Post graphite era. Pre poly era. Poly era. Three distinct game changing eras. Why baseball forbade metal bats and golf bighead drivers - made records meaningless to compare. College batters used to unbreakable bats get smoked inside in the bigs. Unlimited spin and super light sticks make for today's power attrition tactics. Post graphite pre poly is the yardstick era IMO - Pete, Ivan, Boris, Stephan were the cream with the créme de la créme being Pete

That lendl forehand is a thing of beauty I remember back in the eighties and nineties me having VHS is slowing it down on slow motion copying every backswing how he comes through the ball my forehand was identical 😂

Both players had excellent forehands. However, Lendl was more consistent and very dangerous also on clay, while Sampras had to close the point rapidly. In addition, Sampras strokes, including the forehand, were not explosive on clay.

Lendl absolutely owned the Masters in the 80's. 5 time champion and an incredible 9 consecutive finals from 1980 to 88. In 1989 he lost to Edberg in the semifinal, if he would have won that match he would have made the final for the entire decade of the 80s.

Pensaci 😄

It's interesting, in the year 2024 Edberg's and Federer's racquets are still familiar but Lendl's racquet looks odd and niche. Just looking at its shape though I feel it would hit nicer than the Pro Staff lol.

Lendl, while not the most popular player, was the hardest working of his generation. I remember when he first entered the pro scene. At that time his backhand was suspect and his opponents exploited it as a weakness. He then went on to develop one of the most devastating backhands that won him many tournaments.

89 was a good year for McEnroe but Lendl was a Better player than him. 89 was McEnroe's best year After 1985. Anyway if McEnroe would hired a coach for 1986 and years After he could practice more and improve his game. In 1986/87/88 he took 2/3 month breaks from playing, Probably for his private Life.

Always hated the narrative that Lendl was weak at net. Was he Becker, McEnroe, Edberg great at net? No, of course not. But those guys were ATG level net players. Lendl, especially once he hooked up with Roche became easily an above average net player.
