There are many ways to drill these holes. The method shown here seems to work ok but I prefer to drill to depth using the index pin instead of just marking the hole location then drilling without the index. I think my way is more accurate. I would also run the brad point drill much faster than shown here as it is more accurate and produces no tear out of fibres. I also think that drilling on a mill using a digital readout, X-Y coordinates etc., is a bit of overkill and not needed, but each to his own method. Thanks for providing the video. Cheers...

Thanks for watching. Yep, lots of different methods. Keeping the index pin in place also works great too. Just was easier to film this way. If I used a mill and digital read out there would be little point posting a video about it…as these videos are supposed to help people and few people will have that equipment… it’s also not needed for drilling 6 holes which can be drilled perfectly accurately like this.

What’s it like bending strings on such frets? How different is it bending across a fret that moves “forward “ vs “backward” from the note’s original spot on that fret?

I don't understand why you just don't drill though the body with the 1/8" bit from the top. Then remove the bridge and drill your 5/16" string ferrule hole. Any slight burring on the back from the 1/8" bit will be hidden by the larger bottom hole. This would save scratching up the front trying to get the index bit into the six different holes. I suppose you could tape up the front to reduce the chance of marring. I suppose the other way to be even more careful with the front, is to place the pin in the guitar (assuming shallow holes) and move that pin into the MDF hole so you are marring up the MDF and not the face of the guitar.
@mantoncustoms
@mantoncustoms Ай бұрын
The point of the indexing pin is to make sure the holes are straight and in line. If you drill the 1/8” bit all the way through the body, the holes will be crooked on the back. The bit will wander as it passes through the body and you will not have straight holes. Yes, there are ways to protect the top if you’re worried, about that part.

Beautiful ❤️ bass and great choice of materials used. It is refreshing to see more and more people flocking to 32-in scale basses. I bought my first brand new base in 1981, an Aria Pro II TSB-400 which has a 32-inch scale and I've been playing it ever since. I noticed lately a lot of KZfaqrs praising the 32 inch neck scale. There are only now figuring out something that I've known for over 40 years and that is how perfect a 32 inch scale bass is for both playability and sound quality. I'm going to be reaching out to see what you charge for a custom 32 inch bass. Keep up the great work! 🤗

Thank you very much! 32” is definitely my favourite scale length too. I’m not convinced any great thought went into settling on 34” in the first place. But going against anything traditional (like a 34” scale length) is always hard going in the guitar/bass world and people take ages to accept anything different! Glad they finally seem to be doing so. Would be happy to chat about a build and thanks for watching 😃.

How long did you wait for the laquer to dry before applying the decal? The next day? Im currently planning on 10 days which is what stewmac recommends for the absolute minimum time before polishing the colortone laquer. And I assume I have to have a decent polish under the decal when I apply it or is the orange peel invisible due to the adhesive?
@mantoncustoms
@mantoncustoms 4 ай бұрын
Overnight is plenty of time before applying the decal. 10 days or more is for the final polishing the lacquer, not level sanding. You don’t need to polish under the decal, just spray a nice wet coat (with no orange peel) and don’t sand it before the decal goes on.

I 'auditioned' several guitars with P90s to find the one whose tone I liked best. From a crappy Harley Benton Les Paul Jr clone, to the Epiphone LP Jr version of same, two Gretches, a Gibson Les Paul Jr, a Les Paul with 2 P90s, and a Godin. The best P90 I played, by far, was a Fender Noventa Telecaster with one P90. Mexican build. Whatever it was about the Fender P90s, they were SO much better. I bought the Strat version with 2 P90s. I had the Jazzmaster with 3 P90s, but returned it the next day, it was too heavy & 3 P90s is just cosmetic. The Bare Knuckle 'Pig P90s seem to be the top of the lists, with Fralin & Seymour Duncan's "antiquity" series mentioned often as well.

Hi Manton Customs, I appreciate your video very much. Presently I also try to put a decal on a type of "roasted headstock" (dark wood). I put 3 coats of wipe-on poly (excellent laquer) on the headstock, then placed the decal on it and put another 3 coats of wipe-on poly over it. Like in your video (starting at 5'50min) I then tried carefully to wetsand over the decal, to bring the outlines down and to remove the "opague" white shadow under the decal. I tried that with a 1500 grid wetsand-paper. At the very beginning it worked outstanding, but what a pitty, suddenly I sanded into the decal somehow and the letters in the decal were ruined. I can't understand, how this was possible, because I was very careful and the 3 coats of laquer couldn't be sanded through this fast, because I didn't use pressure while sanding. Could you tell me , what I did wrong ? Would appreciate your advice very much. Cheers Roger
@mantoncustoms
@mantoncustoms 4 ай бұрын
Hi Roger, Thanks for watching and glad the video was helpful. Sorry to hear about the decal sand through. There’s a few possibilities for what caused it - 1, the poly wasn’t dry enough to withstand sanding and it was sanded too soon. 2, the decal wasn’t stuck down flat and had ridges in it which were higher than your top coat. 3, there wasn’t enough poly on top of the decal…I don’t have a lot of experience with wipe on Poly, but the ones I have used, have been really slow to build and each coat is quite thin. I’d recommend spraying the headstock even if you’re using wipe on poly for the rest of the neck.
