I don’t understand the hate Eloise is getting. Her feelings are totally valid. She was Penelope’s only real friend and Eloise was always loyal to her. Keeping her identity as Lady Whistledown is fine, but writing a controversial statement about your bestfriend just to keep her from finding your identity out is really low. Not only that, but revealing Marina’s pregnancy to the public just because you’re jealous of her and Colin being together was lower than the lows. To top it all off, the audacity of Penelope to tell Eloise that she’s “all talk but doesn’t do anything” was really shitty of her since Eloise has always been ambitious but being a woman in their society keeps blocking her way and Penelope should’ve known better. She’s no different because she’s hiding behind a different identity just to do what she wanted.

The thing is that Penelope isn’t the originator of the gossip. Penelope isn’t a paparazzi snooping through dirty laundry; she’s observant at social events. She isn’t slipping into chamber pots to catch the latest shit talk; she’s chilling by the punch bowl listening to drunk people gossip. Her only crime is writing it down. And I will point out that Eloise Bridgerton’s mama comes from money, her sister Daphne is a Duchess, her brother is a Viscount, her various sisters all marry exceptionally well, and she herself has no need to marry for money because she’ll be given a lovely allowance and a genteel home by her loving family, whom all care for her regardless of her idiosyncrasies. Penelope is much less fortunate; she’s broke, her dad’s spent their money, and then he dies and their title and fortune is up in the air unless someone catches a pregnancy. Without Whistledown’s money, who’s going to take care of Penelope financially for the rest of her life? Eloise? The Bridgertons? Girl’s gotta look out for herself - and better that Pen proactively outs Eloise’s friendship with “political radicals”, than she get caught keeping chaperone-less company with a poor young dude. That’s the sort of scandal young ladies end up moving to India to get away from…

People who are saying that Eloise didn't understood Penelope or not took her seriously or gave her attention , etc needs to know that they are CHILDHOOD FRIENDS and I don't think Eloise ever forced her to do anything and most importantly PENELOPE never told her anything , about her secrets, about her feelings, about Colin or literally anything and I don't think that happened because Eloise never asked her or something. If you are someone's childhood friend and a very close one about whom you know more than her family itself then I don't think that anyone should wait for their friends to ask them about their feelings , if PEN felt these things then why she never said anything to Eloise or told her about what her likes are , dislikes are , and Eloise literally shared every damn secret of her's to PEN then why she never shared anything about herself to Eloise? Infact even at the end of season 2 Eloise was the one who found out that PEN is LW , PEN never shared even after everything they have been through, their families have been through, maybe it was hard but I think if PEN have told Eloise her truth by herself then Eloise would have understood or the situation wouldn't be like this. I have recently watched all of the seasons again and I observed that PEN is not so different than the rest of the ton actually. Many think that Cressida is cruel but so is pen in a way or worse because Cressida never hide herself and PEN never uncovered herself. I am not a PEN hater or polin hater but it is true that PEN is a little toxic. And just by saying that she is a wallflower or a spinster or whatever the other terms the ton used for her is not a way to justify her actions as LW. She is doing the same to others, gossiping about them badly in front of the whole ton. And as the queen said herself that gossiping or talking to someone is temporary but using pen and writing the stories on the paper gives that gossip permanence which is more cruel. As Colin said that if LW haven't wrote about marina in the way she did then perhaps things could have also been handled differently , in a less cruel way. What would have happened if PEN told Colin about Marina's situation in a more discreet or private way rather than telling the whole ton about it? I think Colin and marina and all would have handled it in a better way. As for Eloise nobody was talking about her and Theo and even though it would've been risky or not appropriate for a lady but it would have been good for her to be with theo, as she said herself that it was the only thing in her life that was good at that time and Theo was a like minded person and it breaks my heart to not see him in season 3. Wouldn't it have been a great story if Eloise were with Theo , I mean she is a person who is open minded, activist sorta who wants to be free of the Society , and Theo was the person who was from outside the society , a normal worker, educated and open minded. what a beautiful match it would have been. Anyway if I were Eloise I would also have been mad at PEN but as I know PEN from childhood and my best friend , I would have tried to understand her but it would only after a long time has passed that I would have forgave her.

Oh please like Penelope could even get a word in during Eloise’s constant ranting and raving about her life struggles but never even showed interest in Penelope’s knowing she was going through a lot due to the LW letter about her family scandal. Throughout the scenes between them it’s clear Eloise never listens to Penelope. She even admits it in season two. Also when Cressida and everyone else was bullying or laughing at Penelope or her family and Eloise never defended her. Eloise is definitely being a mean girl in season 3 by befriending Cressida. I understand she is angry and has a right to be but at the same time let’s not act like Eloise was a good friend. Both were terrible friends to each other. Penelope lied and hurt Eloise and Eloise ignored and hurt Penelope.

Penelope doesn’t have to tell her friend anything especially since Eloise never even listened. If I had a friend who never listened to me and all she did was talk about herself and her struggles I wouldn’t tell her anything either cause I would think my friend doesn’t care about me. That’s probably how Penelope felt, she couldn’t trust her own friend with her secrets cause her friend didn’t show enough interest in her to indicate she even cared.

So I don’t think she betrayed El, El had a choice to not go see that boy pen kept warning her, but she didn’t want to listen so the queen found out and threaten El and then El she told Penn and Pen who is lady whistledown had a choice which was to stay hidden and not protect her friend and her family or yes Expose her friend but it would protect El and El’s family. El refuse to see that then said hurtful shit and then befriended the person who bullied people not just people was rude to El’s older sister and then rude to Pen and others! Some people forget El was obsessed with the reading the gossiping each day! She had a collection! Honestly if Pen was my best friend and I found out how I did, yes I would be upset but I would not unfriend her or say hurtful shit towards her. I’ll ask for space and then come back to talk to her about everything!

I they were both bad friends in different ways. Obviously Pen being whistledown is self explanatory. She’s caused a lot of torment for people, including friends and family. Eloise as much as I love her head strong ness she really just bulldozed past Pen’s feelings sometimes and didn’t listen, because they didn’t align with her more feminist views. She did that to Daphne as well constantly judging her for wanting to be a mom/ wife and fitting societies rules. Both are rebels in different ways and I hope they find their way back to eachother. I miss them lol 😢

Not to mention her family is the considered the laughingstock of the town due to them being poorer and lower in title. So how would she stand up for herself. I can definitely understand why Penelope did what she did. After being ignored or bullied by everyone and under appreciated by her own best friend she clearly needed her voice and she used it was it the best way to go about it? No course not. But is it understandable? Absolutely.
