I would place the coils on top of the valve covers and orient the coils so the wires are short as possible. This would protect the coils and wires from the exhaust heat.

I still say to bolt a sbc head on that block and make some real power. And that cover might be an alternative distributor mount? Check the cam you have for that iron Duke, I think it will have 2 distributor gears on it. I think they used the same cam cores for the Pontiac iron Duke and the Chevy Stove bolt 4 cylinder which is the same platform the 3.0L Mercruiser. Make sure if you do decide to make a sbc head bolt on your iron Duke to buy the Chevy version cam because the valve layout is different between the 2 engines.😎👍

My backburner is a 2008 (I think) Mini Cooper S ... car was given to me after it had burnt a 2nd valve - the first one failed 13 months prior to the 2nd one. The shop charged a friend 5k to fix *1* valve, and didn't bother with the other 15 which led to the next failure down the line. I bought all the replacement parts including steel valves - but the more I read about how much the car has to be ripped apart, the less I want to do it on a lousy Peugeot engine that's notorious for failures.

Extended it using weatherproof connectors that match that one - that way if the extra wiring adds more resistance and throws off the reading, you can revert it back without cutting and splicing a second time while you figure out another solution. Also, header tape wrap might be a safe way to insulate those wires.

There are rare versions of this engine in possibly late 1995 and 1996 F150's that used an OBDII ECU and are relatively easy to tune, but all earlier versions are on the EEC-IV system and they not only suck to tune, they tend not to shoot codes when the engine has major issues, so yeah, I don't recommend them for tuning, or for anything at all for that matter. I literally hate EEC-IV at this point.
