I own them both, Joe, and your review is right on the money. I’m surprised how well the ‘70’s typewriter performs. Of the two it’s my favourite, although everyone loves the look of the earlier version.

Does anyone understand how to set the margins???
@Joe_VanCleave15 сағат бұрын
To set the left margin, hold down 2nd shift and use SPACE BAR or BS key to move the carrier right or left to where you want the left margin, then press the LM/RM key to set it. To set the right margin, do the same but hold down the CODE key instead. If the new margin is wider than the old, the carrier will stop at the previous margin position and beep. Just hit MR (margin release) and continue as described above.

I just scored a 50ihs clipper, and a galaxie 12 in the same day, and I was just complaining about how I had L.C. Smith, and I had Corona writers, but no Smith Corona. Big score. Your video has me just as stoked on the XII. We're watching tracking right now (also found a replacement set of keys for an olivetti lettera 22 that was missing a few, but was otherwise flawless)

Thank you for your wonderful typewriter videos! Please consider making a video about cleaning/lubricating daisywheel-based electric typewriters. I purchased an IBM Actionwriter I and I love how it types, but the corrective ribbon does not disengage correctly (have to use spacebar or backspace before the raised guides will fall back into neutral position). I am new to typewriters and am having trouble finding guidance on how to diagnose and correct an issue like this.

Dang it Joe, you mean to tell me I have to go and organize the damn thing myself?! I was hoping some unknown other typewriter enthusiast would do the work for me locally, ah. Thank you for this video, especially the more technical stuff. So many considerations to mind!

Hey Joe, where did you find those grommets for the lid stems? I have this typewriter and would like to replace those grommets. Enjoy your channel. Thank you. Btw: why would my royal's capital letters strike the with top half of the letter missing?
@Joe_VanCleaveКүн бұрын
I got my grommets from an assortment pack at my local hardware store. The groove around the outside should fit snuggly in the hole in the body, which the middle hole of the grommets should be snug for the posts under the ribbon cover. Regarding the capital letters, first make sure it’s not a ribbon lift issue, set the ribbon color to the red position and see if it helps. If so, the ribbon lift isn’t going high enough for the black position. Otherwise it could need the upper and lower case positions adjusted, which necessitates adjusting the upper case position so the letters print evenly, then adjusting the lower case so the bottoms of the letters are even between upper and lower case.

I have 2 brother typewriters, one is probably this model, the other is an even older, more basic model. I love using them and wish I could find different typefaces. I was able to get "Prestige" at a local office supplies store but they didn't have any other typeface available.

Bought my first typewriter yesterday, there is a certain romantic element but for me i want to force myself to learn to spell again. As an engineer i appreciate the design and mechanical aspects of its operation. For me the biggest driving factor is with the advent of AI none of your work or thoughts are your own, everything is visible and algorithms can be used to control wrong think. I guess the more we are pushed ever rapidly down the road of so called progress i feel the inate need to pull away from increasing control over humans. Putting your thoughts on paper is therapeutic.

The cost for the precision manufacturing needed would be enormous and you wouldn't be able to manufacture and sell a large volume of manual typewriters of good quality at any kind of reasonable price. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see someone find all of the tooling and plans to manufacture SCM 5 series manuals!! That would be amazing. But then what is the price for a limited production, high quality manual typewriter from such a company? I doubt it is sustainable unless people are willing to part with quite a bit of money for one.
@Joe_VanCleave3 күн бұрын
I agree. The analogy I can think of are Leica M-series film rangefinder cameras, which are still in manufacture but cost many thousands. Toys for the well-heeled; but is there enough of a luxury market for expensive typewriters? I doubt it.

This is great. There are no type-ins in the country I live in so I was thinking of setting one up, but a lot of work for one person. What I will do is put feelers out on Facebook to see who is even using them. A friend went to a writing group and I went national book day where they were reading their works. None of them used typewriters and looked at me funny 😄

If I get in the car 🚗🚨 right now! Lol and speed like a mad man, seriously give it the beans, and just drive all night too, I may just make it, then again, I may have better luck, being the first to lank a Buick on the moon. Man that would be an amazing type-in what an incredible way to honor him, that truly awesome ❤ I'm so thankful for this episode, you laid it all out beautifully Joe, that is just made sense and very easy to follow. And listening following along taking notes because I'd like to start a Type In our here on the East Coast, I'm listening and saying to myself, 'Of course,' or, 'That's brilliant,' and some like 'Perfect,' and 'Great Idea.' I wish I could attend one of these, and hopefully soon start one, there a pretty cool and big community center out here, has multiple different sized rooms available and they are desperate to find venues to cram in, I happen to know the Mayor of my town, I live in a Mayberry kind of town, and I remember him saying events that are not for profit and/or bring the community together are on the free of use list....might be election was coming lol. At any rate it is possible there is a place. Several great ideas, and be a great way to tell my Wife why I need so many Typewriters....notice I said tell....not ask LOL. Just some humor there. Thank you Joe for this one, really needed it. ❤

I think you have inspired me to find a type-in in my area. Maybe I can take the 5ax Sterling with me. It would be interesting to meet other people and see what kind of machines and experiences they have. Interestingly, there are still at least 2 typewriter repair shops here in the research triangle area so I’m sure there are a few typewriter enthusiasts.

I really enjoyed this video and found it informative! There is a great scarcity on sources for a how-to on a type-in, and this was very insightful and thorough. Funnily enough, I just sent a letter the other day which had questions regarding this topic. Hopefully I can manage to start a local typewriter guild; from there, I’ll definitely have to begin the first type-in of my area! May the Revolution be typewritten!

I was thinking of writing you and asking how to start a type-in. There’s not very many (if any at all) videos on how to start a type-in. My wife and I tried to go to a type-in put on by a typewriter collector club in the Atlanta area. They hold their type-ins at a train museum. We turned around and left when we were told there was a $10 per person cover charge. I thought “why don’t they use a library?”. Thanks for the good information.

I was surprised to see that Austin, TX, hipster cental, doesn't have enough people into typewritters to have type-ins. There are a couple of enthusiasts, but it seems mostly dead. I would love to get involved, but I don't want to invest alot of time/effort only to talk to myself.

I have followed this process, approximately, for maybe a dozen exposures and have only gotten one very mediocre success. The difference is that I was only able to get 12% hydrogen peroxide, and that I'm using a brownie box camera with an f/16 apperature. Same paper, same assumed "ISO" for the paper, same fogging procedure, same or greater bath times. Maybe it's that I am using a homemade caffeinol-c developer and not getting a dark enough development before beginning the bleaching. I imagine that it would be nearly impossible to give me accurate guidance on what I'm doing wrong but, in case there is some glaring problem with my modifications, I would love any helpful hints that you might have.
@Joe_VanCleave4 күн бұрын
With proper exposure and development the negative should appear very dark, prior to bleaching white. I recommend you try non-caffeine-based developers that are more chemically active.

It says: This alternative reversal process was developed by Ricardo Leite in conjunction with Dr. Scott Williams (of caffenol fame), see this PDF: www.filmlabs.org/docs/citric-h... A quick rundown of the process: 1) Expose print paper in-camera (grade 2 RC I rate at 3 stops more than ISO 3) 2) Fully develop in fresh chemistry to completion (~2 minutes) 3) 30s water rinse 4) 30s in citric acid solution (~3 tsp to 500mL water) face down 5) 1:00 in H2O2 (I'm using 35% H2O2, but 12% also works) face down (NOTE: drugstore H2O2 is too weak, you need at least ~12%, can be found at health food stores or beauty supply stores for hair bleaching) 6) Repeat steps 4 & 5 7) 30s water rinse 8) Flashing exposure ~5 seconds under bright white light 9) 2nd development to completion - can be done under white lights 10) Final rinse; no need to fix, should not have any residual silver halide left in emulsion

Thanks for such a clear presentation, my sister got the exact same looking model (Remington Monarch) in a charity shop in Marseille, 5€ ! The original spools were still in - and we removed the old black ribbon to replace it with a two-color, Temu-ordered ribbon. And now it works like a charm - perfect for the labelling of her vinegars, pickles and other jars ! Scouting the internet for reliable information is always a trip into the unknown, I was relieved to see you had reviewed this machine. As we were experimenting my own mother peered over our shoulders and reminisced about having to learn to type « blindly » on JAPY with a sheet covering the fingers, at school, but then using these skills to proof and style manuscripts in the early 80s computer days. Her fingers started to run over the keyboard. Not such a bad memory after all !

Amen, I use ever machine, I try to save some, but my collection won't go more than 12, I have currently 7, maybe 8 is it will ever ship. But I don't want so many I can't use them, but I absolutely use all of my machines. I write between 6 and 10 pages a day, and some days I want that snappy crisp SCM Galaxie Deluxe other days the buttery smooth Hermes 3000, some days I'm unable to leave my bed, so the EP-43, other times I'm out of the house and I'll take with me in a go writer bag my EP-20, when I'm doing a 1 or 2 paged outline I get my '68 Royal Aristocrat Special out, perfect for that. Some days, Momma said there'd be days like this and when my hands are not up to pushing keys, out comes the Big Gun, my '72 Electra 110. And there's a few more machines I'd like to have, I may even trade some out over the years. But 12 is a perfect amount for me that to me is within reason of use, too many more than that it would become hard I think to be able to use them and maintain them all. As it is each of my machines undergo a light cleaning before and after each use, a once a month medium cleaning and then a major 6 month service. I can't t imagine doing that more that 12 times over. And like you said Joe too many and it becomes what's the point especially if you can't use them all. If I were to down size. I'd probably just keep The Hermes 3000 Galaxie Deluxe SCM 110 EP-43 And Royal Aristocrat Special because my Wife bought it for me and I want to continue to live, lol! I said to her once I could get rid of the Royal to save room or open up for other acquisitions. The Look I got lol was just lol Thought I was going to need a Young Priest and an Old Priest lol! As much as I wish I could save them all, I just can't, no one can, but I can certainly help to maintain a select lucky few. That live in a good loving home where there are exercised. ❤
