I think knot in stead of loop, for ease of use and precision I also think the tension from the centrifugal force may dislodge the head from the shaft, if you ask to much of it, with "traditional" construction compromising its reliability, its ease of construction, or its power Nice video!!!!

as a preteen 9-12 I became interested in the sling and made several of different lengths and weights [not woven Balaeric style] I quickly discoverd I could throw a baseball weight stone farther and harder than I could pitch [left handed] and with a lot of practice could hit a wooden target the size of a dinner plate at 40-50 yards with a varieity of stones. Not far for an experienced slinger, but for me it was an amazing experience. Great video!!

When I was in Somalia in 1992 the local kids showed us how to make a slings using boot laces. With some practice you could become incredibly accurate with them.

A lot of the energy would be dissipated in the neck. I wonder how many broken necks resulted

These things are bad ass, I want to get one and practice with it. I can imagine that there was no sound in ancient warfare that inspired fear more than the supersonic crack of a balearic sling! 😅 I did some math on this once, and a good slinger with a one ounce lead projectile was delivering similar kinetic energy to a 9 mm bullet... absolutely brutal weapon, and very underaprecated in modern society.

I always laugh when I see the modern depiction of David vs. Goliath. A child didn't kill a giant with a toy, a young man brought a pistol to a knife fight.

Impressive. I was thinking as to how I would arrange my throwers when using slings and I'm thinking in lines and spaced to operate, get in close and throw then get down and allow the row behind to sling. I guess range would be best at 10m and out of range of all but archers who you would not want to confront.

I like how you mentioned that Romans preferred heavier stones as anti-armor. While a stone 1/4 the mass and traveling twice as fast as a heavier stone will have similar kinetic energy, that energy is dependent on a direct hit (nice direct hit on that face, err melon). Any deflection can result in the projectile glancing off and keeping some of its kinetic energy as it continues to travel. Your practical experiments have been fantastic, thanks!

A couple other things to consider The Romans were smart enough to know how high ground effective the range of weaponry. So imagine what they would do with a bunch of slingers using heavy ammo to increase their range, and or simply firing down upon their enemies to give their shots constant acceleration rather than trying to launch them up at a parabolic Arc Secondly, and I only just considered this based on some of your wording... Imagine the chaos the ricochet must have caused. Unlike a javelin hat might Pierce armor and stay in place, or a discus that would shatter on impact, a slinger's Stone had a high probability to simply keep going after the initial strike.A glancing blow that could crush one man's skull might still ricochet and wound another depending on how tight the formation of the enemy was... Now multiply that by 50 or 100 or more... Per volley...

The stone cast at 3:43 hit the target in the groin! He shot it right into the targets balls! I'm pretty sure that any armor of the period wouldn't have helped much either.
