Hi Jason, First of all, thank you for the video. I have a question for you. I want to buy a Ricoh GR III from Turkey, but the Street Edition is also available. There is a price difference between the two. Do you think it's worth getting the Street Edition? I have another question as well. Here in Turkey, there are very few people who can repair Ricoh cameras, and I've heard that once they break, they cannot be repaired locally. They said Ricoh doesn't provide warranty or service in Turkey, so broken products are sent to Japan for repair, which takes at least 5 months. Have you ever experienced any problems with your camera? Aside from that, it's a camera I really want to get because I love the photo quality. Thank you for your response.
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 14 күн бұрын
You've basically explained the biggest problem with Ricoh, repair is almost impossible unless you're some old bespecled clock maker! I wouldn't tell anyone NOT to buy this camera if they can afford it (or the cheaper older models), because it's so unique and well worth experiencing, just don't plan on it last several years down the road. I didn't so not a big deal as I move on and upgrade as the years go by. This camera is made for the type of person that can afford to buy it, and understand it could begin to fail with heavy use. This might be five years, maybe never. The more you use, the more the focus wheel on the back will wear out (there are hacks to fix it but eventually it completely goes out), dust on teh sensor (many will swear it's a myth but I've had it and you cannot get rid of it other than photoshop). But again, the advantages of the camera can outweigh those negatives. I had an amazing time with it for a few years, but would not buy it again. I would buy it again for the FIRST time, but not a second one. Fun experience, but I'm not one to stick with the same camera for more than a few years. If it's just a casual user for events and vacation it's great, but for heavy use it's got it woes. Go with the 28mm for street though, I don't care for 40mm.

@@DozierGraphic Jason, thank you for your response; it was really enlightening for me. I shoot with analog cameras, but now I want to focus directly on composition. The camera I actually want to buy is the Leica Q2 Monochrom, but it’s really expensive in this damn country. I’m not someone who makes money from this; I shoot purely as a hobby. The maximum amount I can spend is enough to get the Ricoh GR III. I guess I can have a great time with it for a few years, and if I can build a good portfolio, I’ll get the value out of the money I spent. Thank you again for your explanations.

I just purchased a GRiiix with dust on the sensor. I deducted the sensor and all is well. Taped over microphones openings and added a filter over the lens to prevent additional dust on the sensor in the future. I see what you mean about the cheap ring. No problem now but how long will that continue? Thank you for the GRDigital video. I almost bought one not knowing what I was doing. I don’t think I’d have liked the 1/8” sensor. Trying to get used to the lack of EVF. Man I like those things. May buy a cheap plastic VF from China to help frame my images, especially during bright days. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Hotdam its Potsdam! I've tried it in 35mm from a bulk roll I got an excellent deal on. I really like its punchiness, and nice grain. I'm tempted to try it in 120 because price. BTW- If you have a 120 film that's hard to spool up, unspool to the far end, peel the tape off the backing paper, and fold over onto the film. This will keep that end from curl flexing, and make it easier to spool.

Thanks for the info. I have procrastinated on this for so long. I did use Shutterfly to create my own book which came out great but it's too pricey to use overall. I find the thought of using InDesign daunting. I do have a KDP acct. I do digital photography using my iPhone. I want to do a series in different categories. I just need to get the ball rolling here.

@DozierGraphic

have to use the highest quality paper and premium colour even if black and white because it's not about the colors, its about the quality of the image. Otherwise, you're black and white images will appear like Xerox/photocopies.

yes, you have to either purchase a scanner (these were done on epson v600), or use a digital camera to convert the negative, or send it to a photo lab, which will develop and scan your negatives so you can further edit or post online. Hope that helps!

Can you actually make an income from doing this?
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 29 күн бұрын
That depends on how much income you need, as well as your popularity, marketing, and most importantly, quality. Just putting a book out there will likely not result in any sales without extensive marketing, etc. But people make livings off book publishing all the time. I wouldn't put the effort into it, but I'm sure others have.

Spot on. After 7 years I’m done with Ricoh. The cost of service and cleaning is a joke. Plus poor aftermarket service by a third party monopoly outfit in Europe. I clean the sensor myself but that the rubber gasket between the screen and sensor is disintegrating. Price of repair is the same as I paid for the camera. It was a love affair but it’s over.

I have to echo everything you said. So many people have these stories, but they're yelled down in forums by fanboys. I tried to be objective as a first time user with a new camera, to a couple years using the same camera and how it held up. Just giving my experiences - both good and bad. LOTS of good of course, can't deny that!

I bought a new K70 only a month ago. For the 24 mpx, for the flipping display and the easy menu that is like the one in my old K30 and last for a price of 550 $ with a lens 18/55 missing in my photographic equipment . I make some videos with an old Panasonic videocamera and use my camera only for the use of a camera: to take photographs. And first impressions are really superlative for the cost that is a quarter of a equivalent mirrorless. And with many features that I have never seen in those cameras like Astrotracer or rare like IBIS. For me Pentax is really misunderstood from a lot of people that don't see the real value of things but only the fascinating sirens of Marketing. Bye from Italy
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 29 күн бұрын
The older Pentax line of digital and film cameras are phenomenal. But that was before Ricoh got hold of them and went with high prices but cheap production. They market to high end buyers without regard to durability because they can afford to pay for the inevitable fix, or just discard and move on to their next bright, shiny object (hence the constant boutique versions of the GR, but no advancement in build quality). I would never purchase one of the newer Pentax digital cameras as they are way overpriced and a bit behind in quality (as expected). So enjoy the older models, but don't trust the newer models they're churning out.
