Sometimes the New Chinese reel pinion does not fit properly with Vintage Jigmaster even with changing the main at same time. There's a lot of slop with the meshing. If you have a vintage Jigmaster (I have 6😂) Use Vintage gears for, the vintage Jigmaster

Jigmasters are great reels. The 505HS was a SUPERB reel, except for one small sometimes significant mostly insignificant detail. Get to that in a sec. The 505 and 505HS had 5:1 gears and BALL BEARINGS. For surf casting, when you need that last 10 yards of distance to get out over that next bar, it's the ball bearings that make the difference, all other things equal. Oh, yeah, and the new model 500 ones are made in China. And the 505HS is no longer made and I might be wrong, but I don't think they ever made a 505HS with an aluminum spool, which is a necessity if you want to mag brake it. The downside to Penn's rank and file man in the street grade reels that have high gear ratios, is that the gears, having much smaller teeth, are not as strong. This is almost a mere theoretical fault, since I have never personally known anyone to have the bull gear (no worries on the pinion, it is stainless, and the bronze bull gear will self destruct long before the pinion gear) disintegrate. Maybe it has happened, maybe not. I am talking from a stress engineering standpoint. The main gear should be a LOT bigger so the teeth are the same modulus as the 3:1 gears. Of course the pinion will have to increase proportionally. If you think this could be a problem, then don't get a Jigmaster, especially a nice vintage 505HS. Otherwise, well, of course the 500 has journal bearings ("bushings") and not ball bearings. With their wide spool, and without all that levelwind frippery, they still cast pretty darn good. Plus they are affordable. Go ahead, make the perfect reel, and then try to sell it for a working man's daily wage. No can dooooooooo! But me, I like my Squidders and even my 209's and 309's and I even have some vintage no.9 reels but the Squidder is my favorite surf reel and I love to go after big bass in tangley water, or big catfish, with a no.9. Now your case of the 100-something pound Ulua, with 50lb test line, there's proof that the Jigmaster in real life isn't TOO delicate, I would say! BUT, that's 4:1 gears, not 5:1.

@growleym5048 күн бұрын
@@HiFishGear Well how bout that. Apparently you are right. I just got one recently and somehow I thought it was not the original spool on it but yeah there is a Penn part number 29L-505 black anodized aluminum spool specifically for the 505HS. Good catch.

Yeah, for a whipping rod, what is the downside to a Walmart rod in the 1.5oz range?
@HiFishGear24 күн бұрын
No downside, often the rods from Walmart have kind of random or old school specs. While they may have a 1.5oz rating they may be not intending for Hawaii style cast and retrieve “whipping”
