I like a round thumb hole. I know that my thumb is not round, but my thumb is flexible enough that it seems to adapt to the round hole, and I get a suction that I like. If it's too snug, I use a dab of Chap Stick on sides of joint and works perfect in getting out of ball. I also am a fan of a tapered thumb slug. Almost like a molded thumb. Keep it simple.

One note about the Storm Mix and Roto Grip RG: The Riser Pin is actually the center of the Puck/Top Weight, not the CG. So if you put the CG in the grip center the riser pin will act as a weight offset on the ball. You could then rotate the Pin/Top Weight around to produce static imbalance and thus create different ball dynamics on a small scale. If you want to have a fairly neutral balanced ball like a normal plastic ball with only a CG, then put the riser pin in the grip center instead of the CG and move the CG placement near where the ball track would be.

One of my favorite urethane balls!!! The ones i really liked I simply put the CG 1/2" positive side and 1/2" positive finger at the time. It has such a small bearing on what you can get out of ball motion. At the time, I had also tried the plastic ball layout that Mo Pinel had come up with for the PBA plastic ball championship, however that needs a weight hole and in today's standards can't be done anymore... and to be honest, I didn't like the reaction. Since the Armadillo ribs are marked in inches, I usually just use the the ribs to measure the distance from the PAP to the first oil line, subtract that distance from 13.5 (distance from PAP to NAP), then divide by 2 to get the arc distance across the NAP. ie: 8" distance from PAP to first oil line; 13.5 - 8 = 5.5"; 5.5 x 2 = 11" arc distance across the NAP.
@stormb284 ай бұрын
What if the pap is on the midline? Say 4 3/4 over with no up or down? What does this mean?
@spectrebowling4 ай бұрын
PAP values are just that, there isn't anything to say about them. So in your case, you're simply 4 3/4 x 0. If you give that to any proshop, they should be good to go with any layout you'd request.

Take the one closest to the fingers and thumb. Follow that one all the way around to measure the tilt. If you place the ball track parallel to the counter top it will give you a good visual to if you drew the line correctly.

So please, how does one get out of bowling a full roller. Harder done than said I guess.....
@spectrebowling4 ай бұрын
Most of the time it's because you're turning the hand too early. I try to tell people to point their thumb to the ceiling at the top of the back swing, this will allow them to rotate the ball at release. If your hand is already on the side of the ball at release, the only way you can turn is the "opposite" direction, this is what causes the full-roll. A good at home exercise is to throw an american football underhand with a spiral, do a bit of pitch-and-catch with a friend and this will hopefully help your release.

Yes it will affect the lane, however the lane burn you see on the ball could also be dust or dirt caused by the pinsetter and not the lane itself. Hard to give a correct answer to this in the comment section.

Yes, but every video I watch doesn’t show how to actually place the hole positions. Where do I find those videos?
@spectrebowling4 ай бұрын
The PAP is based off the grip CENTER. So when you're done this layout process, you have the grip center. The Midline is the line that cuts thru the middle of your palm horizontally and the center line is thru the center of the thumb and intersecting the fingers. If your full span is 4 inches, you start from the middle and draw a cut line 2 inches on each side. I hope this makes sense.

Great info Mark!. Question, Is it recommended to resurface a plastic ball? If so what steps should i take on a ball spinner?
@spectrebowling4 ай бұрын
Typically, any work on a polyester ball would come down to cost of work vs. price of a new one. Plastic balls are pretty cheap and very brittle... so throwing a resurface charge (we charge 60$) at a plastic ball, might be overkill. Steps would be. 1. Patch the big holes. 2. File down the gap filler. 3. Start at 120 or 180 grit and get all the surface scratches off. 4. move up grits until the final desired grit. Do 4 sides of the ball, you can do 6 or 8 sides as well but I think it's over-doing it. Thanks for the comment ;)

we are seeing alot of "bizarre" PAP coordinates nowadays. My son, 8 years old, bowls backup, has a PAP of 3 x 3.5 down. You need to go based on what you measure. I believe that there is a better way to measure PAP, but that's a whole other discussion... maybe a video idea there ;)

So this is a 4x4x2 layout with a 5 inch pin since pap is 5x1? Im sorry, im still in the early learning stage of understanding layouts.

No. The pin is at 4 inches from the PAP. The PAP is measured from the grip center. Check that video out as well. You need to find your PAP before doing any layout work.

Great vid! Is there a typical PAP for two-handed bowlers or is there a vast spectrum?
@spectrebowling5 ай бұрын
that's a hard one... Two handers, especially amateurs, will be all over the place in terms of PAP. So it's hard to see a "typical" PAP. What I've done in my shop is drill two old balls, one RH and one LH with two holes in them. This way if a new two hander comes in, I can ask them to throw it (we use an old switch grip finger kit we've had for a while) and we grab their PAP right away. I layed-out those balls with the pin @ 35 degrees from the grip center, so it puts the pin at like 2 o'clock. So far that's been a pretty good tool for us.
@moonshinesonata_5 ай бұрын
If it had a core in it like a Black Widow Viz a Ball or a Radical Spy and you wanted to give it some shape on really toasty conditions, could you drill it with your favorite layout from your resin balls? Or does that not matter on these types of balls?
@spectrebowling5 ай бұрын
if the plastic ball has a core then I would recommend putting an actual layout on it. It will slightly change how it rolls, it'll be hard to see the difference, however the intent is to make the ball go straight, so I would opt for any layout that will make the ball flare less. Larger angles and longer pin to PAP distance. My 2 cents.
@moonshinesonata_5 ай бұрын
@@spectrebowling thank you so much. I actually went with 3 and 3/4 which may be the reason I’m not getting my desired motion as it may be burning up early. If a surface adjustment to 500 with Brunswick Crown Compound doesn’t work. I will redrill for a 5” pin to PAP. Thanks for your 2 cents!!

Great product. The only disadvantage I see is , that like switch grips, if you have to use the tool to install/remove the inner sleeve, the tool wil mess up the tape in the thumbhole. Sinve tape is anecessary t for the right feel, I will stay with the JoPo system because the key doesn't touch the tape. Btw, some of my JoPo's turn without the tool, but some don't.
@michaelfinley99885 ай бұрын
I totally agree with you. I like the JOPO design with the outer thread and tool installation not interfering with the tape. The Ultimate system is great for bowlers with longer thumbs and the only system that have no bottom tabs to break. I had an issue with both Turbo and Vise systems breaking tabs and thumbs feel loose. JOPO thumbs are very robust with thicker tabs and an outer thread securing the thumbs with zero movement. Ultimate system looks like pretty robust as well.

Hey. I have plenty of time to try dual angle/vls/ pal and 2ls layout. At this moment, as a 2handers i assume that PAL and 2LS are meant for that. But, could you give us a more understanding on that third measurement? My point is, when you use dual angle or VLS, the third measurements created have an influence or move the VAL and when you use one PAP to another, it make the layout being closer or farther from the pin. (If you see what i mean) When you use PAL or 2LS, that third measurement place the hole at a certain distance from the pin (that is the point of that method) but when you use a pap compare to another, the distance is still the same but influence the orientation of the hole (the val "hypothetical" is very different that way). Can you just explain how this method is definitely more accurate for 2 handers. (Im a 5 over and 3.5 up PAP! So when i tried most of the 2LS Storm layout suggested, i feel that is a very big 3rd angle... ( Because I learned at first with dual angle) I'm confused but I'm confident in the accuracy of Mo and Mikey creation (pal) and Storm 2LS specifically designed! So i just want to understand more of the science under this 😊.
@spectrebowling5 ай бұрын
Hi Anthony. Thanks for the comment. In traditional layouts, the thumb is always the biggest hole, and usually it is pretty close to the Y axis (mass bias). This is less of the case with two handed players. This is why the 2LS system uses the grip center as a reference point, since bringing the largest hole (in this case only fingers) closer to the mass bias or Y axis of the ball will INCREASE total differential after drilling. It took me a while to wrap my head around it, but think of it this way... closer the holes are to the X axis (Pin), smoother the shape. Closer the holes are the Y axis (equator of the ball), you will get more performance and hook potential. Hope that sums it up good. Maybe we'll think about some FAQ videos to explain some of this. Thanks!
