At my son's game, they called a balk as the pitcher pitched the ball. The batter put the ball in play, which resulted in a force out but gave the batting team the choice of the result of the play or the balk.
@Rowgue51
@Rowgue51 Жыл бұрын
While the mechanics of how the call was made are clearly not ideal, it's ultimately irrelevant. If it was a balk then it should have been called and regardless of the way it was handled the proper outcome of the play would have been reached. Of course we can't see if it was actually a balk because the video only picks up after the balk would have already occurred.

Do you think you should add a few more copies of the called-back home run? I've only seen three or four so far.

Doesn’t matter that the kid was a senior and had never hit a home run, but the ump should make a balk call at the pitch, not minutes later.

Baseball? I was a high school Basketball Ref we had to make calls in split seconds not a minute or two after the fact and after conferring with other refs and or coaches. Most of my conferences with coaches were solved usually within one sentence if a conference with a coach or player took too long it might end up being a technical foul. I didn’t call very many technical fouls but most of the ones I called were because of too much “discussion” about the call from a player or coach.

Not a balk. He wasn’t calling anything. Until that hall left the park. Absolutely terrible! Should never umpire any where again. Looked like he had money in this game. And the poor kid that hit it out.

I’m not seeing a balk in this video. All I see is a pitch that ended in a home run. This video seems to me that a disgruntled parent didn’t like the outcome of the game.

Deceptive Video! Video cut to obscure Balk assessment. While a delayed call by BU may be due to inexperience, he did confer with the PU. Regardless of the delay, get the call right. In NFHS, the ball is dead immediately, even if the call came afterwards.
@johntretola6656

the ball is not dead with a balk (which I don' think it was anyway). The batting time can choose to not enforce the balk.

Why haven't you shown the full pitching motion? Did the pitcher balk? If so, then your issue isn't with the call at all, it's with the timing of the call.

I am just reading about this for the first time, and I thank you with all my heart for doing what you do. I am a very big animal advocate, and I volunteer at animal care and control. I rescue senior German Shepherd Dogs that been thrown away by their owners Who don’t want to spend $20 on medicine for arthritis. I understand animals that are not wanted anymore and it breaks my heart. I don’t live in a place where I can have a horse even though I have a fenced acre, but not zoned to have a horse. I bless you for what you’re doing. It’s so wonderful.

If the umpire was calling a balk, why on earth did he turn to watch the ball go out of the park first? After that, he has a conference with the pitcher, and after that, finally confers with his partner. The fact that no one sees anything wrong with this speaks volumes. Sports has become corrupt from top to bottom. A sad reality.

Nothing "corrupt" about it, field umpire didn't know what he was doing. The plate umpire should have over-ruled him and ended the mess.

The video does not show the entire pitch, so it's impossible to know if it is a balk or not, and quite possible the audio might have picked up the umpire saying, "That's a balk". Granted, as an umpire I do it MUCH louder and with hands waiving high, since in high school rules (National Federation of High School, or NFHS), it's an immediate dead ball and I know I would be waiving it off and calling time immediately. As others have pointed out, in Official Baseball Rules (OBR which MLB plays but surprisingly many youth leagues adopt as well), it's a delayed call, meaning that you wait until the outcome of the play is over and take the play that benefits the offense.

Believe me, there was no indication verbal or otherwise of a balk until after the ball was out of the park. So, either way, taking away the homer was the wrong. My guess? The ump was related to the pitcher or someone on the team in the field. Or he was just a bonehead. Lots of umps fall into both of those categories.
@jonbiedermann79
@jonbiedermann79 Жыл бұрын
@@newsmatt1 Appreciate the response! It is possible, yet incredibly unlikely, IMO that the umpire in question was related to the team he was trying to help. I only say this that in all of my games (as a player, coach (16+ years) and now Umpire (10+ years), I have been part of more than 2,000+ games. I will admit that in *ONE* game (2011?), there was a single umpire that either intentionally squeezed my 9u team or had really bad eyesight, lol. And oh yeah, he was the PE teacher for half of the other team, which did make it a little suspicious. However- knowing statistical variance (I'm a computer geek on the side), and also realizing that as an umpire I barely know what inning it is, let alone the score, I give the benefit of the doubt to the umpire. (Note: the league was Suburban Travel (Outside of Philly), the team we were playing was Deep Run. Since then, I umpire for Deep Run and have great respect for their program, so again, I think it might just be a weird anomaly). TY for responding, I'm looking to get out on the field in just 2 months with the best seat in the house!

Both of my Thoroughbreds were racers. I had my first baby when I was 4 yrs old. I got my second baby when I was 10 yrs. old. After I stopped showing, they retired and became our pets. Both of my horses helped bring up my kids. I had my babies until they were both 40's and went to heaven. They were more than just my horses, they were part of my heart and soul.

1) The video editing is subject to assume manipulation. 2) under 2022 rules for NFHS, a balk is a dead ball so the home run doesn't count. Umpires can call a balk late. That is specifically taught in umpire training. "Just because you saw it and didn't call it immediately doesn't mean it's not a balk. Call it when you see it, but late if you have to." Rules at the time of upload might have been different?

As soon as the ump sees a balk, he calls balk, time is called, and the runners advance. The ump never gives a signal or anything, bad officiating and mechanics by the base ump.

this is just poor umpiring and lack of security/certainty in call. Yes, in NHFS a ball is DEAD on a balk, whereas MLB the homerun would override the dealyed dead ball balk call. Base ump had all tag responsibilities after HR so he never saw batter-runner touch second or third while he was talking to pitcher. Why does an umpire need to confirm with a pitcher about his non-call? Even if it was a balk, it was a non-call, let it stand as human error. No one was asking for the call, so if no one saw it but him (including his partner), move on and do not insert yourself into game!

It's the one nasty, dark story that the Thoroughbred Industry never wants to talk about is the number of Thoroughbreds that are sent to slaughter. Of all the greedy breeders who breed hundreds of foals but only keep a small handful for their own racing. So what happens with all those unwanted now yearlings? Off to their first auction. But what if they aren't sold there? It's never revealed where all those yearlings go. All breeders should be capped at a certain number of foals that they can breed to help get the numbers of unwanted Thoroughbreds down. Breaks my heart.
