Have you ever used flotrole? By Flood? It’s a paint additive that help smooth things out but I think the issue is with the pre-primed boards??? Maybe it had some oily substance on it? Great perseverance though- you deserve the gold medals

Stacy, what program do you use for the outline drawings?
@StudioStacy6 күн бұрын
I just sketch/trace the leaves from the gelli plate prints. Then I scan them into the computer. I don't actually draw them on the computer. I have a program called Artisan, which I used to use for digital scrapbooking way back in the day. I use this program to arrange them, but I think you could use a less robust program. Or just arrange them how you want them and retrace them. Hope all of this makes sense. Feel free to reach back out if it doesn't. And as always thanks for following along. 😍

Heated to what temperature?
@StudioStacy7 күн бұрын
Are you asking for the griddle temperatures? If so I heat my pancake griddle (the one with the tin of white paint on it to 150. I have a surface thermometer on it too make sure it does not go above 175. The griddle with the encaustic medium is turned between 150 and 200 depending on how hot it is in the studio. I have a candy thermometer in it to again just keep an eye on the temperature of the encaustic wax. As a good rule of thumb you want the wax between 150 and 175. I have found electric griddles to not be accurate/exact so that is why I use thermometers. Hope this helps.

I forgot to film that part - you didn't miss it 🙄 I took the scanned leaf sketches and then printed out the reverse image onto vellum and rubbed the image/vellum onto the encaustic painting. But you could definitely just rub the graphite image onto the painting. If you want take a look at this quick video where I show the vellum transfer. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdeBo8x33tbZpKc.html

@@C0raBr0wn Let me let you in on a little secret I just figured out because my toner printer just started acting up. The vellum that I use works with inkjet printers too! It's not as easy to transfer the ink and its not as crisp/clean if that makes sense. It does work though. I'm planning on an upcoming video to show this but it's probably a few weeks out. So in the meantime try it out and see what you think. 😍

This was really interesting. I have had luck with basic mulberry with the inkjet but the fibers of the paper will come through. It's just easy to use since it can go right through the printer. What I like is how it just melts into the wax. I also tear my edges when I embed and don't cut them. It helps them really melt in better. Thank you for a great tutorial.

@@StudioStacy I have so many questions. I've taken a few classes, took the plunge and bought enough supplies to do this at home. My wax tends to be lumpy when I fuse and I do pre-heat the boards but maybe not enough. I used a heat gun right now. I also have had issues where I think I over heat and blow right through the wax and can see the board. I'm moving the heat gun and hold it about 3" above the board. I just need to learn the basics better.
@StudioStacy28 күн бұрын
@@AliDrew Yes keep practicing. Encaustic has a learning curve to it, but once you get it the skies the limit. I have personally found that I have better control with a torch. The torch allows me to turn the flame to a very low flame or a very high flame with a more concentrated tip. Hope that makes sense. I use the BernzOmatic TS3500T and there is a hose kit model number WH0159. The hose kit is great because there is no weight from the propane. Try heating the boards more. If the wax isn't gliding off your brush it might be because the board is too cool. Also try working in a very small section until you get the hang of it. I'm assuming you are using a hake brush. If you are using a different brush try switching to a hake. Feel free to reach out with any questions. I'm happy to try and help.

You are saying hardboard and it is kind of hard to tell, but it looks like you are actually using masonite. Can you conirm what you are using and how successful it is for the long run? Wouldn't it be in your favor to gesso after complete to prevent the drying gesso from pulling waves on your board? Also for your help, the word casein is pronounced (caseen )
@StudioStacy2 ай бұрын
The hardware/lumber store where I get the board at has it labeled as hardboard. I'm not sure what you are asking about the gesso? I have recently switched back to encuastic gesso (instead of the casein), prepping with gesso before applying the encaustic paint or medium. The paintings have held up very nicely and I have never had any complaints from any of my collectors. Hope this helps.
