Agree with everything you said at the end in regards to Styx & DDY. Saw the new version of Styx for the 11th time this past June in Houston. John Waite was great as was Foreigner. As for Foreigner as you said, its the songs. I'd bet that not a single member of current Foreigner was even alive when Foreigner released their first album. But this version of Foreigner with Kelly Hansen as Lou Graham delivered every song flawlessly. As good as John Waite and Foreigner were Styx totally stole the show as I knew they would. Sucherman is world class on the drums, JY was JY which is always great. I still want to be Tommy Shaw when I grow up & I'm 60. For the 11th time once again it was Gowan that totally stole the show. I've been to over 100 rock shows in my life including Styx with DDY 13 times. With that said Lawrence Gowan is the greatest showman I've ever seen. He commands the stage. Back to Dennis, I was there in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl on that hot hot day in 83 or 84 for that fateful Kilroy show that JY, Tommy & Cahil lied about on Behind The Music. Yes thousands left after the Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Rik Emmett encore. They did the year before too after Santana left the stage & before Journey took the stage. Not in the numbers that left BEFORE Styx took the stage but thousands did leave after Santana finished their set. I was at both shows and the weather was similar but after Hagar's set was finished and before Styx took the stage the higher ups running the Cotton Bowl venue shut down all beer sales because the crowd was so rowdy & intense. The actual Styx concert was never booed. The people left, left for a variety of reasons. But they left before Styx ever took the stage just like the prior year when thousands left before Journey ever took the stage. The 30,000 to 40,000 that stayed saw a flawless Styx show. 3 or 4 people in our group left to go out to our truck that had the beer in it. The dumbasses couldnt find the truck then were not allowed to re enter. Tommy & JY did Dennis wrong. That's my only take on the matter.

Well Said. I will stand up for JY and Styx until Time Ceases to Exist. DDY did this to HIMSELF. I kept up on the court case between DDY and JY and besides Observer being a Dick, so is DDY. The original Styx is Never going to happen. And I think it is FRICKIN AWESOME that there are Brothers in Styx once again. Who gives a 💩 where they came from. As far as JY being Too Old 😮 JY said in an interview not long ago that they will have to SCRAPE HIM OFF THE STAGE! That man is in REALLY good health at 74 . I've been a Styx fan since 72 and I stand by My Guys!!! TY for standing up for them too.

Agree with you. If Dennis hadn't tried to sue the band, maybe they would've allowed him to tour again later on. As you said, DDY did this to himself. His fans also ignores that DeYoung seems no longer perform in front of live audiences anymore. So how are they expecting Dennis to tour with Styx again? Personally I'm fine with the way things are in the band...

This induction may have given Todd another festher in his cap. His not attending showed he didn't really need it. He made a success of himself in his own unique, Todd way and whether he wins awards or was inductes into the Rock'n'Roll HOF takes nothing away from his brilliance and the joy he has brought to our lives. He trully is "a Wizard and a True Star" to all of us.

It is truly a shame that they have been unable to resolve whatever differences they have had and cling to. I would agree that a reunion is not completely impossible but it is going to take one of them reaching out directly with each other. Dennis clearly is willing to take the call.

I've subscribed to Real Music Observer for some time, largely because he's talking about band from my time and I like hearing about them. Not a lot of people care about that music anymore and it's nice to hear things, but I don't necessarily agree with his takes most of the time. This video came across my feed today and I absolutely agree with your take in Styx. I also subscribed. Glad to meet you, mate.

My understanding gleaned from an interview with Tommy Shaw was that Dennis wanted to take the band in a more showy costume Kilroy kind of direction/production. Dennis wrote all the sappy stuff that Tommy and the rest of the band did not enjoy as much as Dennis. They were always a dichotomy of musical direction. Personally I liked the more rockin' aspect of Styx music....Renegade, Blue Collar man....
@pepperdog2039

your understanding is based on what lies shaw and young have spread. after kilroy there was edge of the century with no so called costumes and two huge comeback torus in 96 and 97 without any of the same. kilroy was one album. deyoung turned shaws coustic ballad in to a rocker therby making shaw the big rocker. what rockers did shaw write on kilroy 0 on PT she cares?

That doesn't match up to what happened at the time. The KWH porject was a one off project. The others in the band, especially JY agreed to do the project as long as the next album would go back to the types of albums they had been doing as well as Dennis agreeing to do a "Greatest Hits" stadium tour to follow their next project. All of these past issues Tommy and JY cite regarding their choice to replace Dennis never came up when they were doing the '96/'97 tours.

Agreed-it’s no different than any major employer, and there have even been cases where TV shows have replaced key cast members- MASH comes to mind. Nothing can diminish Dennis’ contributions, he is undeniably the person most responsible for Styx’s success. They took what he built and have run with it.

Although I had been listening to Styx since their debut my first Styx Concert was the 'Cornerstone' Tour. It was a great concert but as far as the album was concerned even though it had the #1 hit 'Babe' I still thought the album itself was a let down coming off of the previous 2 albums, 'Grand Illusion' & 'Pieces of Eight'. The Song 'First Time' was at the time when I first heard it & is still to me a god-awful song from Dennis DeYoung and I still dislike it to this day. I'll be bold and say it's one of their worst songs that they ever recorded much like IMO 'Love', Touchin', Squeezin' by Journey is their worse ever recorded song. But, that same year I saw Foreigner and to be honest, they blew Styx away as far as a Concert. But, that's me at that time and from what I can remember. Great Drummers of all time - Neal Peart (Rush), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)

JC quit John was too ill and retired dying months later. deyoung was recording and album with shaw and young and asked for 6 months to recover and they replaced him. please end these comparisons of apples to apples they are not. deyoung has tried for years to arrange one last tour for the fans but shaw always says he just wants to be happy and the fans do not matter only himself. why is he the only one you have never interviewed? if shaw wanted it it would be so young doesn't matter. there is no equal blame and remember your favorite cornerstone record would not have been recorded without deyoung's leadership. young and their manager objected to boat on the river but not first time. interesting. todd would not be the drummer without deyoung's insistence because young wanted his drummer Kenny. every story has 2 sides except this one styx which has had at least 4. 3 by styx and deyoung only one. your fantasy polaroid moment has always been in shaw's hands. sorry thom i posted this in the wrong post

Recently talking heads got back together for some interviews. They didn’t play together but it was good to see. REM as well! They did end up performing which was great! Now I know they are entire bands not just reuniting with one member. I wanted the same with Peter cetera and Chicago. I think they did actually talk and things didn’t go well. Steve Perry and journey reunited for the hall induction only. So it can happen. I’ve seen Styx a few times and unfortunately it was all after dennis left. You’re right they should just get together because yeah, Father Time is playing a bigger role every day that goes by and he unfortunately always wins. So come one guys! Let’s do this!
