I have the 6055. Cost £100 Works fine except no AM band which is not a problem as I only listen to FM and phono. I am very pleased with it. I even sorted the back light for the meter by using a green marker pen as it had faded! They are good units.

I am a fan of different speakers for different genres. The large advents have a great sound. I love them. I have Boston A150s and still prefer the advents. Klipsch big boys do need a large room. I had some that I sold because they were too much for the space.

I have five different Denon turntables and one of them is a DP-11F unit which plays perfectly with no issues at all. I think I bought it for around $100 to $125 in total from an eBay seller back in the late-1990s or very early 2000s and the bid price was probably $51 with $49 shipping to Canada because there was no such thing as a "vinyl revival" back then, so turntables were very affordable to downright cheap. I also have a Denon DP-7F (like a black version of the DP-11F), DP-45F, DP-47F, and DP-1100 (which is fully manual direct-drive with a pitch control compared to the others that are fully automatic quartz-locked direct-drive). My favourites of them all are the DP-45F and DP-47F for their durability, reliability, gorgeous style, and ease of use with some great features. :)

I bought a Yamaha P500 turntable with a Grace F-9 cartridge at a thrift shop for $10. I thought it was gonna be broken or something, but I was blown away at how great it sounded, Best cartridge I ever owned. I could listen to it for hours without fatigue.

Yeah, the issue with vintage is it all needs to be replaced inside re. the musicality, so it gets replaced with modern caps etc. so no longer vintage but for the box. Not the OG sound. Basically, a Frankenstein.

In 2011 I bought an SX-1250 and an SX-1980 from a deceased estate sale from original owner's widow for AU$200.00 incl original boxes, packing, manuals, brochure and purchase receipts and both looked brand new. I sold them in mid 2023 for AU$23,450.00 (US$15,261.26) the pair! Nice profit indeed and they both sounded awful!!!! LOL

All these morons on the Internet foaming at the mouth spending $10k - $15k on the so-called "Holy Grail" Vintage receiver - Pioneer SX-1980 are an endless source of amusement for me. I bought one of those at a used record store just 5 years ago for $250. That was ALL it was worth. lol PT Barnum was right. "There's a sucker born every minute."

I don't blame the people that sell them. It's all the idiots ( Tone-Deaf, or old Foggies with bad hearing ) who spend $12,000 for an SX-1980 that sounds like low-fi mud that I laugh at. Seriously, are these people so stupid that they don't know they can buy used High-End gear ( Threshold, Audio Research, Conrad Johnson, Mark Levinson, McIntosh, etc... ) Gear for less than half that amount and and actually HEAR the notes the musicians are putting on the record??

I had two 1050 receivers hooked up to four CS-99 speakers and then a 15” Velodyne subwoofer. Those old Pioneer receivers had a sort of magical sound to them especially after about 4 hours of listening when they were warmed up. I adjusted the bias and dc offset (I bought a service manual) and dioxed them too. They had sort of a “tube” like sound to them and a very immersive soundstage. Back then in 2006 they were sleepers and a near mint one could be had for about $150.00.

I'm from México and In 2016 I was living in Houston. A neighbour threw his Pioneer SX-1280 because it didn't work anymore, but I picked it and brought it to México where I took it to an audio equipment repair store and they fixed it for 3,000 pesos, that's around 170 dollars.

That low frequency speaker distortion was called "rumble" back when phonos were popular.
@annon231
@annon231 12 күн бұрын
Sorry, you are only partly correct. The term "rumble" had little to do with any of the many types and causes of low-frequency speaker distortions. Rumble refers to low-frequency artifact noise generated by the record-playing turntable. It is a low-frequency resonance from the pickup arm or a noisy turntable bearing. This resonance is usually in the 10-30 Hz region.

Pioneer for some reason has a group of fanboys that overpay for gear. All brands made some great gear. Bad transistor or a cold solder joint. Caps are a given at this age. I prefer Yamaha CA series units.
@1970borntorun
@1970borntorun 13 күн бұрын
Fanboys would be a correct descriptor for them. Even amongst Vintage receivers, Pioneer are about the worst, sonically. They are muddy in the low-end, don't have particularly good resolution, and have a a good deal of distortion. Which most people call "warmth". The best Vintage brands for sonic merit are Yamaha, Sansui and Sony. Those 3 brands stand out because they actually cared about low-distortion circuitry, transparency and a neutral tonal balance. Pioneer, not so much.

I don't have this series, but I do run an SX-838 which I like quite a bit-have that on some old KLH Model Sixes from the same era. And I have an SX-3900, the series after the SX-X80s. The Fluoroscan period. Quite powerful. Don't have that running at the moment. But when I do, I will hook up my Boston Acoustics A200s to it. Expecting good things there! (had some repairs done on the tuner section in the SX-3900). Would love to own an SX-1250! But the prices there are prohibitive!

I found some of these recently in the trash and brought them home to see if anything was worth sabing since the cabinets got reuined by water befre i found them. Anyways the 12" woofers are the cheapest speakers i have ever seen in my life with a magnet that looks like it should be on a tweeter hahahaha. The mids & tweets sound decent though and i already used the tweets in another project. I still have the mids and the cool gold rimmed covers waiting to be used.

Putting some nice coaxial 6x9s and a set of cool looking aluminum feet would make these great speakers for a kitchen or something. I enjoy keeping these kinds of low end speakers alive by making them sound decent because they look cool and will be lost to history if they are not made decent enough to provide clear music.

I would make these dit on the sides so they are wide not tall. I do this often as it gives them a better style in my opinion. I just turned a 70s Nikko monitor cabinet into a bluetooth speaker and mounted the feet on the side so it sits wide. Looks great and sounds sweet for what it is.

I installed a new cartridge. The tone arm goes down but doesn't start on some records and retracts to starting position. Not always. But when it does start properly, it eventually starts to skip on every record. It may be the third or fourth track but will do so on every record. Help!!

I really like this machine. The one thing I don't like is I have to be very careful not to scrape the top of the record against the sharp bottom of the lid when putting the record on and off the spindle. Other than that it's a fantastic player and sounds better than some very much more expensive modern decks.
