Goble is referred to as a computer, and that was her job description, but what she did went beyond that. Computers did the calculations requested of them by engineers or scientists who did the problem solving. She went beyond just doing calculations and took on the analysis that precedes the calculations. By the late 1950s they were starting to be replaced by digital computers, and by the late 1960s they were pretty much extinct. But until then they were a part of every major scientific institution in the world. In the early 1880s Edward Pickering became director of the Harvard College Observatory. He was not happy with the quality of the data analysis at the observatory and ended up firing the men responsible for that job and hired his maid Willamina Fleming. Eventually she become head of a large staff of observatory computers, who much later ended up being known as Pickering's harem. Fleming and a few of the others made discoveries of their own and were eventually recognized for their scientific accomplishment. They were the leaders of women being accepted as astronomers in their own right starting in the early 20th century. But I digress.

Most of the movie is made up drama, and a huge reversal of who did what. In real life, the computers simply plugged in numbers to equations that the scientist and engineers came up with. That's why they didn't usually put their name on reports.

Women, much less black women have been relegated to the shadows, while men got the acknowledgement. It has changed, but not enough.

Why weren't her accomplishments acknowledged right after she help Glenn orbit the moon? Why did it take 53 years to acknowledge what this woman did? The truth shall come to the light! No matter how hard or how long anyone tries to withhold something, God will reveal it!

Katherine Johnson was extensively recognized and awarded long before the movie came out. Don't mistake Hollywood's suddenly waking up to her story, for being given credit at all. Still, the _increased_ awareness of her accomplishments brought on by the movie, is well-deserved.

When the space craft splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, I was watching it on my black and white TV. I saw the Navy Aircraft Carrier send out the helicopter to pick up the space craft. At the time, I questioned myself how did the Navy know where to be at that time? I finally got my answer. Thank you Mrs. Kathern Gobble.

No, there is no _THE_ reason, friend, but a combination of many factors. The German scientists certainly played a significant part in the US space program, but their contributions were not all-determinant.

Jim Parson plays the same character that he did in big bang theory but without the canned laughter. Annoying, spiteful and disrespectful. Obviously he’s been tested and there’s nothing wrong with him 😂 history will not look kindly at his character.

I knew a number of math teachers in my youth. Keven Costner’s look was spot on for all of them. Crew cut, the style of glasses, the skinny black ties, white shirt and suit coat that as author Jean Shepard said, it looked as if it was made of wet and dry sandpaper. The visual effects were also spot on. It looked as if they stepped out of 1962.

I'm old enough to remember typing before the little ball appeared. Long, pivoted arms, with one character each, manually actuated. It had a rhythm that was lost once the ball came on the scene.

There was a lot of times throughout history when women did the work and man got the credit. In WW11, Hoover to the credit for a woman decoder, we won some of the battles because of her work and Hoover walked away with all the credit.

My grandfather is also a Paul Stafford…..although I know Jim Parson’s role did not depict a real person, it is still hard for me to watch at times, because this was nothing like the Paul Stafford I knew.
@cardinalRG
@cardinalRG Ай бұрын
_"...this was nothing like the Paul Stafford I knew."_ That's unsurprising. Hollywood can never trust the appeal of a real-life account, and just tell the story. It always has to screw around with it, because screenwriters think they can improve upon actual history. The way I see it, if a piece of history is worth telling at all--and Katherine Johnson's story certainly is--then it doesn't need manipulating.
