Why does it feel like I watched a psychological horror from 1992?

As crazy as SpongeBob is, I was not expecting Hillenburg’s early work to be so trippy.

Despite how wild this is, it kinda portrays the monotony of life pretty well, even though that's probably not what it was going for at all.

Hey, I’d give the man some credit. He made the protagonist of his cartoon a fry cook for a reason.

Great stuff, Hillenburg was part of the experimental animation program in CalArts at the time. Another alumni from that program includes Henry Selick, the director of Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The inspirations from Fantastic Planet (a major inspiration for Pikmin btw!) are pretty neat to see here, would definitely recommend anyone find a way to see it if they can.

Who recognized the squid wars lookalike?? This is crazy to see the beginning of what SpongeBob is and what started such a beautiful masterpiece.

The guy looking out the window gives me Kaz vibes. That’s probably why Hillenburg picked him to be a storyboard artist in several episodes

Anyone can be an artists, especially Stephen Hillenburg who was a marine biologist before creating SpongeBob. This film is basically Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.

I'm convinced Stephen Hillenburg had knowledge of some Eldrich truth and managed to escape with his sanity, and that this was his way of conveying that Eldrich truth

It’s fascinating looking at other outlets that delve into Steve’s thoughts/ideals rather than the subtle ones we only have on Spongebob.

Love it. This is the beauty of animation. The ability to let your imagination run wild and play with reality. It may be impossible to interpret but there is creative genius in this. Steve obviously upped his storytelling game with SpingeBob but there is a certain reckless abandon in all of his work which is what makes it special.
