what app did you use to track the trail on your hike?

I used AllTrails. You can download offline maps with AllTrails+, super convenient!

I just read in the news a poor woman died because of a sudden lighting storm and fell off the slippery path. I wonder if using clips per section would help ensure people did not slide off? It's terrible that happens every year, you are lucky and I am glad no one as hurt that day!

I went to cal from 2007-2011. Ate at all the dining commons. The new ones and the old ones like foothill. The quality of the food definitely looks like it has gone down and they’ve focused more on cheaper foods like salads and noodles etc. Back then we had Vietnamese pho. Chow fun. At foothill there was a food station where a guy stands there and you choose your items and he stir frys the spaghetti or pasta with mushrooms and meat etc. then afterward he lets you choose Alfredo or marinara sauce to put on it. There were burrito stations and unlimited guacamole. Sushi and cheesecake. As the cost of food goes up over time these dining halls I guess have to purchase less expensive items while maintaining a stable price for students.

Amazing story! Someone falls, people are struck by lightning, many are trapped and hailed on, and no one dies. 👏 Thanks for sharing.

the cables are not for the faint of heart. not sure where the "viewer discretion is advised" comes into play. safety comes into play knowing what's going to happen with the weather and avoiding it all together, not advancing cautiously. any chance of rain at all and you are absolutely slipping down without harness & biners. Gravity 1, climbers 0

Hawaiian pizza at Foothill? I'm THERE!!!! Well, too bad I already graduated. Anyway I never lived at Foothill but I lived almost as far from Southside (and non-EECS, non-chem classes) as Foothillers/LaLomers and I wouldn't say it's a hassle to get to other classes or have good food. Northside food court is close and, while not as varied as Southside offerings, has some pretty good Middle Eastern and Asian foods. Also there's a new Boba shop on Euclid/Hearst that opened up last year. IMO, living in Northside, even Foothill is worth it if you crave the quiet and nature, and if you want the nightlife/restaurants it's just ten mins, fifteen tops to Southside. Having said that, Cloyne and CZ have the occasional concert. BTW nice Cal poster to your right (the camera's left). What does it say?

How long did you train for this hike and what did your training consist of? I'm planning to do it in the beginning of May with a couple friends. Great video btw!
@jeffreyyoh5 ай бұрын
Thanks Michael! I've been doing a lot of smaller hikes (5 miles, 10 miles) regularly, and have done longer hikes so this one didn't feel too bad in comparison. I would suggest doing smaller uphill training hikes before attempting this; make sure you're in shape, do regular cardio, and have the right gear! Remember it takes twice the amount of time going back up then it does down, so budget your time appropriately!

I've done it three times but we had good weather each time. It's a challenge but totally worth it. One on my climbs was after they removed the poles, as they do each fall. No harness, and we were the only ones on top for quite some time.
@Russojap27 ай бұрын
I can't believe the park service actually encourages people to climb up this thing...🤷 Tyat set-up is obviously inadequate and dangerous. What they need to do is charge for the permit to traverse it and hire a company to outfit the hikers with harnesses and assist them. They should really build a permanent set of steps there with safety rails.

Love the video. Great job! I am taking a group down and up this trail (staying one night in Phantom). How much water did you carry from Phantom up? Did you cache water on the way down?
@jeffreyyoh7 ай бұрын
I carried around 4 liters to the bottom, and was able to fill up water at the bottom since there is a spigot at Phantom Ranch. However, I did hike in December where it is a lot colder, so I didn't feel very thirsty. During the hotter months, you'll need to carry a lot more as it gets scorching hot. I did not resort to caching water on the trail either!

Doing this in the winter is an awful lot of work. Doing it in the summer is a good way to kill yourself. This is absolutely not recommended by the park and in no way should someone be encouraged to do this. You cannot really enjoy the trip doing this. It's just a challenge, and not a very smart one.
@charlotteyoh18597 ай бұрын
What time did you have to start to be able to finish the hike in one day?
@jeffreyyoh7 ай бұрын
I started at around 6:30 and got up by 7pm! I spent a little more time at Phantom Ranch, so budget enough time and bring a headlamp!
