Yes I had the same experience that "ambition" was driving me to do things that went against core values of honesty and building good relationships with other people. I let go of ambition. For me now it's a very negative word. It means you are trying to "get: or "take" from the outside world rather than give to it ....

When I get tense or stressed, I watch one of your videos, and it relaxes me. There is something about your voice that is almost magical. I could listen to it all day. Also, I find your guests interesting, so that just makes it even better. Keep up the good work. Thx.

Yes, in grammar school. I was this pathetic kid and I did things I didn’t know were funny. For some reason I didn’t mind being laughed at. I liked it, and leaned into it. I was funny and people liked me. Kids from other classrooms would say hi to me on the recess playground. I didn’t know who they were, but I liked it. I liked me. Then I made a friend, a real friend. One day he shoved me not in a friendly way and told me to knock it off, I didn’t have to entertain him. After that I was funny in a different way, hard to explain. I discovered that the best and funniest comedy is when you say something that is right next to truth but with a twist, a whisker away from offending . So on edge and dangerous it is funny. Comedy allows you to say stuff that everyone wants to say but are too scared (like a bloody nose). I absolutely loved my friend and my sixth grade life. Then that summer before seventh, Skip’s Dad got transferred to Iran with Shell Oil Company and was gone. In September I entered middle school. I had turned back into the pathetic kid again. My parents didn’t know anything had changed, because I was always pathetic at home. So yes, I was a stand up comic once. I know exactly what it feels like: a double edged sword. But oh, what a place to be!!

The last sequence is not usually just one scene. It's not even shorter than other sequences most of the time. There may be examples of that being the case, but most films are simply not that way.

This poor guy. Seems like he didn't take the risks and trust his gut through that process and now, not only has a film that wasn't received well, but regrets shooting it how he wanted. I guess that's a lesson to take, you don't know how it will be received, but at least you can be proud of what you make. Also love that storytelling can't 'make or break you' if you are speaking to the work. But to Byron, if it means anything, coming from some random on the internet. You didn't fail. You made a film. One of the hardest artforms to bring into existence. You should be proud.

The 8 Sequence Method makes that which sometimes seems impossible much more approachable. And I love how it forces the writer to think about pacing.

I bought the Nutshell Technique book after learning of it on your main channel. It is a bit sparse, but it helped me understand my own story better, turning a script I didn't know how to end into what I consider my best script to date.

Yes, because in a few years, I will have been in the industry for 30 years. Even though I've had periods where things were decent or even great, I was able to support myself, which I see as a tremendous achievement. I managed to save for times without income, which always returned. However, I must face the reality that I will be poor by the time I retire due to only being able to pay low amounts into social security. So, I must consider leaving this industry entirely to work in something more stable for at least another decade, if not longer. I always encourage young people to follow their dreams and stay the course, but everything eventually has a limit.

I am starting to enter the film realm as a teenager and felt that the 2 short films I did this year would determine if I would venture into the film industry. As it turns out I feel I am committed to the film industry as a short film of mine, OBSERVATIONS, was accepted into the MKE International Short Film Festival.

Contests are so unpredictable. If you have money to spend and want to get a "general" idea of how you stand up, then go for it. I don't like buying feedback from a contest. I'd rather hire a screenwriting consultant who you can speak to and interact with. Winning a contest is more about making connections and pitching your script. It doesn't mean that your screenplay is going to be made. It’s possible but most likely not.

Was waiting for but didn't hear "In real time." If it's not in real time, you can cut wherever and however you want. I just watched the trailer (looks dope!), and the room appears so big that even if the movie is in real time you can still cut all over the place and now I'm baffled. I want to understand! (this is how you get me to watch your movie, clever indeed!)

2024 now and pretty much nothing in this video is reality. Studios/Streamers have switched to "implosion mode" where they are only proceeding with DEI projects from no talent hacks that have the right pronouns and politics. The writers strike and covid have pretty much killed off the industry. Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who are all dead, DEI'd to death, and the contests now will ONLY select DEI purple hair winners. One of the major screenplay/film festivals have chosen DEI winners for the great majority of their winners for four years in a row. The film world Corey is talking about with story engines no longer exists. If you have the right pronouns, and skin color and sexual orientation and have a script that follows "the message" you might be able to proceed. If you are a normal person with a great screenplay. Forget it.

Jill is absolutely correct...you can combine different screenwriting books. You should actually! To me, Jill's technique focuses on more of the emotional arc of the story. Whereas, Save the Cat's Beat Sheet is like a structure for your emotional story. Jill provides an emotional map. I use Save the Cat, Nutshell Technique and Alan Watt's tips as well.

The falling into a deep chasm death also was how they killed Sirius black in Harry Potter in a way. In the film he just falls back into this foggy void and we’re like “wtf?!”. I never liked how they killed him like that. And on the swappings (gender, race, etc), I’ve never liked that because it’s trying to fix something that was never broken and it’s implying that the opposites of whatever is being swapped (if it’s mostly a male cast switching to all females, mostly white switching to all black, etc), it’s implying that those people could never have watched, enjoyed or related to those characters/story UNLESS they saw someone “who looks like them.” That’s INCREDIBLY sexist/racist/discriminatory because it’s saying flat out “you’re too stupid to enjoy, relate or understand what’s being shown to you. So we have to ‘dumb it down’ so you’ll get it.” That’s WAY worse than any “white washing” or whatever has ever been done I would think. Could you imagine going up to a black woman and saying “sorry, but you’re too stupid to watch Steel Magnolias as is, so we have to put Queen Latifah in it so you’ll understand what’s happening.” 😱 You’d get your face bashed in (or worse) because that’s terrible and racist as all get out. Yea, sure, we need movies to represent SOME things, but when a movie is ONLY made for that, there is ZERO question or doubt - that movie is trash with a capital garbage. They focus on the propaganda and little to no focus at all on the story - which is the ENTIRE point of the film. But they do this to ride the waves of civil unrest. It’s like war profiteering. They make the most money (they think) on movies that are geared for the targeted groups. It’s truly sad that movies and so many other great entertaining mediums are being suffocated with money hungry, non creative mentalities. With everything “getting a comeback” - from clothes to film to games - we’re back in the 90/80/70/60s but the passion and creativity from those eras isn’t alive anymore. We’re just sticks in the mud, sinking from stagnation. Such a shame 😞
