Ugh. The level of shady manipulation and the delusions of grandeur displayed by Kanye throughout this phone call are sickening. There is something to be said about his mental health issues providing a scapegoat for the behavior, as portrayed in the public eye, but that angle really does a disservice to the already polarizing stigma associated with mental health. He was simply acting in a self-absorbed and deceitful manner in order to obtain whatever verbiage he needed from Taylor to serve as his justification (once edited appropriately) for his message and as fuel for the gas lighting that he would thrust upon her and the public post release. When the deserved outcome of outrage ensued, illiciting the reactionary push back, following the release of the real lyrics, which were clearly intended to be a misogynistic grab at credit for her success, Kanye doubled-down on his dispicable actions by allowing (or maybe encouraging) Kim to release the illegally recorded and seriously manipulated snippet of that conversation in efforts to triangulate the masses and bury Taylor. The fall out was immense and frankly i don't begrudge Taylor for still working through that trauma ten years later. No one can honestly judge the severity of the damage to a victim of such malignant narcissitic abuse when world wide exposure from that level of fame is involved. Especially when the victim had developed their core personality traits under the blanket of fame since pre-teenage years. That kind of devistation hits at the core. I wish everyone would give her more space and time and grace, should she still be healing the wounds a mere decade later. The psyche is a powerful thing and trauma runs deep....at a cellular level, at times. We don't begrudge cancer patients who are still battling the disease 10 years post diagnosis. Why do we think mental health should be any less critical. Kanye's struggle with mental health is well documented by now, but this incident is more of an example of insecurity, bad character and a defective moral compass versus a side effect of mental health issues. In lieu of it all, however, i do believe change is possible in some and i hope he is seeking it. I also hope Taylor continues to use her art to heal her pain and maintains the benevolence and selflessness in releasing said art, as it undoubtedly is medicinal and therapeutic to those who need it.
