I was born 9 years after WWII. By the time I was 4, I could understand what I heard from my mother -- tales of terror that the J haps had brought to her locality. Juez de cuchillo was the most terrifying -- throwing babies up the air and catching them with bayonets. Random J hap's shelling of rural areas created craters that a carabao could wallow in when rains filled them with water. So, local folks evacuated to dense swamps where J haps dared not tread, scared of mud... yet not bothered by conscience, if they have any. My mother's generation has faded, so have the tales. Memories are short. After my generation, those tales can only be told on YT.

My father was in the Philippines during WW2. When I came home with wife and kids my Father stared at my wife and tears started witch he fought off. I think the whole family of about 20 that were there noticed. When My eldest yelled grandpa. Then ran and jumped and wrapped her legs around his waist. He no longer could fight of the tears. Dad was a tuff Irishman and I only saw him cry twice. First time was when our mother died and second when I brought my wife and Children home. I was gone 8 years that time and only came home because the volcano Pinatubo blew it's top back in June of 1991 and we only lived about 60 mile from it. And thought we can always return if we wish to. Some of us thought he must have been thinking of a lost Filipina love when he saw my wife. However he kept his private life private. I have been married 40 plus years now and we are both old and gray plus know what the other is thinking most of the time. Ingat!
