Not a great practice in my experience. Anonymous feedback has the potential to LOWER safety. If the need for anonymous feedback exists then that indicates trust may be low and opens the door for unconstructive (offensive) feedback. It also assumes we understand the person giving the feedback just by reading their statement when usually you have to dig a bit deeper with a bi-directional conversation. That leads to assumptions about what the author meant and frustration when team members inevitably interpret with their own bias and no room to clarify. That is, unless the author reveals themselves. It's better to focus on trust and allow people to take sensitive feedback offline with team members they DO trust allowing for natural filtration of potentially concerning comments. Anonymous reporting for employees on the other hand is important. This is less to do with improving development capabilities and more to do with addressing serious concerns like abuse and harassment.

I'm 40 seconds into this 2 minute 40 second update and haven't heard any content yet :P I'm poking fun, mostly, but it is kind of ironic that you spend the first 20% of the runtime of a video redoing your last video on a topic about how important the first moments of a piece of communication are not talking about the actual topic.

Tequinque in your slides might be a misspelling of "technique", might want to spell check it. When I first saw it I wondered if it was another language, like you were being fancy or speaking to an international audience.

I usually hide the card author and hide all card to avoid anchoring bias effect, then after team have posted all card I will point out the owner of most voted card to explain it is it okey?
@RetriumHQ
@RetriumHQ 2 жыл бұрын
Each team is different. I prefer to keep authors anonymous even after the cards have been shared to maintain that psychological safety. If a team member knows I am going to eventually ask them to identify, they may not even put a controversial or difficult card up at the start. If there is any confusion over a card's meaning, I ask the group, "are we working off the idea that this card means this or that." If the author wants to self-identify, great. If not, we can collectively decide how we want to define the note. l admit that it can take a few more seconds, but I think it is worth it if it means getting more honest feedback. Only your team can decide if it is worth it to them.

Great tip, thanks for sharing! Interesting to hear you say at the end that "the retro is not just product oriented, but also process oriented". In my experience, I see the opposite problem! Most people I see tend to focus the retro on internal process topics, on how to get the team to work better together and ignore the product all together (they are thinking, that's the PO or business people to think about - it's not my job)... if I were to make a video on retrospective, I would probably use a similar sentence but in reverse ;-)
@RetriumHQ
@RetriumHQ 4 жыл бұрын
That is a great insight! Especially as more industries outside of development start to implement agile thinking, it is important to focus on the retrospective as a tool on multiple levels.
@TheAgileBroadcast
@TheAgileBroadcast 4 жыл бұрын
@@RetriumHQ Yes. Even withing the software development world though. For a product company, it might be more natural to focus on the product, but for a services company where work is project-based, the "product" sadly becomes someone else's problem (the client). Different context, different battles I guess ;-)

Great Question! Anonymity is important in retrospectives because it helps establish trust and feelings of psychological safety. During the private brainstorming phase, you’ll only be able to see the content of your notes. This is to reduce groupthink and maintain anonymity so everyone feels comfortable being honest. Once you move on to the Group phase everyone will then be able to see all of the cards without knowing who created which cards.

I tried the retrospective where you ask team members to write down a character form the movies that represents how they feel right now. Only I added a twist to this, how do you feel right now about this sprint. After 5 minutes or so, I collected all of the sticky notes in a container and pulled each sticky note from the container, one- by- one and read the movie character to the team. I then asked the rest of the team to guess which team member wrote this sticky note. Once the team member who wrote the note was identified, I asked that team member to explain why they felt that way about the sprint that just completed. I soon had a collection of comments about the sprint from which I summarized all of the movie characters, team members and comments into a sprint review document. Thanks for you help
