I am Franco-British guy whose family on the father side migrated to England from Ireland in the late 19th century, my grandfather was pretty tall for his time period although rather lanky (well, he was pretty lanky by the time I knew him and he was in his 80s). An indirect ancestor of mine (the brother of my direct ancestor) was even involved in the Crimean War. So I'd say that there is a possibility that one of my ancestors may have been a Gallowglass at some point but I can't be 100% sure.

Great clip. Just to point out that the photo used at 12m12s is not Arklow but Wicklow town. Also, Wicklow town sits on the estuary of the River Leitrim. The Vartry River (not Vantry) ends its journey at Broadlough close to Knockrobin near Rathnew. The river that flows the short distance from Broadlough to the Irish Sea is the River Leitrim, hence the name of the street, Leitrim Place in Wicklow that is built abreast the riverbank. Great clip. Keep them coming!

The name 'Wicklow' was overlooked in this clip. Ireland's youngest county (1606) is named after its county town, Wicklow which was named by Danish Vikings that settled on the existing Irish settlement of Inbhearr Dí (Inverdee) / Kilmantin (Cill Mhantáin) in the 10th century. They named it 'Vyknigelo' / meadow of the Viking which, in time became Wicklow.

I'm not claiming to be correct, but i heard a different version of how Athlone got its name Apparently Áth Luain means Ford of the Loins, as in the Táin Bó Cuailgne when the two bulls, the Donn Cuailnge and the Finn Bheanach fight, the Donn Cuailnge kills the other bull and its loins spill into the ford, and luan does indeed translate to loin Fantastic video by the way

Thank you. This helped me a lot in my research on the kingdoms of Ireland. I have been making videos on Irish landmarks and there is no way to show them without going into the amazing history behind each one. All that history is interconnected and each day I learn a tiny bit more of the very rich history Ireland has had for the last 10000 years.

I used to work in the Land Registry in Chancery Street. Some of the older maps were still singed from the fire. It was also taken as a given that any document from before the 1920s was lost. It truly was a disaster.

My family spelled it both McLean and McLain , i know that they lived in both Scotland and Ireland , so either they were Gallowglass and were awarded lands in Ireland or they were part of the Ulster Plantations , I'm not sure

MacLean started under Gillean na teague. It means sons of Gillean. Originally granted the isle of mull, Scotland, after the battle of largs. I am also MacLean. And many galloglaigh set up shop in Ireland, to look for new recruits. Perhaps that is where your family split off. But there is also the McClains which come from the southern part of the isle of mull. And I have heard there was a time when Scots were sent to Ulster during the highland clearance. I'm half awake right now so I'm rambling and probably don't make much sense. But you should read into the history of our clan. There are more videos here on KZfaq about clan MacLean, and plenty of websites that have detailed records. Alba guh brath.

The clan name is O'Neill but during the great 19th century migration to America on arrival the name often became incorrectly recorded as O'Neal. The O'Neills were native Irish and they employed Gallowglass warriors from the western isles of Scotland to help them in their wars against other clans and the English...
