I put an outer tie rod on an old 1991 K1500 Chevrolet reg cab long bed with 169k miles and no alignment. Drove the truck 289k until an accident took it out for good. My secret? I used my 12 in calipers to measure from the center of the grease fitting to the outer edge of the sleeve. Screwed them in there the exact amount and truck drove flawless.

Looks like an egr valve. Exhaust has recirculation valve. That's my 2 cents, but without knowing which whip it was working with i wouldn't know for show.

I had three four wheel alignments done and I was still buying new tires every 6 months on my brand new car. I bought the last set of four tires and paid for the "We will do alignment as long as you own the car" and it finally stopped eating tires.

It's not that they don't want the alignment, it's most likely they just can't afford it. Most people live paycheck to paycheck and even though they need work done on their car, they still have rent to pay and have children to feed and lights to keep on. This customer probably spent every last penny he had on the tie rod replacement and just doesn't have the $100 or so for the alignment. A lot of mechanics make fun of customers for this but it's the garages they work for that are charging them outrageous fees for simple repairs. The mechanics don't care because they are getting paid money the customer can only dream about. The customer probably makes less than $20 an hour at their job while they are being charged between $60 - $80 per hour plus the cost of the parts on top of that. Even if the job only takes them 5 minutes, most places will still charge you for an hour. The customer has to bust their ass at work for a whole shift just to pay for that 5 or 10 minute job. This is why people refuse service. They simply just don't have the money to pay for it. I know people who have been forced to junk vehicles before simply because they couldn't afford to pay for the repairs. They could afford the part no problem, but lacked the knowledge and tools to do it themselves and paying the multiple hour labor fee was just not an option. Just about a month ago I help a friend replace his alternator. The garage wanted to charge him $250 for labor and another $250 for a new alternator. They said it was a 4 hour job because they had to take off a bunch of stuff and then put it all back on. The guy makes $12 an hour. Obviously he can't afford that as it would be his entire paycheck. He was ready to junk his car and say screw it. I went and found him an alternator for about $80 and showed him how to replace it. His alternator was easier to access by going underneath. We still had to remove a few things but it didn't take no 4 hours. In about 30 minutes he was back on the road and still had money in his wallet. Charge a man for fixing his car and he might walk away. Teach a man how to do it himself and he'll drive away.
