Naw…. I ride my DRZ400S everywhere, I’ve been on knarly trails, hill climbs and down hills, it can do anything I want it to, been deep in the forest and deep into the desert. Hasn’t let me down. A little heavy sure, adds to the nice adrenaline dump at the end of the ride I say.

The motors share the bulk of the same DNA, but are offered in completely different states of tune. Their seat-of-the-pants experience is akin to Jekyll & Hyde. 400&E models vs S/SM motor differences: 400&E have a lighter weight machined crankshaft that further compliments the free revving over-square bore. 400&E have a thinner head gasket and thus run a higher compression ratio 400&E cam shafts shift the motor’s torque profile further up in RPM to maximize HP. The S/SM cams maximize idle and partial throttle torque for street use and “dank woolies” None of the DRZ models have a cush drive rear hub, but the S/SM motors have a spring mass damper on the counter balancer drive gear that adds flywheel weight and damping, further smoothing low rpm behavior, at the expense of some additional noise. 400&E models have a 39mm flat slide pumper carb that favors mid to top end power, S/SM have a 36mm CV carb that favors off-idle torque and fine throttle control. 400&E models have a 1mm larger exhaust header pipe and a comparatively free-flowing muffler. 400&E have a more aggressive ignition map that in combination with their compression ratio requires the use of premium gas. That’s just the motors..the chassis differences throw even more wood onto the fire. 😮

The DRZ400?? The original ‘00-‘04 kick start only, 40hp fire breathing, off-road missile? Absolutely not. The stump-pulling DRZ400 “S” model on the other hand?…..(steel gas tank and cap, E start, battery, bar ends, locks, full lights, mirrors, pillion pegs, full subframe) no more heavier than any other factory dual sport of the same displacement and capability. Problem is, folks blur the line all too often when a legit dual-sport shows up in group ride with a pack of dirt-only bikes….and people start swapping machines, which instantly draws comments about weight differences.

The thing the DRZ has over all the other enduro models is the LONG service intervals and reliability. It really is in a league of it's own.

The seat height is my problem with most bikes, I have a 29 or 30 inch inseam and I liked riding and I liked cross country type stuff, but more technical stuff I would always fall over on because I couldn't reach the ground. I also like the linear power that 4 strokes have, especially FI bikes. Which one of these is best for my situation?

@BaronBoar
@BaronBoar 4 күн бұрын
@@davydtolyarenok3704 Yeah my balance is fine, when you are trying to go up a slippery slope and not able to reach the ground sucks when your bike can go forward anymore and it slips out from under you and you nail your head on the ground. Even with helmets on you get a concussion. I have had too many concussions already, and have had almost died once after hitting my head when I passed out once, while doing things that require a helmet and dirt bikes, I don't need another one just because I can't reach riding on terrain where balance means nothing.

@RWWRENTAL 12 күн бұрын
lol every single TTR250 burns some oil in the world ha ha. Kind of common. If you do really want to fix it, you will most likely need to do a top end. But if it has good compression, I would just leave it alone. As long as you are not going through an entire quart a day or something. I would check your air filter inlet as well make sure no dust and a good seal. motors tend to burn oil when dust and particles get in

After 1500km on my 450L, with the ECU changed to Vortex and the FMF pipe fitted, the Honda still randomly flamed out. I was a devoted Honda man, and was devastated in my purchase with Honda`s consistent reliability crushed. I`m considering the KTM 500.

I´m in the same question... DRZ 400S vs KLX300. I ride 50% on roads going at 60/65mph, 50% gravel. 300-400km per riding day. Some times in altitude (3000-4000 meters). Any suggestion?

Well I'm ditching my 501 for the 701. Definitely love the 500 platform, it's just about perfect. Except for those long highway miles, not that the 700 is a good for highways, but it's engine can handle it and doesn't struggle as much.

If only Suzuki could figure out a way to get their 1991 TS200 dual sport bike passing emmissions testing as that bike was truly the funnest buke i ever owned. 255lbs and could go anywhere a KDX 200 could go yet it probably cornered better as is felt like a heavy RM125! also had a reasonable seat height. This is a real plus for shorter riders when riding off road and is probably the main reason the little crf feels better off road. I question why there are no 500cc dual sports with lower seat height like the old XL500? As i age i want something to wheelie at will until my time is up

So you ‘Hate your KLX 250’ because it’s not junk so you don’t have to play mechanic on it, which by the way, sounds like at the time of the video, is was dang near a free bike it kept its resale so well.... Oooookay...🙄 Pro tip, get into Snowmobiling, you’ll lose literally thousands a year, and no doubt that pile of crap will make you a mechanic (and great friends with your banks loan officer) you’ll love it! Right up you alley. You’re welcome.

IIRC, years back during a rebuild, I removed 2 out of the 3 layers of the head gasket out of my 87' TW. The extra compression made roll-on wheelies possible on stock hearing. I could frequently hit 80mph as well.

There are lighter bikes out there but they don't have the torque the E has. They require you to shift all the time and rev the guts out of the engine to go anywhere. To get the torque you could buy a 450 but it will get you hurt because its power is un-useable for the average rider in the woods. The DRZ can also be ridden for a very long time without having to rebuild the top end every 150 hours like the other bikes out there. People say the E is heavy but actually its on par or lighter than the average japanese 450 dual sport. The E is just the perfect overall machine even now after 24 years.

I think its great on any fire road,, narrow ATV trail, and even single track, as long as it is not too deeply rutted or requires traversing tall ledges. At least on mine the clutch is more on and off than giving a nice friction zone, and the clearance and suspension travel can be outmatched by really rough terrain. It's a great bike for wandering off trail, or through a flooded pasture and along a ditch bank.

I would have kept my DRZ forever if it wasn't stolen. That being said, I found myself looking for a 6th gear that it didn't have. If Suzuki made a new one with a little more power, less weight, EFI, and a 6 speed with the same reliability, i would buy one. So would a couple hundred thousand other people, because they could sell it for another 20 years.

simple for me , DRZ has way better after market selections and parts , way cheaper, more power :). if I plan to do more road, trow 41 T sprocket , 50/50 , 44T , tech dirt , 47T.
