Do you have your repository on GitHub? What did you write this in? I am an aspiring game developer just starting out and this is so purely inspiring to me as a beginner. What do you do in tech for your career? I saw this video in January and then couldn’t find it again after searching on KZfaq “procedurally generated my game” and stuff like that but I remembered I can look through all my history and I just spend an hour going through all my watched videos and I finally found this. This is like genius man it reminds me of hearing about Minecraft infdev early days and being mindblown one person could make something so amazing

I just received a Quest 2 as is a good price to start with VR and this is one of the games that take my attention... The graphics can look very simple but once you are on the game the inmersion is amazing and is really an amazing experience... I am agree that the trailer does not do justice to this game and is very cheap on Steam. Very good experience and a must for new VR people

Hi! I've been reading your blog looking for clues as to what noise function you used to generate the terrain, is it just old reliable perlin or is there more to it, would you mind answering me?

This is just surreal to me. Its like someone plucked my project out of my mind. You approach a few things differently than i intended toz youre definitely farther along and in less time, whcih is slightly demoralizing. You tiuch in important concepts about artistic control in procedural environments and making sure that can be expressed. I think your end goal is a bit different than mine, but we are building the same technology to get there. Procedural can be amazing, and awe inspiring, its not all repetition, its just that the tools we have cant accomolish better, and we have to build those tools ourselves to achieve our goals.

This is really impressive! Well done! I think the water pathfinding trick with the 5m radius was really clever. Another thought I had was to artificially raise the water level during the generation phase to simulate high water levels. It could then also get out from strange local minimas and "carve" out natural paths similar to your radius idea.

feel like you could sell this game/do it in partnership with some sort of like VR/AR running/biking workout technology. I would actually kind of love to slowly explore a MASSIVE forest on a treadmill, just following the criss-crossing paths further and further from the starting point

I tried making a game like this. It stems back from playing DayZ and always having the nickname "Walking Simulator", but when DayZ standalone came along they really flushed out the map and put in hiking trails. It was really fun to follow those trails. I decided I wanted to make a game where you could explore hiking trails through a park and I called it Hiking Simulator. I only got part of the map done before I got bored with the project. Basically just the parking area around the trail head and about 30 meters of trails leading off.

Its just my opinion. But I think that the paths with grass on the sides is to clean. It looks like it has been cut to make way for the paths. I think you should add some irregolarities. Im sorry if the English is broken. Im from Germany and not very good in English.
@runevision5 ай бұрын
Your English is perfectly understandable! And yeah, thinning out the grass near the paths would be nice, but it makes things a bit more complicated and it not my highest priority for now.

Look mate not a programmer here though I had a thought that might help. I was just thinking if you had a way to take a horizontal slice of the terrain and make the outline of it into a vector shape thing, you could then find the vertices closest to the center of said shape and add a node for your water, then drop down to the next slice and repeat, then overlap the shapes join the two bits of water vertically by finding the closest match of vertices. Water should only be able to go from one node into one lower node never splitting into two, though merging with another node is fine. This should make the water follow the lowest points on your terrain in theory, got no clue how much of a pain that would be to code but the idea is there. Flick me a message if you want me to do drawings or some shit.
@runevision5 ай бұрын
There are much simpler ways to make the water follow the lowest point in the terrain, but like I said in the video, that's not my intent as I want to be able to use water for level design purposes where I can explicitly control where it goes from and to.

Faster flowing water in higher elevations exposes rocks. Tons of rocks and boulders. Also vegetation near water is totally different than vegetation far from water. Get far enough from water and almost no vegetation at all.

Sir, you have made a unique and beautiful creation. [ insert image of Futurama's Philip J. Fry with a fist full of money shouting "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" ] Boy.. I would love to have something like this! Only by showing us this, you are inviting us to respond, so I'm going to blurt out the things that come to mind; do with them what you want. (Would you like to have a pro-bono creative assistant/advisor? :)) This might be an idea to make the waterfalls look better: For this you might need to also keep track of the rockiness (or perhaps only the elevation) of your terrain. Maybe if you make the pools at the bottom of the waterfalls larger when the surrounding area is flatter, they will look more natural. high up in the hills, you hardly have any pools, low down in the valleys you have larger pools, possible even with large rocks in the water surrounding the waterfall, but then the surrounding area should be have a higher rockiness value due to erosion. Also, why planks and not fallen logs or a formation of stepping-stone rocks? (just a procedural group of rocks with flat tops stuck halfway in the ground, using the same placing algorithm as the planks, maybe even have the density of these rocks fall over over distance, following the elevation of the water), because "who made those planks and put them there?" was the first question I thought of. Also, is it possible to vary the 'sharpness' (the grass density falloff) and width of the paths? lower elevation, more flat paths tend to be longer and wider, maybe with some standing water or mud here and there.

Hi, I'm glad you like what you're seeing here! Keep in mind this is very early stages, and I have a ton of ideas for where I'm planning to take this, which are not always overlapping so much with ideas that other people are suggesting. "who made those planks and put them there?" People or creatures did. I've never claimed there's no civilization in this world. I'm going to be adding occasional make-shift stairs and railings too, and other variations. But fallen logs was a potential variation I had already noted down, and I'm now adding stepping stones too. :)

Do you have a space where people can submit low-cost (relatively simple to program) things that could really visually improve your creation? I would love for the community to see how they could help you create an even more beautiful system.
@runevision6 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what things you mean? Contribute 3D models? Or just suggest ideas? Or? In any case I'm not so sure it would work well, as there would be a lot of overhead from communication in order to ensure everyone is on the same page, that everything fits coherently together, and that people don't end up wasting time creating things that won't be used anyway. Do you have other projects you can point to where community contributions to a game in progress are working out well, so I could get a better idea of what you mean?
