What a delightful, simple gonk . I have to pick up some economy priced spanners and make some tenon sizing tools . I prefer not to put any finish on the nose tenon so that my wood glue bonds well Cheers from Gary in Duluth Minnesota USA

I’ve just received one of these and in my excitement of turning a Christmas ornament (I am a beginner) I loaded my prepared piece onto Chuck with tailstock supporting it. After a while the whole piece flung off … so I glued it again. I then started on my second prepared piece and just a minute into turning that flew off the Chuck. My piece was an inside out ornament. I’m using gorilla glue and the piece was square … what am doing wrong? 😊🤦‍♀️

@@hayleywood93 Hi Hayley... It's difficult to advise you without seeing what you have done... If you could send me pictures of the piece mounted in the chuck and wit the tailstock support.. I might be able to see if there is anything wrong with your method... My email address is [email protected] I haven't tried an inside out Christmas ornament yet but I have seen them made.. Usually 4 pieces fastened together with double sided tape or tape wrapped around the outside for the 1st stage of turning.. Then inverted and glued together for the second stage... I'm assuming that you are using Gorilla wood glue.. its good stuff.. I like using it... make sure that you leave it overnight to cure fully... Also be careful when using tailstock support because you can drive the pieces apart with the point of the live centre in the tailstock... To stop this you can glue a piece of wood onto the tailstock end of your piece... Make sure you use light cuts as a catch cat RIP the piece out of the chuck... Despite teething problems I hope that you are enjoying your new hobby... I love it... I hope that this is of some help.. do not hesitate to ask for any help that I can give... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

@@AndysCornishCreationsHi Andy, many thanks for your speedy response. I think you’re right that the tail stock forced it apart, plus I had in the Chuck a square piece of wood in a round hole. 🤦‍♀️ It really didn’t have a chance!!! I will try what you have suggested and take photos… however I think it’s probably best that I start with an easy piece first 😃. Love your work and thanks for the offer of more advice … I think I’m going to need it ❤️

Hey Andy, beautiful seam ripper, great idea 👍🏻 will be on my “useful things to turn should I ever get to have my own lathe” list 😊 Talking about lathe… I suppose both your lathes got completely melted down in the fire? How has it been going otherwise? Did the insurance step in? Are you already working on building a new garage/workshop again? Well, keeping my fingers crossed for a good ending to the tragic event 🤞🏻Have a good weekend, Andy, looking forward to new videos when you are ready 😊 Take care, byeeee 👋🏻😉👋🏻 Jude

@@morningsong7885 hey Jude... It is a very useful tool for anyone interested in sewing... I'm afraid that both lathes, bands, table saws, chop saws, pillar drill, morticer, bobbin sander, bench sander, bench grinder, compressor, mig welder, drills, angle grinder, ride on mower, lawn mower, strimmers, hedge cutters, chain saws, leaf blower, shredder, cement mixer, jet washer, tile cutter, bicycle, surfboard, ladders, step ladders, many many hand tools... All gone... still sorting insurance claim out... Cleared site inside workshop.. walls still up but too badly damaged to leave... I have plans to re build a new workshop and garage but need insurance money to start... I hope that you and your family are all well and that you are enjoying the Sunshine and your garden... Have a lovely Sunday... Take care Jude... all the best from Andy 👋😉👋

Stay away from olive oil and mineral oil as a wood finish. Olive oil will go rancid, not something you want in contact with food. Mineral will not dry so is nothing more than a dust collector. Tung oil or boiled linseed are a much better choice, there are also proprietary lemon oils which are mineral oil based but with driers added and a lemon perfume.

I just finished rebuilding my lathe that I was given (50 years old) and just had my first practice at using it. When I get good at it I will have to try and make my own Gonk.. Though by that time it might be Christmas, so maybe a Christmas Gonk? Cheers and well wishes!

Andy I’m gutted pal I have just arrived in Cornwall and thought I would like to give you a visit if it was at all possible imagine how I felt seeing your video update I am stuck for words it just goes to show we makers have to make sure we are safe and sound in our workshops. My future son in law is a fireman and when he sees my workspace he has a fit and tells me how combustible everything is ….. my point is no matter how safe we think we are this sort of thing can strike at ANY TIME. I hope you are back up and running soon my heartfelt sympathy is with you. TC
