I like how you mention that most things you did in art school is copying. I didn't do art school but that definitely sounds right. In fact, I can't think of a study that doesn't teach based other people's theories. So everyone in every workfield is basically just parroting the best. I don't think that's wrong at all, I mean, why reinvent the wheel. I guess people want you to take those theories and create something of "your own", but honestly, what counts as "your own" is pretty vague too. If you copy+paste an image using digital means I think we can all agree that's stealing. But what if you copy 1 line? 2 lines? a dozen lines? how many lines does it take before it is no longer "your own"?
