imo the benefit of a crossbow is that it's easier, but the bow is more effective in terms of acquisition, maintenence, speed, and versatility. If you're using a crossbow you better make sure your first shot does the job. You probably won't get a follow up shot with a bow either (if youre hunting) but you're definitely not getting one with a crossbow. Also if I'm taking something into the woods, I want it to have the absolute minimum amount of moving parts, tight gaps, or anything else that could get gunk in it and jam up or something. In all my years of hunting the only thing that has never failed on me in some way has been a recurve bow.
