Could we have some details please. Date of the match, the opposition, was it a friendly ?, a testimonial ?. Brady played in a 1990 world cup qualifying match against Hungary. He retired during that campaign but then declared himself eligible again for the finals but Jack Charlton wouldn’t pick him. So Brady missed both Euro 1988 and Italia 90. Charlton was stubborn and didn’t trust skillful players. He wanted a team to kick from back to front and run around charging in to everything. He was the the worst thing that ever happened Irish football but everyone is afraid to say it. Of course the non-football public adored him, they had great craic but the proper football people hated his style. He massively under-achieved with the players at his disposal. However he filled the coffers of the FAI and they loved him for that. We still have not recovered from his tenure and we probably never will.

Back when soccer was a good game. 2 real men not like the robot's that play today.
Jack was wrong there. Niall was not a target men for crosses to be headed, he was much more than that as we can see from his top 10 sunderland goals. Jack’s method of play was one-dimensional. He distroyed Irish football for generations and we have seen that happen recently. Ireland were not “successful” in the 80s and 90s because of Jack, They were “successfull” because they had good quality players. How much more could they have achieved if they had a proper manager we will never know. The Irish public (which largely were used to watching GAA and Rugby thought Big Jack’s methods were the only way and I’m afraid that philosophy still pervades amongst a sizeable populace. Sadly we no longer have the players playing at the top level so no matter who is charge we will not qualify for major tournaments. Because of a corrupt FAI none of the revenue from the “Glory Days” was used to improve the League Of Ireland and we are still relying largely on England to improve and\or produce players of International ability. Of course the competition now is so much greater with Irish players having to compete with peers from all over the world. Jack had the luxury of the likes of Liam Brady,Ronnie Whelan,Paul McGrath, Dennis Irwin, Niall Quinn, Frank Stapleton, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge, Steve Staunton, Gary Kelly, Ian Harte, Mick McCarthy, Roy Keane, John Sheridan, Kevin Moran, Andy Townsend , Kevin Sheedy and others too who were all playing at the top level yet Jack didn’t trust them and had them all playing hoofball. We scored 2 goals at Italia 90 and didn’t win a game in normal or extra time yet the country went wild and Jack was almost canonised. That tells you all you need to know.
