We need him to say it again in schools and colleges. To many older people tell the young that it's harder for them so they give up before they have started, or worse spend their life playing the blame game. No one says it's easy but you have to put in the work, it's not going to be handed to you on a plate. This Man is an inspiration.

Best advert I've heard in many a year, for working, striving for and EARNING what you get. NOT for wanting everything in life to just be handed to you, or for wanting everybody to be given the same, even if they've no ambition, no drive and haven't earned it.

In Scotland, we like to shit on ourselves. Anyone who talks about achievements that they're proud of is frowned upon. I'm am artist, musician, actor and writer. The majority of the people I know have tried to discourage me at some point. Either they poo-poo it right away, or they seem supportive at first and then they're like, "you know, actually, maybe you should get a real job". It IS a real job. And then you say, "well what about so-and-so on the telly? Is that not a real job?" and they go, "oh but that's different". How the fuck do you think anyone else did it? They all started in the same position.

"I hope I get it...!" Was not so much a wish for the future, (who the bloody hell in their right mind, is going to WISH for dementia and be serious about that wish!!!!!!???????) as it was a SEGUE INTO A COMEDY ROUTINE HE WAS ABOUT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember my first summer job as a school boy in the late 60's. I worked in a small scrapyard in the centre of Leicester, long since gone and built upon. The guy who owned this highly lucrative business drove a white Rolls Royce and we all ate a hearty Cooke lunch, cooked on site every day at his expense. One day he called me into his cramped office and asked me to write out a cheque for him. He told me that he couldn't read and write but he knew I could because I was at school. He saw the look on my face and he said, 'son, you don't have to be educated to be smart'. You can do and be anything you want in this life, you just have to work hard and believe in yourself'. Wise words spoken to me by Mr Albert Healey, scrap dealer and mentor extrordinare.

Touching that they found a place for you, a job, and valued you. Also, that they did well in spite of no literacy. But, do you not wonder how they did so well? Nothing is quite what it's meant to be for in this society. Why?

Billy's absolutely right. I know from my own personal experience having grown up in a single parent poor family in the 1950s in a council estate in south London and leaving school at 15 with no educational qualifications whatsoever. I'd played truant for a month and missed my 11-plus exam. A week before I left school in December 1962 I got a job on a small newspaper in Fleet Street as an office boy/messenger for £4 a week. My headmaster then offered me a sixth form place in a London college. I turned it down because my mother couldn't afford the school uniform. And I'd always dreamed of being a journalist and had read everything I could find in my library on becoming a professional writer. My headmaster told me I'd never be a journalist because when asked I couldn't spell chrysanthemum! It was like his waving a red flag at a bull and it made me even more determined. Within 3 months I was the youngest reporter in London's world famous Street of Ink. And I've since written for over 100 newspapers and magazines around the world, among many other things I never thought I'd achieve. So, whoever you are...choose your goal and always aim high. Borrow ideas and learn from the best. Don't be afraid to do what you really really want. Never give up. Believe in yourself when everyone else doubts you. Keep working at it. Practise practise practise. If life knocks you down, keep getting up. This applies to everything you do. It worked for me. ❤ ps Read Leaf by Niggle by JRR Tolkien. 😎 I believe in you. It's your life. Don't waste it.

Glorious stuff, old chap. I survived horrific violence from my parents growing up, couldn't concentrate on a single lesson, vile schoolteachers, but I'm running for the Senate in my country, I want the world to know that you can come from a background of utter horror but aim impossibly high (or low, if you're trying to get into government). I've never been at the top of anything, I've never had anyone believe in me, but I'm just going to keep hammering away until I succeed or die or something. It's the most endless slog imaginable, but I just refuse to give up. Best wishes all, Cheerio! 😃
