With the amount of hours you have in that repair wouldn’t have been cheaper to just buy a new instrument. Just out of curiosity how much would a repair like that cost?
@jimflys2
@jimflys2 2 сағат бұрын
In this case, 2 thjngs. They wanted that horn repaired. It was a borrowed horn. Replacment wojld have been far more. I think this only ran about 250.00 when I did it. A used horn would have even been a bit more than that.

I have a 1963 Broadkaster red sparkle set 14 snare, 12 & 14 toms and 20" bass purchased new by me. Still my one and only set. Never was happy with the snare response so use Ludwigs, either a 5 x14 Supraphonic or a 6.5 x14 BB. What I find surprising is that you had no trouble fitting new heads to the Gretsch's. I had to find heads that were purposely over size to easily slip on, i.e., "vintage" grades.

@ericbrunner4140 and today Remo make Vintage head to fit these slightly oversize shells. Yep Gretsch snares have never been classics. Ludwigs are. Gretsch snares are just raspy. I had a 6 1/2 blue sparkle round badge. I wanted to love it. I could never get it to sound good, so I sold it for $50.00 to a Gretsch freak in Ohio...like 1988. I'm sure he was happy.

First of all, the sound is perfect. Levels are so well balanced. Second, what splashes are those? They sound amazing! Third, playing and execution are top notch. Love all the Jim additions to the song. Love what you're doing in the bridge. Very tasty. This rendition proves that you don't have to play excellent drum songs note for note for the cover to be just as amazing as the original. I can't speak to this video enough, brother. To say I am impressed is an understatement. I came in expecting a good cover, but I got greatness. Bravo, Jim! Best cover of 2024 so far IMO!

O.K. the splashes. 8" Zildjian paper thin from 1983. Then, a 12" like paper thin Agazarian splash from about 15 years ago. 35.00 bucks. It is amazing. The A Zildjian crashes are 17" and 16". The 22" Paiste trad light jazz ride worked well. I go for the sounds that seem to work with the song and have no problem mixing brands and alloys if that particular instrument serves better than a same alloy one that is just a little off.

Mr.jimflys2, boy oh boy, that set of drums is dialed in to perfection. Everything sounds so good, and your wonderful drumming enhances them even more. If you are yearning for more Sting songs there is one that I have always just loved, but I don’t know the name. It has something to do with golden fields of barley, I think. I don’t know if that is part of the title, but it is mentioned in the song.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️

@jimflys2
@jimflys2 18 күн бұрын
Thanks Mr. Greg! Yeah, I have been trying that tom thing lately. Kenny Aaronoff does it as well as Bernard Purdy - for years and decades. I have never heard him explain. So, I'm Not sure why, but here is what I have found out. RLRL works quite well on that. It doesn't work all that great with more complex patterns or doing the big high tom to low tom fills. Depending on the song or genre, the larger tom is the more important one, so relegating the higher tom to the right puts it in a less dominating place. I feel like the 12" drum, which is always a bit choked sounding no matter what kind of mount it is on (RIMS or YESS), seems to work better on the left. More resonant. Still studying that phenomena. I LOVE the fact that my ride can be a little more comfortable when the 10 is on the right. The center of the head is further from the ride when I have the ride set like I really want it. I can easily shift the 10 toward the center of the kick. There is more room to do that and get clearance. So on two of these Sting videos, I have it set 10 right. One Seven Days, you will see it put back to the left. Seemed to work better for the fills I wanted to do. So yeah, thanks for noticing. It is a real deal I am working with. Also inter action with the snare drum is less since the 12 is tuned significantly lower than the 10 which is closer to the pitch of the snare drum. WOW! Of course it would be.

Thanks Earl! I kept my drums mixed a bit on the quiet side, but this is to emulate the volume on the original recording very closely. Think you got the title wrong. It should read "What if some drummers had TOTO's Africa on in the background - but ignored it completely - while they practiced?" You play like other drummers very well. But let's not pretend even for a second that you're playing along to Africa in their style - you occasionally coincide with the song, but it seems more by luck than judgement. Did you even know there was music on while you played? Because it genuinely seems like the drums and the song are absolutely nothing to do with each other. And before anyone says I'm clearly not a drummer so I don't get it - yes I am a drummer, and have been for well over 30 years.
