I recently had this problem (2 weeks ago). I bought a Shimano M5100 crankset which is advertised as being compatible with a 48mm chainline, which is what I have because my rear wheel is a non-boost 135mm QR axle wheel. I installed the crankset and was having a tough time shifting into my larger gears. After measuring the chainline it turned out it was 55mm, so Shimano lied in their documentation. To solve this i just went to Home Depot and bought some M8 stainless steel washers. The washers measured 1.3mm thick, so i put two of them together on the chainring bolts in between the crank and my chainring and it pretty much solved my spacing issue. It's not 100% where it should be but it's close enough for me. I do want to go ahead and add one more washer but first I have to find some replacement chainring bolts that are long enough.

Chainline is also determined by your bottom bracket spindle width. You need both the crank/chainring and bottom bracket to work together to get the proper chainline; non-boost (48 to 50) and boost (51 to 53). The Shimano M5100 crankset has 3 versions; a 1X and a 2X for 135/142 rear hub and a boost version. You need the matching BB to get the correct chainline.
@NonLegitNation25 ай бұрын
@@yellowsheeps I've got the M5100 X1. For my BB I've got a Shimano MT800 which actually came with a couple shims. Thankfully I didn't use any of the shims because it would have made the problem even worse.
@yellowsheeps5 ай бұрын
@@NonLegitNation2 The MT800 is the XT bottom bracket for the XT 12 speed cranks. Not sure if there is a difference in spacing between the 11 speed Deore and 12 speed XT cranksets. In any case, the matching 11 speed Deore cranks use BB-MT501 or SM-BB52 bottom brackets for correct chainline. Was much easier to mix and match to get the correct chainline with square taper BB's and cranks.
@NonLegitNation25 ай бұрын
@@yellowsheeps thanks for the info. I'll go ahead and buy the MT501 or BB52 and see if that helps. Does it matter which one or would either of them work? I know my BB works with a 63/73 BB and it says the BB52 is 83 so I'm assuming go with the MT501?
@yellowsheeps5 ай бұрын
@@NonLegitNation2 MT501 is the new replacement for BB52. Both will work. However, looking at the Shimano specs, there are 3 versions of Deore M5100 cranks: FC-M5100-1 (1X for 135/142 and 148) with a chainline of 52mm. FC-M5100-2 (2X for 135/142) with a chainline of 48.8mm and FC-M5100-B2 (2X for 148) with a chainline of 51.8mm. You said you have a 1X crank for 135 QR, so if you use the recommended bottom brackets above, you will get a chainline of 52mm which will work with a 1X 10 or 11 speed cassettes.

Removing material off the pawl would make me nrervous. Each to their own. One thing that would improve the "A-frame" style stands that are so common, is to weld some strap on the sides where the legs are open. Those "zipper" welds that extend vertically above the open areas are often only welded on one side, inner or outer, and I've seen bad welds and some that are pretty decent, but they are all chinese. Strapping the legs together will greatly reduce any possibility of those zipper welds letting go and the stand pancaking. On Harbor Freight's current version, they have added leg straps. If you go to their site and look, you can see it and they call them reinforcement braces. Plus they added backup pins.

I didn't know that ratchet Jacks were failing until I watched the video earlier tonight. So I quickly searched KZfaq for Harbor Freight six-time jack stands failing and I came to yours. Not exactly a comfortable feeling that I'm getting under 9,000 lb of a semi truck working on it and if those jack stands give out I'll be a 220 lb hamburger pancake. I guess it's off the Home Depot to get some 4x4 cribbing going under the frame.

OK, you fixed it. But why do MTBers insist on back pedaling? Not a criticism, just a question?
@rallysol2 жыл бұрын
Don't always want to power to preferred foot position to setup for an obstacle? Sometimes you don't have clearance for a full crank so you kind of ratchet yourself along with partial cranks. At least that's what I find myself doing
@123moof Жыл бұрын
Backpedaling to get the pedals in a good starting position is common at traffic lights, or generally getting started from any sort of stop regardless of discipline. A good drive train should simply never frig up the derailleur from backpedaling or otherwise self-damage itself no matter what I do with the cranks.

I noticed that you have what looks like an Epoxy ceramic coating on your garage floor. I'm also looking at having this done to my garage and then later planning on installing a Max Jax car lift. How difficult/easy was it to drill through the coating to set in your anchor bolts? Also when you are bolting the lifts to the floor were there any issues with the texture of the coating created for the post to sit flat?
@rallysol2 жыл бұрын
Having an epoxy coating or not didn't make any difference in drilling the holes and I can't imagine it having any affect when installed. You'll shim around the individual bolts to square up the lift and any irregularities will just get crushed flat. To be honest, I haven't installed the lift on this floor as the slab is too thin.

I had some free time before the game started and decided to fix my HF stands. I punched the pin out and examined it and the mating surface of the pawl was definitely not square so ground that flat and came to the conclusion, just like you, that the concaved surface of the paisley shaped pawl was pressing against the bumps of the teeth when the top of the stand sways front to back. Took out some material just like you did. Glad to see that we came to the same conclusion. Took all of 20 minutes to figure things out and fix. Thx!
