It is very refreshing to see and hear this writer speak one on one as it were. I just was in the bookstore yesterday and saw several copies of My Year...and am thinking more now of purchasing.

I dont find her interpretation of the dating scene at the millennium very realistic in rest and relaxation. You would need a time machine I suppose to truly know what it was like but theres just some things that stand out as obvious to me that would not happen.

Resolving the dichotomy between compact and dispersed cities requires a scientific and multidimensional approach. The way forward involves developing a standardized system of urban indicators measuring aspects such as sustainability, quality of life, and efficiency, adapting it to each city's local context. This framework must be complemented by informed citizen participation, flexible planning, transparency in decision-making, and a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnection of urban aspects. This would overcome the current debate, promoting evidence-based urbanism that can balance the advantages of both models according to the specific needs of each city, avoiding simplistic solutions and mitigating the disproportionate influence of particular interests.

Capitalism is based on freedom of power, I.e if you can you do it. The rest is marginal. Capitalism us not even an idealogy. It is more like an observation.

This is a very poor defence of the suburbs that only constructs a strawman of urbanist criticisms. I believe that there is not a consensus among urbanists that suburbs are universally bad and should not exist, nor that every urban area good. None of the common criticisms are even thoughtfully analysed, potential solutions to urban issues are not even acknowledged.

"the simple understandings of them (suburbs) as bad is no longer true" ... "Compact cities certainly might be more sustainable but ecologically are certainly not better" 1) Financially they are terrible because they don't raise enough money to sustain their infrastructure. As infrastructure needs to be replaced they struggle to do so because they don't have the tax base for it. Long distances between buildings and and a focus on using large amount of land for parking means it takes a long time to get anywhere (and makes them harder to service by transit or alternatives to the automobile). 2) Health wise they are terrible because people have to drive everywhere. This leads to people getting fat. It also causes considerable pollution which has a long term effect on people's health as well. 3)There is a vast amount of farmland and habitat that is lost when you build cities outwards. The idea that compact cities aren't ecologically better is ridiculous.

Ehhhh... Firstly the way she categorized city density levels into: European, Asian, American is a little wrong. If you're gonna define and specify density, there are defined metrics for these things. Also, the suburbanization of San Francisco isn't as a result of natural deurbanization in San Francisco; it's a result of poor urbanization in San Francisco. Lastly, the American model of suburbanization as of right now which is heavily dependent on the motor vehicle to transport isn't only anti-human, it's also highly consuming on land resources and incredibly anti-animals. Think about the many animals that die on the side of highways every single day due to motor vehicle accidents, the amount of people we kill every single day due to motor vehicle accidents, etc. Suburbanization is the poison not the solution

This is really weak and speculative thinking. City Nerd is a vastly better resource. I have lived in many US cities and suburbs. And they are rubbish compared to Europe, where, in search of sane urban communities, I have chosen to live.
