Interesting interview. I'm looking forward to the last part of the trilogy too. Yes, characters are all dead now. And I wonder what will happen in new single. I wonder if there were many drunk Finns at that show or not. :-D No, concerts in Finland must be great. I wished go to the Rock Castle here in the Czech Republic this year to see Elvenking. But now it looks like I can't go there in the end. I will see. So I'm glad Elvenking has plans for next year. I hope for more concerts. :-)

If the subtitles don't work, here the text: Hi Marika, welcome to Metal Pizza, how are you? Hi everyone, thanks, I'm fine and you? I'm fine thanks. And thanks for inviting me. You are welcome. I finished working on the photos I took in Tuska the other week, I put them online, so it's been a very busy week, as they say. Okay, okay. Sometimes I can't even think of words in Italian. Messed up, a messed-up week, that's it. Perfect, perfect, it's a special period for me too, I thought that with the start of summer everything would calm down, but absolutely not. Never a joy, oh well. This doesn't mean that there aren't beautiful things, on the contrary, sometimes if there are many beautiful things there isn't time to relax. It's true, very true, very true.

So, let's talk a little about you. You are a singer and are skilled at singing in different styles. When did you start singing? Then, if I have to say the very beginning, I was three years old. Yes, it's something, I was really little and they realized in nursery school that I was predisposed. So there was a competition, let's say there were the selections for the zecchino d'oro, which is a very famous competition here in Italy for children, and so they let me participate. And I still have the videos, I was so little I couldn't speak. In reality the video is very sweet, because they ask me “what your name is?”, so I couldn't even speak because I was young. And that's how it started. Then in reality I was lucky because my parents always left me free. And that means they didn't even pressure me. So when I approached singing again, I still did it with awareness, I did it because I wanted to. So I started from such a young age, then I always sang, I always had the passion, I also took some courses in high school, etc., etc. Until then, when I started studying musicology in Bologna, therefore at university, I decided to take the Music Branch. Then, let's say in parallel, I started seriously studying singing and piano, with the course, with school, etc., etc. I say in parallel because it's true that I went to university for music, but the university is for music theory. So there was no practice, it's not the conservatory, musicology is something else. And so nothing, then from here, one thing led to another, and here I am.

And do you currently teach? Yes. Approximately how many students do you have? So, as I was telling you, it's been a year, it's a busy period. As of today I'm at about 50 hours a week, so that's 50 students each week. In recent years there are truly hundreds, I say this with great pride, I am very happy. Then, even when the kids go their own way, they always remain students for me, so some continue to send me messages, they send me, maybe in the meantime they have made some albums, some things, I'm very happy, so I still give advice. So yes, but today we are around fifty people. Ok, so 50 hours a week is demanding, because basically, if we take for example a person who does a random job, whatever, 40 hours a week are more or less the hours of work. So you do extra. Yes, exactly, exactly that. Then it's clear that I'm talking to you about 50 hours, then there's always maybe the one who is absent, the one who gets sick, but in terms of number of people there are around fifty, so more or less remove those 5 people per week, so yes, I go out of my way. Then considering YouT

Then considering KZfaq and the rest, I push myself a lot. Are they all in-person lessons, or are there also lessons you do over the internet? A little and a little, a little and a little. I work in a rock academy, a very cool place here in Bologna, which is called FM, which is closely linked to Alchemica which is a place on a national level which however has its own name, and therefore from there I make a greater presence, even if I still have some online there, and then the rest are mostly online students. So I'm also lucky enough to have students from all over Italy, yes. Do you have any foreign students too? So, let me think, we're starting in September. We start in September because I have already had contacts in Germany, specifically, and we start in September. OK well.

So yes. So it also reaches an international level. So, let's talk about your group, the Red Masquerade. Your first album was released in 2018, The 7th Room. What can you say about that album? What are the topics covered? So, on a textual level we built that album a bit like a concept album, so it basically refers to Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of the Red Death. The Masque of the Red Death has seven rooms in the story, I won't spoil anything for you, read it, because it's short but beautiful, so it's really worth it. However, inside the castle where the situation, the story, takes place, there are seven rooms. We took these seven rooms and associated each one with a color, but we also associated a capital sin with each one, but in reality it is more traced back to something that is leading humanity to degradation. There are various themes inside, so we start from, as I can tell you, greed to even more things such as exploitation of prostitution, that is, we are talking about quite serious topics and we have tried to link each topic to a room. We talk about war, we talk about depression, in short, every song has its own meaning. However, there are nine songs, one is dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe and the other is dedicated to the mask of Red Death, which is also the single Les Masques, in French, like this. And now what are you currently doing? Because I saw that you did your last concert at the Alchemica in March, if I remember correctly. Yes, opening for Frozen Crown. What are you doing right now? Are you working on new music? Exactly, we are finalizing the composition of the new album. In fact, look, just yesterday we had a meeting where we took stock of the situation, so we are really finishing writing the tracks and we hope to start with the new school year, so from September onwards, really to the recordings. It will be a very different album, we are trying to change genre to the point that we even thought about changing the name, but we're not changing the name, but we really want to change, change the style, almost completely. Because let's say that Les Masques were born with a big symphonic imprint that made sense when it was born, that is, the artist evolves, we see it even in the most famous, right? Exact. And Les Masques Red was born in 2013, so it's a long time ago, and we realized that we've changed, so it was also right to follow our instincts a bit and we're going into a much nastier current, let's put it that way.

Ok, so it’s going to go more towards heavy sounds. Yes, it's a mix between progressive, modern progressive, and nu metal in some respects. Ok, I like it. This is my fault. It's okay, moreover nu metal is currently having a great comeback, in short there are lots of new bands offering nu metal, so it's current. Yes, I'm very happy because I come from that stuff, so I was born with System of a Down, in short everything from Limp Bizkit, so I'm very happy that they're coming back, the late 90's, early 2000's are coming back, it's beautiful. Yes, yes, yes, I bought pants like Sandra Nasic from Guano Apes the other day, I'm proud of this return of nu metal, listen to nu metal, it's beautiful. Exact.ly And above all I want to tell the bands that it is right to experiment, not only to the bands, to the musicians in general, to experiment, to try anything, even if it is not metal, if one always plays the same thing throughout his career, he stays there, there is no that something extra, many times you have to go outside your limits a little, try something new, maybe then it doesn't work, you can always go back, but no one puts you down if you try something else. Maybe there are some hardcore fans who really want it to always be the same as the first album, but in my opinion the artist must be free to experiment, to do what he feels in his heart. Absolutely yes, I also totally agree for another reason, that if we always get stuck on the same stuff, and if by chance we start to get bored, but we do it out of criterion, out of coherence, it could also happen that we don't have fun anymore. That's kind of what was happening to us. And the problem is that if we don't have fun anymore, the public will feel it, and regardless it will be a failure. Exactly.

I still haven't decided if my singing is ok or if that can kill someone. :-D Sometimes we really see world as illusion. And I sometimes try to imagine how I would feel withou fear. But sometimes it's hard to keep doing that. But is good to try. Because fear is often telling lies and we start believe it in moment of fear. And I don't think I panic from wasps but 8 wasps in room??? That is too much. I would be afraid too. I'm more scared from hornets, only 1 hornet and I don't want be close to it. And many people are scared from spiders, I have fear just from really big ones but few times I helped to save friend from spider, I just took spider away. Raw onion is evil.

Unfortunately, Gatto failed at being boring. I didn't fall asleep. So I will continue to listen to Nanowar of Steel. Yes, death will come for us all sooner or later. But some bands are even older than Nanowar of Steel. So maybe in very sad future when won't be any big bands what are now... Then people will go to see Nanowar of Steel instead and they will be finally the greatest metal band. But I hope I will see Nanowar of Steel before they get too much old. I couldn't go to Metalfest last year, they played there, but my friend was there. He bought for me their cd and they signed it and drew beautiful picture. It was very nice of them. Gatto has really interesting stories from many countries and is great that he didn't end in jail. And I must check some Jugoslavia rock and punk. I know from Serbia Rune band - heavy pagan metal and it was just side project from members from Mortal Kombat and Kamenolom. When I listened to it, I understood some words because it is slavic language. And I still don't know which videoclip from Nanowar of Steel is the best. Or the worst. :-D Sometimes are people maybe little scared from their songs but then they can't live without it. And even after year I sometimes see disco metal zombies perfectly dancing in the moonlight.

He will be so disappointed since he faild to be boring 😁. Listening to Nanowar of steel is a right thing to do! Yeah, they have still chances to become the greatest band in the world 🤘. I hope we both will see them live at some point 😊. Yes, he is an interesting person, and it's good he didn't end in jail. I also have to check some Jugoslavian rock. Their music videos are amazing, I could watch them all the time 😁.

I heard some songs from Factory of Art and it sounds super. And I wish them good luck with the new album. I think many people wish to be a cat in other life. What a life to rule the humans. That is strange when aren't many people at metal concerts in Finland. It is metal country. When I went on concerts here in the Czech Republic there were usually a lot of people at metal shows. Not always really many but not a few. Few times when I went on concert I was that first one who went close to the stage. Sometimes at begin of events I have very irrational fear what if other people are watching what I do. A band was playing in front of me and people were standing a few meters far away behind me.... :-D No, always later more people finally came closer too and at least I could be in front and see the band. I'm not tall too. I just remembered. Neonfly could be interesting band for interview.

Let's wait for their new album and hope success to them 😊. Cats have super good life, that's why 😁. I think it depends on the band and on the city, I remember years ago when Ensiferum had this acoustic tour and in Pori there were not many people attending the gig. I will check the band and arrange the interview/chat 😁.

Interesting interview. And she has great ideas for stories. Cats are really nice and fluffy. Cats can do everything, keep people awake and throw things down but they are always cute. Power metal is magic fantasy metal subgenre full of dragons, warriors and unicorns. It was the same for me, I realized there are fantasy stories in that songs. And after power metal I started listen to folk metal. I think power metal is more fantasy and folk metal is more mythology. But both are magical. Of course there are often other themes in that songs too. I still like these 2 metal subgenres the most. I agree it is good to be open minded. I travelled a week ago to Brno to see thrash folk band Vintage Wine. But that was the last band. There were 3 folk bands before them. I like folk metal but I don't usually listen to folk without metal. I was afraid of it. :-D No, it was very nice, it had a fantasy medieval atmosphere. And then played Vintage Wine, that was the wildest band at the event.

Their music is amazing. And they have interesting band name. It is so weird that 2000 was 24 years ago. Time is running too much fast. Cartoons are great. Now I'm watching Moomin from 1990. I have some Moomin books too. It is interesting to watch again cartoons that I saw before as a kid. I have seen something more scary then pineapple on pizza... Photo of kiwi on pizza. :-D
