7:45 question, who is claiming these things? Do you have sources for those who say that the text was "corrupted"? I've read a lot. Graduated from seminary and so forth...but not heard anything from conservative believing scholars who aren't supportive of the TR

A circumstantial case for the Comma of John: In 484 A.D. the bishop of Carthage with 400 bishops quoted the comma to an Arian Vandal king. Being the bishop of Carthage, he would have had access to the Scriptures of Cyprian, and he probably had a Vulgate, maybe a first edition. Also, Gregory Nazianzus wrote on the grammar, and he had a student named Jerome. Seems strong evidence to me. Blessings.

And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. -Jeremiah 29:13 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. -John 3:16 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out. -Acts 3:19 If you’re in North America, please go check out any of the churches available to you: OPC, PCA, Rpcna, Urcna, or a Canrc church (These are conservative and actual Presbyterian/Reformed churches) If you can’t find one of the conservative presby churches then, maybe an Lcms Lutheran church. If you’re Scottish, I recommend the Free Church of Scotland and the APC. (Different from the Church of Scotland) If you’re English I recommend the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England & Wales and the Free Church of England (Different from the Church of England) Also online you can look up church finders for each of the groups, it will show you locations. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. - Hebrews 10:24-25

C. Colwell offers a grammatical rule explaining the use of the article with a predicate nominative in the Greek New Testament.22 This rule seems to justify the trinitarian translation of John 1:1. Colwell says: A definite predicate nominative has the article when it follows the verb; it does not have the article when it precedes the verb. Of course, this can be claimed as a rule only after it has been shown to describe the usage of the Greek New Testament as a whole or in large part. . . . The opening verse of John’s Gospel contains one of the many passages where this rule suggests the translation of a predicate as a definite noun. Kai Theos en ho logos looks much more like “And the Word was God” than “And the Word was divine” when viewed with reference to this rule. The absence of the article does not make the predicate indefinite or qualitative when it precedes the verb; it is indefinite in this position only when the context demands it. The context makes no such demand in the Gospel of John, for this statement cannot be regarded as strange in the prologue of the gospel, which reaches its climax in the confession of Thomas.23 On closer examination, one finds that rather than supporting the trinitarian view, Colwell’s evidence and conclusions disprove the belief that John teaches the doctrine of a triune deity. Colwell’s evidence indicates that this is not an absolute rule but one which has a number of exceptions.24 In addition, citing John 1:1 as an example, he states that context is important in determining whether a predicate nominative before a verb is indefinite. However, in support of his position that context demands that the predicate be definite in this verse, he states that this Gospel “reaches its climax in the confession of Thomas” (John 20:28) in which Thomas refers to Jesus as “my Lord and my God.” At the heart of Colwell’s statement is a theological bias on his part, not a judicious opinion based on either grammar or context. Colwell says: “The absence of the article does not make the predicate indefinite or qualitative when it precedes the verb; it is indefinite in this position only when context demands it.” According to his explanation, a predicate noun, e.g., “god,” in the predicate nominative “and god was the Word,” is indefinite before the verb only when the context demands it. He then asserts that “the context makes no such demand in the Gospel of John.” Actually, the very opposite is true. In John 1:1, context does demand that the second “god” mentioned in this verse be indefinite. In fact, considering the context of the entire New Testament, Colwell’s rule is not applicable to John 1:1. John 1:1 is the most obvious exception to his rule; no definite article is to be implied before the second mention of “god” in John 1:1. Translating theos as “divine” or “a god” in order to express the nature of the Word, rather than identifying his person, is consistent with John’s use of Philo’s teachings and terminologies in order to explain his own Logos doctrine. The lack of the definite article before the word “god” most certainly represents John’s theological intention. 22 E.C. Colwell, “A Definite Rule for the Use of the Article in the Greek New Testament,” Journal of Biblical Literature 52 (1933), pp. 12-21. 23 Colwell, pp. 13, 21. 24 Colwell, pp. 16-18. © Gerald Sigal Continued…

Why you can ignore “Sharp’s Rule” July 31, 2022 Listen to this post: In my recent dialogue with Dr. William Lane Craig, I was surprised when he appealed to “Sharp’s Rule” in order to deduce “the deity of Christ” from a few verses. In this new discussion, I say what I should have said then about this bogus, theologically-motivated modern invention. The ordinary believer does not need to know the ins and outs of koine Greek grammar in order to evaluate “Granville Sharp’s Rule” - really, nowadays “Daniel Wallace’s Rule,” according to which 2 Peter 1:1 and Titus 2:13 assert that Jesus and God are the same person. One need only look beyond the verses in question to see each author in a wider context assuming the distinctness of Jesus and God. Charity requires that we not view each author as contradicting himself within the space of a few verses, and so, he simply can’t be collapsing together Jesus and God by only using one “the” for both of them in one sentence. In fact, the two verses above are the two New Testament counterexamples which show the alleged universal rule to be false. In this new discussion with Josiah of Integrity Syndicate, we discuss the above, and also the odd history of this would-be grammatical discovery

Hello. I have a question about Herman Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics... I'm thinking of getting my self a copy of the 4 volumes and reading them, however, I noticed that he made reference to a 'yahwist' somewhere in his writings. Does this mean that he subscribed to the JEDP theory of the composition of the Pentateuch? Just wondering whether or not this is true. Any comments and/or help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What a yawn. Arcane writings interpreting ancient and irrelevant scriptures from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Volumes of arcane and irrelevant interpretations are all over the ballpark, regarding a lot of First Century metaphysical and religious nonsense. Systematic Theology takes one down a religious rabbit hole of such useless information, it becomes the first step in acquiring a theologically induced OCD disorder and a neurotic world-view. Good grief ... close the Bible, stop obsessing and get a life.

The doctrine of preservation is pretty irrational when you think about it. The Church proceeded with errors in the Septuagint for hundreds of years before Jerome's vulgate. On that basis, textual criticism and preservation are not in conflict; otherwise you would need to prove a full and accurate Bible throughout the entire age.

My recommendation is to go the iconic dispensationalist juggernaut of a systematic: Lewis Sperry Chafer's eight-volume Systematic Theology is a formidable work. It's from 1947 and is a comprehensive. It also captures and details classic dispensationalism. Second recommendation would be the 1986 one-volume Basic Theology by Charles Ryrie. Both men were from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Allot to comment on here gentlemen. Let me start by saying People need to read and understand history regarding the origins of the TR and CT. I have heard James White and can’t believe that he supports the CT Bible versions because he believe the proponents were practicing good scholarship. As smart and learned as he is, I believe he is wrong on this point. These discussions are to often over simplified by Pastors saying “the Greek says this”. The problem is which Greek manuscript are they referring to. At the risk of sounding self righteous, most people are theologically and biblically ignorant. Blessings in Christ.

Are the gospels legends? Another point is that on that view you would have to regard the accounts of the Man as being legends. Now, as a literary historian, I am perfectly convinced that whatever else the Gospels are they are not legends. I have read a great deal of legend and I am quite clear that they are not the same sort of thing. They are not artistic enough to be legends. From an imaginative point of view they are clumsy, they don’t work up to things properly. Most of the life of Jesus is totally unknown to us, as is the life of anyone else who lived at that time, and no people building up a legend would allow that to be so. Apart from bits of the Platonic dialogues, there are no conversations that I know of in ancient literature like the Fourth Gospel. There is nothing, even in modern literature, until about a hundred years ago when the realistic novel came into existence. In the story of the woman taken in adultery we are told Christ bent down and scribbled in the dust with His finger. Nothing comes of this. No one has ever based any doctrine on it. And the art of inventing little irrelevant details to make an imaginary scene more convincing is a purely modern art. Surely the only explanation of this passage is that the thing really happened? The author put it in simply because he had seen it. C.S. Lewis, "What Are We to Make of Jesus Christ?" (1950)

Hello! Taylor, wanted to know how your view diverges from Letis in Ecclesiastical Text. There’s a chapter where he applies Brevard Child’s canonical method relative to a variant in John 1:18 “the onlybotten God/Son”- is your method for canonical preservation the same?

In the second premise of the TR position, regarding the preservation of the TR readings prior to collation- does this result in less of the Critical Text's premise- the church still lacked a historically visible document with the collated autographic equivalent to the work done by the KJV translators reflected in the text critical decisions collated in Scrivener's TR? That is, confessionally, the equivalent to the TR existed somewhere, or at least was accessible to some region of churches, to the churches as a collective, but wasn't historically visible? Thanks for the guidance. I'm trying to think about the positions and been listening to you guys, Riddle, Van Kleeck, White, Ward, Letis... it's been an adventure!

I'm trying to evaluate this perspective, and would love direction from either you guys or Dr. Riddle's resources, or other resources, on how to deal with the variations in the TR tradition. I know it's a handful, but I would still be glad to know how to do it. Letis gives a procedure that I think becomes a functional Byzantine priority, but not necessarily one for TR sorting. Any advice on this?

Hi Prs. I'm a seminary student, and was introduced to this perspective via Letis' Ecclesiastical Text. I've been considering doing future graduate work on this, and I'm diving into Van Kleeck, Riddle, your resources, and trying to get an understanding of where it would be helpful to the church to do this kind of work. I've reached out to Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary and talked to a brother there about some lines I'm thinking about studying, but I wanted to know if you knew anyone who'd done work on the Reformed doctrine of Inspiration/Providential Preservation, specifically among the Puritans. Sounds from teh comments below you've done some of this work already to serve the Body. Thank you!

All due respect, my brother, but most of these contain a STRONG Reformed theological strain. Every systematic theology comes from a SPCIFIC theological school of thought; Reformed, Presbyterian (Buswell), Strong (Baptist), Oden (Methodist) Thiessen (Southern Baptist), etc. I learned early in my walk with Christ, use these to GATHER all texts that are relevant to a certain doctrine and THEN read each passage at least 20 times in one sitting (live in the text and watch it come alive!). I say this respectfully friends, do not allow yourself to fit-in to any theological school of thought; be a Bible student. Moreover, HOW CAN YOU RECOMMEND A MAN LIKE DABNEY WHO CLAIMED THAT "the Father made three productions of the Son"? I welcome your response, friend and appreciate what you are trying to do. My name is George Luke. I'm thinking about diving into this more. I was interested to the Ecclesiastical Text by Letis, looked at Owen's account on Providential Preservation, thumbed through the Majority Text papers edited/contributed to by Letis, listened to Riddle, to Van Kleeck, and I've been trying to work out where to land. Been benefitting from your channel and Dwayne Green's channel. Would it be possible to get a reading list on this topic of Textual Criticism? You reference the preface of the 1881 Schrivener text, and how Erasmus, Tyndale, and Beza etc all go together here. Would it be possible to get more notes/research on this?
