Being American I don’t understand this. We have rest areas and pull offs, free to use I’ve seen lot of vaners there. We have primitive camping too, outhouses and water cost is $7 over looks a lake. You can also camp on State Land too. And then there’s Boondocking, private land owners let you stay. Why is the UK so strict on vaners ? And the car parks with trails where people walk or take their dogs, need trash can, water and bathrooms. What are people doing with dog bag, probably not picking it up or just leaving it. 🇺🇸
@Roadshome
@Roadshome 13 сағат бұрын
Think we need to visit America. Some irresponsible dog owning pick their dogs poo up but then decide to leave the bagged poo, sometimes throw into hedges. We believe the reason these stopping places are being list is people we are being forced into housing. Then if we are forced into houses , people will need to work to pay rent and live.

@@Roadshome dog trash is the fault of the car parks, my opinion trash and water is needed. Even our day parks have trash cans, bathrooms and water and dog water too. You guys would probably like Michigan, Mackinaw Bridge will take you to the Up. I’m in Southern Michigan the Bridge is about 5 hour drive or so. But there is a toll for the bridge, the bridge is about 5 miles long, on high wind days no one crosses. I haven’t been to the bridge in 20 years, since having horses 🐴 lol. I am not full time but part time in my van but I truly do not understand much of your position at all. I don’t condone you staying nor do i criticise it, but I am critical how some van lifers feel they should be entitled to stay in certain places. None of this is hard to understand! Like all things in life, these sites get abused. Not by you. You and so many others abide by the laws of decency and common sense. But others do not. The problem is you turn up for one night and think all is good. The next night 10 vans turn up! Now we have a different story. Most signs banning overnight parking are not enforceable or legal. But that’s not the point. The point is the signs typically go up because the areas get abused or over used. Not because there is some great conspiracy to spoil life for people living in a van! It’s just the same rubbish time and time over….people abuse the sites. They don’t stay for one night they stay for 10. The chairs come out and it’s treated like a camp site. And it goes on. I love park4night but also recognise it destroys these sites! Because nothing in the app gives any indication of frequency of use. When I first started travelling in a van I paid little thought to how many other vans were there. But quickly I realised that was the problem. I have seen site after site disappear as signs go up and the truth is I know why - they were abused. The locals start complaining and suddenly the signs go up. Successful van life in my opinion is finding sites yourself that are NOT on apps because the sites are less likely to see over use. The truth is, it’s a small number of idiots that spoil it for the rest of us. Unless you are checking a site 365 days of the year, there are typically 364 days that you don’t see what happens at a site and alas, those days attract idiots and eventually the inevitable happens….the signs go up! Without specifying a location, I found a great spot and each time I went there I was the only van there. It wasn’t on park4night. Then one day I discovered someone had listed it. Each time I stayed - infrequently and only one night at a time, there were multiple vans there. Every single time. Guess what? Yup….the signs went up and eventually it was listed as daytime only on park4night.

Totally agree with what you've said. We tend to stay away from the over populated areas, there are certain places where vanlifers congregate and stay for numbers of weeks. Like you say this is bound to upset people. They will lose the freedom to park in these such places.

I did not get too much bother in those days so it will be interesting to follow your journey and see how things have changed! One other tip, if it comes to the point where a vehicle is brought in to tow you off, if you are in your vehicle I believe they cannot tow you or lift the van. I found this Interesting giving the basics that a change would make, for those trying to decide on their daily hum drum routine and costs. I did part time van life for 2 years, to see if it was worth the transition for a better life. I enjoyed it mostly but it had its pitfalls too. Running costs were more than I expected, mainly due to breaking down and repair bills which happened a bit too often. Leisure batteries needed replacing and they couldn't keep the diesel heater going when it was really cold. On the other end, belting hot days became unbearable with insufficient cooling and cooking made it worse. Finally the disposal of crap from the toilet. Having to find a place that you could do that, the good old expensive campsite but that said, I made sure that I got my moneys worth by filling up with water and a hookup to recharge. Life was not too bad living in a flat apart from the bills and neighbours never bothered me. That's my take on it but everything is changing for everyone at lightning speed now, so maybe a rethink if the developing events become a crisis.
