Bowser's disguise works in the following way: In game's code there's table, which is 8 elements long. Each entry contains enemy type, to which Bowser changes whenever he's defeated with Fire Flower powerup. After the final hit is dealt, Bowser gets transformed into defined enemy type, then the death routine for swapped enemy is executed. When defeating Bowser in this way in worlds higher than 8, you may get invalid enemy type. This is because the game starts indexing the mentioned table out of bounds. The death routine may not exist, or point to unrelated code. In former case, usually nothing happens and entity spawns normally. In latter case, the game will crash, sometimes with spectacular fashion, as seen in World 124-1 of VS. Super Mario Bros. (5:17 mark of video)
