I try to save too. I take the vm wool in small amounts an knock it on a cake cooling rack. I pull it open it up and still keep tapping Abit tedious, but it works. Something you can do on down time 👋😊🌺 But you didnt mention about the possibly of neps, and they were there

When you talked about what is your joy in spinning, and that it’s achieving the most consistent yarn possible I said “Yes!” As to the question “Why don’t you just go out and buy some yarn?” the answer is easy. It’s not just the process and the achievement in itself. It’s the end product. It’s something YOU made. It’s better than commercial yarn because there is no way that a machine made can compare. Because you have control over the quality of the base material. Except for the really expensive yarns, the staple length of the initial fibre will be the shortest they can get away with. You don’t need to make that choice. Over time, you get to be in the driver’s seat more and more, and achieve the end product YOU want. Worsted or woolen prep, the choice is yours. Worsted or woolen spin, you get to choose. Thickness of the thread, you get to choose. Less pilling, less wear and tear. I only started to spin a little less than a year ago. My preference goes to spinning superfine lace thread because it’s what I prefer to knit with. And I absolutely love it, despite me still having to work on achieving the fineness of what you are spinning.

Question....is Mr. Bates spun fiber plied or singles?...Trying to see on the video..... it looks like they are singles. Also, do you wash the skeins after spinning? If so, do you use detergent or just water please? And lastly, do you weight them while drying? Thank you Kindly

I like your video. I to am a person who doesn't like tossing out usable fiber . I experimented with a extremely dirty bit of fleece . This fleece had good length of fiber at the neck but it was absolutely full of hay and chaff. I broke it apart each lock and brushed it with just a simple slicker dog brush .. the kind that looks like a carder. The long locks looked clean and lovely. I had a tub of gross garbage so I spun it chaff and all and knit a dog bed .. put it in the wash and then the dryer . It felted into a very good dog blanket. This could work for a rug as well. I am not fearful of a little veg now

I made a bunch (6 pounds) of semi-worsted two ply which I made into socks. I have socks that are ten years old and show almost no signs of wear and nothing keeps my feet warmer than my homespun yarn. I have tried Lion Brand and other types of commercial wool yarn and nothing compares to my homespun. Fulling material I wove (Ten ends per inch, 36 inches wide) is a pain for sure. I use ordinary dog combs because I haven't done much real fine singles as you showed on the face of the quarter

Thank you for this video! It popped up in my feed at exactly the right time! In August I bought my first spindles. Due to a back injury that’s pretty stubborn I can’t spend a lot of time knitting my beloved lace shawls, and I a friend asked le why I didn’t spin instead. She’s been spinning for years and gave me great advice. Within days I had discovered that supported spindles are more my thing than drop spindles and now I can produce a reasonably consistent lace weight yarn (2-ply). This made my friend laugh as it was exactly as she predicted. A few days ago I bought myself the EEW Nano2 as my home is tiny and my budget even tinier… and the back injury also means nerve damage causing partial loss of functionality in one of my legs. Now that merino combed top seems to work well in my hands I’m hungry for other fibres. Each time I spin, I have a specific lace project in mind and spin the yardage I would need for that project and some extra. I’ve already managed to spin together the yarn needed for several projects and can’t wait to completely finish those! I don’t think I’ll be able to find paco-vicuña where I live but one can dream… for the day I’ve developed your skill at spinning! Seeing how you handle this wonderful fibre helped me a lot. Happy spinning and greetings from Europe!

So helpful, no fuss, simple foolproof care methods, keeping the fleece's integrity the whole time. I like the pre wash rinse in cold water, so much dirt gone allowing the detergents into the greese.

Hi Sue, I now soak for about 20 minutes in tap hot water which I think works a bit better than cold overnight except in instances where there is caked mud or the like, where time is needed to loosen the dirt. Twenty minutes in hot is extremely good at removing dust, suint and other loose dirt.

My wheel is a Timbertops, the model is Thurmaston 24". These are rather rare wheels, they were made in the UK and are no longer made as far as I know. An Ashford Elizabeth is very similar and much easier to find.

Thanks for a brilliant video. I love washing wool also. We have muddy fields in western Washington so lots of dirty tips which I have been known to soak for a week in rainwater. Since I use only rainwater I heat on an outside double burner camp stove with large canning kettles. I'm washing Romeldale right now so I'm letting it sit until lukewarm. I skim off any lanolin before taking out. Love your drying racks. You have done another great video. Thanks so much!

Sensational videos!😎🤙 I got my 1st fleece ever. Free. Way Dirty . But wow in a bucket of Dawn and hot tap water it went from yellow to white in the 1st wash. I did 2 more washes then 1 rinse. But its wet and I think I felted it. What characteristics are felted wool? My grandmother used to sew wool into blankets for winter. She would create a dinner roll type shape with material then stuff each pocket with wool. I'd love to try it now.
