Cute girls doing cute things was basically pioneered by Azumanga Daioh, but what really turned the slice of life genre on its' head was the last episode? Why? Because it is the last episode. The girls graduate. For them, high school ends. The show ends on a shocking change in the life of these adolescents. Every story, every problem and every challenge the characters faced was deliberately, comically trivial. How in the world does a series take triviality and comedy and punch you in the emotional gut? End it. End it unambiguously, assure that these relationships are over, their world is going to change, and all that are left are their memories. Memories of a simpler time. Life can be trivial. Change is never trivial, it's important and it is thrilling, painful and inevitable. That's what really defined slice of life and CGDCT anime. By making the show about life, and making the last episode about life changing Azumanga Daioh set the standard and made a distinction between series that wanted to show comfortable living staying the same and that comfort ending when things change.
