If you or your customer wants the cane stained and a clear finish applied, you may want to hold off on the glue as the stain may not penetrate it. I have done many chairs over the years and rarely used glue, and those chairs are still holding up.
@mjamsdenfurnitureАй бұрын
Yes when staining it is best to stain before gluing if glue is to be used.

Oh, your “wasn’t take easy” comment has me laughing out loud! These videos are amazing. I’m working on a chair that I fully took down to the wood frame, and your very detailed steps are sooooo helpful! I almost have the inside pieces done and just finished watching the rest of the series to line out all of my remaining steps. I now feel confident after watching these (multiple times) that I know what to do. Thank you so much for taking the time to film and post these. And wow is upholstery a lot more involved than I would have guessed!!! I have an all new respect!!!

I have been trying to find information or guidance on coil spring placement... like how far apart? how far from the edge? should the springs be about an inch higher than the finished seat? can you use staples instead of tacks to secure the spring ties? also there is sometimes a cross support (wood piece) at the back and the front of the chair in all 4 corners (like in your video) to space out my springs evenly is it ok to put them slightly under this wood piece or will that cause problems or make noise? hope that makes sense
@mjamsdenfurniture10 ай бұрын
Two to three inches between springs should be good. an inch above the frame rail when tied is good. Yes you can use staples, but nails are better, If you choose staples use at least half inch ones. Most springs are hour glass shaped, installing them under the corner blocks could cause the top of the spring to rub on the block. Once you are finished with the springs sit on the chair to test the result. Make sure the spring twine is not stopping the springs, if it is you need taller springs. If the seating is to soft you need to add springs. I wouldn't worry if it feels to firm, your cushion will help there.

this guy is upset over a $25 tool... not only that but it can easily be fixed by using adhesive to put it back on... OBVIOUSLY the pad can be replaced THERE IS A SCREW RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE HOLDING IT ON.... you would think a man thats worked in a shop and that is standing beside a giant rack of screws, nuts, and bolts, that you would know a thing or 2 about taking tools apart and fixing them.... but even if you didnt know how to do this Grade 9 level fix.. ITS ONLY $25...............

A pine 2x4 is not as strong as a good piece of hardwood, but it sure is stronger than broken plywood. If you have the room for it I would say go ahead and give it a try.

I have this big ass couch one year old that broke similar to this one except mine broke in the edge roll where they connected the springs to. Then I only have two of those butt catcher sinking bar thingys lol I would have at least thought there would be four of those with how wide and long this couch is. But anywho flipped it thinking I would have an easy fix no this couch is made of nothing but plywood and not only is the roll bar broke in half the two butt catching thingys are broke as well. I paid way to much money to throw this away in only one year of usage. I don't know where to begin for someone who doesn't have tools.

Hi , loving your video of upholstering a winged chair. ….unfortunately I can’t see how the back of the chair was quilted with the horse hair then the muslin cloth….can you direct me to the back of the chair. Many thanks lizK
@mjamsdenfurniture2 жыл бұрын
Hello Liz: In the interest of time I cut out a lot of repetitive steps. The inside back is done the same way as the seat, minus the springs of course. The outside back does not get any horsehair or muslin, just a covering of burlap a layer of cotton and the final fabric.

@mjamsdenfurniture2 жыл бұрын
I took a quick look at a couple and it looks like it might not come off. It looks to me like the sharping unit is mounted to the front of the sharpener in some way. Maybe a trim ring where the pencil goes in comes off revealing a nut that holds the unit in place? sorry I can't help much.

I think it's pretty important to note that new covers usually have all sorts of creases in them and it helps to work in a warm space and keep the cover warm with a hair dryer while working.
@mjamsdenfurniture2 жыл бұрын
Yes Joshua, very true. If some one should try that be vary careful not to apply to much heat with the hair dryer. The safest bet in my opinion is to let the creases work themselves out in the sun. But having a warm space to work in and letting the vinyl warm up to room temperature is very helpful.
@JoshuaJonah2 жыл бұрын
@@mjamsdenfurniture I only say that from experience today. I've done in my warm shop dozens of times. Bit today I was In my trailer workshop that was about 5 degrees and the hair dryer made a huge difference.

I cannot believe how lucky I am to have found this video! I have an IKEA sofa that is broken in a way that is functionally identical to the one in this video. (Taking this sucker apart is going to be a bit more complicated.) For what I paid when I bought it used in 2008, the sofa has given me plenty of life. Still, I'd rather not add it to the dump/garbage when it can be repaired. So, video in hand, a zig zag tool on the way, and a list of power tools to buy (I just bought a house and I have six dining room chairs to repair, so I'm going to need them eventually), here we go. Wish me luck!
