absolutely! There are always many/creative ways that tree structures can be built. We may do a video on how our other (shorter) tree is setup. Also nothing permanent in the ground and very stable.

We haven't added it yet - we need to modify it to work with our more generic layout. Our personal show is a bit different as it covers 2 structures (house/shop) and is pretty wide. We try to modify the sequences to be a bit more traditional so mapping is easier!

You mentioned power balancing and power injection. Would you have a simple video showing how to accomplish this effectively?
@CharleesProps

sounds like a good video to discuss. Those terms are used interchangeably (even by us) but they are actually 2 different ways of ensuring pixels have enough power. Stay Tuned!

If im understanding when power planning you cant just take 30% current. Do i need to plan power at 100% current? Referring to evos
@CharleesProps
@CharleesProps 5 ай бұрын
That depends on the type of pixels. Standard WS2811 pixels you can assume that 30% brightness means they will draw, at full white, 30% of their normal draw. In our personal show we don't push much past that in the even of a pixel failure, which could "bypass" that brightness limit and pull a higher draw. Both EVO and DUO pixels are native 12v - so they're a little different than your typical 2811. The EVO pixels pull full draw whether on, off, or any brightness effect (in actuality they do pull a little less if brightness is lowered, but you should factor a constant draw with EVO's).

Yes, as we work through them. We use a generic layout so we need to modify the sequence from our personal display to the generic layout.

There's nothing to stop you using 5v or 12v with either method. The voltage is irrelevant. Voltage only comes into it when working out power injection or balancing.

Thank you so much for your video. I already have a 12v mega tree and I am planning to add a second mega tree. I am debating whether or not to use 5v pixels or 12v pixels. I heard that 5v pixels has a lower failure rate. Based on our two megatrees, which one is having more pixel failure, the 5v or the 12 v. Thanks.

Nice explanation. Another advantage of your 12V setup is there are 4 PSU, so a PSU fail is less likely to dim the whole works. 💡 Look at strut pipe clamps to anchor the controller to the pipe
@CharleesProps
@CharleesProps 7 ай бұрын
Well - that depends on how you look at it. The 4 PSU's in the 12v tree each have 25% of the tree connected and the other 75% of the tree is not connected to that particular PSU. So, if the PSU were to go out, "dimming" wouldn't happen, simply 25% of the tree would stop working. The 5V tree is similar in that it has 2 PSU's - so 50% would go out. The PSU's don't provide equal power to all pixels to back one another up. The strap on the 5V tree/controller box has served me well!

Very difficult to see black props against black background. Also black props are ugly in practice.

I like the GS8208... The backup data line, constant current, nice brightness, and the Gamma Correction seems to give it an advantage on dimming effects and color curves.

What is the base frame made of?
@CharleesProps
@CharleesProps 8 ай бұрын
The center base was a fixture (free) from a store that went out of business. It's a large plate steel with a welded gusseted steel "nut" and a threaded pipe. Our center pipe then sleeves over that pipe. There's a unistrut that bolts to that pipe, then to some brackets I welded to the steel plate, then out to the modified round haybale feeder.

Just an FYI, I have an EFL Designs Globe NSR and a ShowStopper Snowflake (each with 750 pixels) and I have EVO pixels in them with no power injection and no issues. I am only running them at 30% brightness but that is plenty bright.

So it looks like your 12V tree is built using a triangle truss. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Could you post some pictures or make a video of that setup? And, how do you like it compared to the pole style setup?

Did you do any measurements of the power / amps required for the Duo pixels? The site says they are approx 1/3 of a standard WS2811. While you do need to do the power injection I'm wondering if overall the Duo uses less power.
@CharleesProps
@CharleesProps 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have capacity to easily read the amperage draw. While there may be truth that they require less power as being native 12v - you need to remember that they will act like 5v in the sense they will need power balancing or shorter extensions to combat voltage drop. Further the number of pixels per port isn't really upped either since the limitation is the FPS, not the power.
@terrysworkbench
@terrysworkbench 10 ай бұрын
Voltage drop is going to be worse at 5v. 12v pixels draw less current. therefore have less voltage drop. If you were going to use less ports, that require power injection, 12v would be better.
@CharleesProps
@CharleesProps 10 ай бұрын
12V pixels, for typical WS2811, actually draw more current because they're actually a 5v pixel that are individually dropped to 5v using either a resistor or a regulator. This doesn't apply to native 12v pixels (like EVO and 8208's) - but most 12v pixels are this way. This, in part, is why the 5V pixels actually take less power. Further, the wire size and length of extension will play a big part of the voltage drop through resistance in the lines.
@terrysworkbench
@terrysworkbench 10 ай бұрын
@CharleesProps Yes. Almost half the current draw @12v with 12v pixels. I will do a video. Again, I was surprised too.
@jdueheue

Two questions here: you say 12v pixels consume same power as 5v pixel, since they dissipate power through the voltage drop resistor… so why do you need power injection for 5v strings but not for 12v strings? Regarding the many failures you mention you had with 5v bullet strings, I had same problem with an indoor installation, from 500 bullets after around 50 hours of usage, 3 have died already. Other people say they never had problems. Is it a matter of luck which lot you get, or are there different qualities sold?

@@CharleesProps Hello, I'm very happy to have found your videos . I'm waiting for all my stuffs (12 v Strings and components) to be received from China and USA (Falcon F16V5) and will assembled with a trampoline base already bought; It is the first time that I see trees with such kind of diy base as mine. Here in Quebec Canada we have a lot of snow in Christmas Time on the ground so it is a must to install the base tree at 2 feet from the ground. I follow you for sure.

Thank you. I was curious about the evo and duo and this was very informative. I am still a noob, but I am going to throw it out there that the flickering in the evo's is due to the smaller gauged wire.
