security officer chaperone. Poor Red shirt.

I guess Decker figured since he lost command of his ship why not hijack Spock’s command and Spock just backed down which got McCoy pretty ticked. But McCoy hadn’t done an exam and proved with medical records that Decker was unfit. Kirk found out and he commanded Spock to take over. He wasn’t gonna lose his ship like Decker lost his.

It sorta looked like an elongated TP roll. But when they showed the inside of it with the glowing center that was cool. The radiation in there must be outrageous and hot and Decker was like contorting so it must’ve hurt like heck. And knowing you’re gonna die must not be so pleasant and it looked like he was in a bit of a panic like what did I get myself into now.

Each starship has a different emblem. Same Star Fleet but different ships, so the Constellation would be different and being a Commodore he also has a different uniform emblem. In Court Martial when everyone was in dress uniform for Kirk’s trial, Commodore Stone his dress uniform had different medals than Kirk had. Just like a dress uniform shirt depending on say First Officer or Doctor would be different insignias.

Decker was a Commodore over a Captain but one less than an Admiral. Hold it together better? You got a machine ripping apart a planet, phasers are depleted, engines trashed, attacked by the anti proton beam and the transporter trashed so you can’t beam anyone back up who are calling for help, not something you hold yourself together for. He had survivor’s guilt. I know the episode by heart since I listen to it every night to fall asleep along with Balance of Terror. And Kirk made sure Decker didn’t destroy his ship in his obsession to kill the Doomsday Machine.

The shock of his entire crew on the third planet that was destroyed by the machine and he couldn’t beam them up because his transporter went out. Guess the plan was to inhabit the third planet as the ship was disabled but then the Doomsday Machine ate up the third planet crew and all. The loss was devastating. And who knows how long he had to wait to be found. And it was by accident as the Enterprise was following the trail of destroyed systems. Seeing what happened really did a number on Decker.

“Matt, where’s your crew?” “On the third planet.” “There is no third planet!” “Don’t you think I know that? There was but not any more! They called me they begged me, 400 hundred of them! I couldn’t I, I, couldn’t!” And Decker broke down sobbing. His transporter was knocked out. Survivors guilt really did him in.

A couple of times the Doomday Machine did shoot at the Enterprise and for a while the ship was held in a tractor beam until Kirk was able to fire recharged phasers from the Constellation to distract it. It had some sort of perimeter where if you get into it the Doomsday machine would fire this anti proton beam. Out of that perimeter the machine would ignore you. It knocked out the transporter a couple times and Scotty had to do his magic to get it up and running so that Kirk could press the button and beam out before boom. What got me was that the Constellation did the same thing but their phasers were exhausted and Decker kept making the same mistake with the Enterprise. Kirk didn’t want his ship disabled so he commanded Spock to take command away from Decker who tried to use regulations in order to take command back. But Decker also had survivor’s guilt because his transporter was knocked out and his crew beamed down to the third planet which was destroyed. He said he’d been prepared for death ever since he believed he killed his crew. No one had any idea that the thing would go after the planet his crew was on. The gas planet and the real hot one the machine ignored. So he figured if he had to die to destroy thing so be it. So that’s why he stole the shuttle craft. But with a crew of 400, one shuttle craft, other planets in the system being destroyed, power out, and nowhere to go being dead in space, there wasn’t much to do in terms of escape. His guilt and his obsession to kill the thing really took a toll. But his shuttling into the thing was a start in getting the thing from the inside and since the Constellation was on its last legs and the engines could go anytime, it was a pretty nifty weapon and glad it worked. I guess one could take the moral as be careful of the weapons you build since the creators never thought the Doomsday Machine would turn on them as they built it. Weapons have no loyalty. And this one could think for itself one could say.

When Decker flew into it with the shuttle craft its engines weren’t powerful enough. But a starship’s engines set on overload had just the right amount of megatons of explosive to destroy all the internals of the Doomsday Machine and it was totally deactivated. As Kirk said, Decker had the right idea but not enough power to do it.

The Doomday Machine wasn’t biological. It was built as a weapon but the creators never expected it to turn on them. It’s like building nuclear weapons. What we forget is that others have them too. Built so strong like Kirk mentioned that they could destroy both sides in a war uncounted years ago. Built as a bluff never meant to be used. Guess the Doomsday Machine had other plans. But it was all machine. They had to destroy it so it wouldn’t go to the occupied Rigel Colony.

I was watching something else and they said that Nichols had a singing gig. So she was replaced for that one episode. I thought when I first saw it that Uhura just had a day off and was taking a nap in her quarters.

Yes there was somewhat of a backstory. With star charts they traced the machine from the destroyed solar systems to outside from another galaxy. It’s makers made it too good so they don’t exist any more. A deterrent run wild. But how long it had been wandering around eating planets that was never mentioned. But it won’t eat a gas planet or one with a poisonous atmosphere. How long the Constellation was just hanging there before being found was also a mystery.

What do you mean into the story of it. The whole story was how to destroy the thing since the Doomsday Machine’s outer covering was impervious to weapons.

The only cheesy fighting I noticed was when the security guard was escorting Decker to sickbay and the security guard got beaten up and then Decker went to get the shuttle craft to fly into the Doomsday Machine. I got the episode on line so what was cut out was Kirk yelling and shaking Decker after he was given a shot to perk him up. I knew that part because I had once VCR’d it. But my new TV can’t be hooked up to a VCR anymore and at the time when I recorded many episodes on a Star Trek special, all the episodes were uncut.

I have it on my IPad and listen to it every night to relax and finally fall asleep. The Doomsday Machine is my second favorite episode next to The Changeling.

Star Trek would have been a vastly different show of The Cage had been accepted as the pilot, I don't think that the show would have been as popular or long-lasting as the show was. I also believe that Hunter as Pike would have been less likely to have been as successful as Shatner as Kirk. The Cage set up an exploration of the responsibility of command and the consequences of action that was never really explored until ST: The Wrath of Khan. It would have been a different show, but who knows if it would have been as successful?

Ignoring this key aspect of Pike, the poor too dang fast pacing and the constant need to revisit old stories and screw them up is why SNW was a dumbed down pointless series.

Robert picardo as another missing regeneration?

The Star Trek that could've been had Jeffery Hunter been kept on the show. Though William Shatner and Captain Kirk did make the show legend, I'm glad to see that they are finally filling the history gap between the two captains. It's just a shame that we have to first pass through the junkyard that is discovery before we can watch it.

Jeffery Hunter made a great captain Pike in spite of a bit of a Christ complex.

Bear in mind most of the writers remembered the second world war and were probably veterans.
