You can always tell the quality of a hunter by how he acts after taking a life. Thanking your prey is a must to me.

Awesome handgun hunt! I just acquired a custom shop XP in the same caliber. Will see how it recoils but may have it Mag Na Ported. What is your pet load used in this hunt? I will be reloading, also. Thanks!

The dog breaks almost every time. That’s really dangerous for the dog.
@HoltzOutdoors2 ай бұрын
Sometimes she “breaks” but only after the shot never on the shot call. There is a big difference there, but yea breaking can be dangerous in the wrong setup and especially if you are hunting with people that you shouldn’t be hunting with. I will say in River current like this you are likely to loose birds if you don’t send your dog right away….no lost birds here and after 6 years of thousand bird seasons my dog is still around the tell the tale. 👊

After looking at it zoomed in and in slomo about 1000times I think it was actually off the front shoulder and down the side of the body. Doesn’t matter in the end… I didn’t recover it until the next season when my buddy found its deadhead about 1/4 mile away.

@HoltzOutdoors in GA that bird would be the husband's kill He should not of even had a gun in his hand after his tagged his limit
@HoltzOutdoors3 ай бұрын
@@jamesshockley4311are you telling me in GA if you shoot a deer or turkey and it’s laying on the ground kicking about to expire and someone else comes and puts it out of its misery they get to tag it? I have a really hard time believing that…and if that is legally true you should really work with your legislature to follow to rest of the country and adopt the rule of first blood.
@thebozfam3 ай бұрын
fortunately James is correct in all 50 states, if you tag out on turkey you as you accompany some else on their harvest and you are tagged out you can not posses a gun or even handle that weapon it’s the responsibility of the person who shot the bird to complete the harvest if it’s not completely expired. So since you completed the kill he is right that’s your bird. I like your videos and watch everyone
@joshs89313 ай бұрын
So you shot two birds in Colorado? Why not have your wife shoot again if needed. You were tagged out. Shooting that bird again for your wife is a game violation! Come on man. I normally like your videos but I’d take this down before you get a ticket, no party hunting in Colorado.
@HoltzOutdoors3 ай бұрын
Since you were nice in your criticism and I believe you to be sincere I will respond. 1. There is absolutely nothing illegal about this. The bird was clearly dieing and sprawled out, unable to move. I simply put it out of its misery which I don’t not regret and would do 100 times over 2. research rule of first blood and honestly ask yourself if you would want me to follow your advice if this were opposite I.e what if I shot first and had her finish an already dead bird and had her put her tag on it….Everyone would loose their mind because that would be wrong. 3.As a guide for an outfitter you are encourage to do the same thing for your clients to avoid loosing game that will Parrish anyways and not be tagged if not recovered 4.I am not going to lie my wife was really shook up and has never had to deal with anything like this before so I took the most ethical route and finished an already dead bird. My hope is this didn’t ruin hunting for her as it was only her third hunt ever. I hope this better explains things and if you are an experienced hunter taking out a youth or novice you take the same actions I did :)

I was under the assumption you can only get 1 black hills tag as non resident?

Only one shotgun tag but you can also get an archery bird. There are also draw units that are technically prairie but they stretch up into or near the black hills :)

Suggesting throwing a shot into brush when the shooter can’t see the bird? 😬 “The shot will go right through.” Yikes.
@HoltzOutdoors3 ай бұрын
We could see the bird clear as day and we had been casing it for half a mile. He had multiple chances to take it, but waited until right before we are about to be on the public boundary. If I am being completely honest we had better shot opportunities earlier. So waiting isn't always the best option.

Good video, getting psyched for spring turkey coming up, just a friendly word of caution, on public land, I wouldn't be walking and hiding behind a decoy like that, just a word from someone who's lived and hunted Colorado my whole life, good luck this spring
@HoltzOutdoors3 ай бұрын
I hunt roughly 8 states every year for turkeys. There are definitely places where I would never hide behind a reaper decoy. Colorado is much better than places like the south both for hunting pressure and the denseness of cover. No matter the state I will never use one by a road. However, in this case we were 3 miles up a mountain and there were no trucks at the trailhead and no other access points to this location so I wasn't too worried. Like everything you just need to be smart about it.

Idk how the hell you find all the public land spots in Colorado, everytime I go to a public land place here it is absolutely packed and usually terrible hunting
@HoltzOutdoors6 ай бұрын
Lot's of scouting my friend and that is a group effort! People don't realize how much work it is, but when it comes together there is nothing more beautiful. Another thing people get confused about is the idea of a "spot" I almost never hunt the same place twice. You will never get a true banger if you do go to where the ducks already are and have been long enough to build.
