Sometimes you can get away with a faster FSB overclock (K6-2+, K6-III, K6-III+) by disabling the motherboard cache in the BIOS, because the cache chip(s) can't keep up with the bus. But as you said, things running on the AGP and PCI bus can also crash due to being so far out of spec :) Great video, love this era of hardware!

Thank you for sharing! AT style cases are rare these days, but this is a great solution! Especially the i/o back plane looks great! Is there any chance you would be able to share that file? Thank you for your response!

! the reason that this pc doesnt have an integrated mouse function is because it actually CAME with a mouse that has the same branding, i have one of these computers, its pretty neat and has a slightly asymmetrical design with the left button being a little bigger by extending in front of the scroll wheel

Nice informative video. I have the smaller GA-5AA board which I plan to recap as it has a couple of bulging caps. The asus and gigabyte boards were to me the pick of the bunch.

Since I already had an HP t5530 running 98SE, I decided to pick one of these up for a different experiment: How convincingly can Windows XP be made to fake Windows 98SE? The answer is "Beautifully well once the login process is finished". (You go 95% of the way there using Windows XP's built-in theming options... including using the System control panel to apply "performance" tweaks to turn off things like transparent backgrounds on desktop icon labels, and then apply the Inexperience patcher to fix things like the Start Menu icon and use TweakUI for XP and X-Teq X-Setup Pro to apply the last few registry tweaks that have no UI by default... just remember to turn off things like the indexing service, BootOptimizeFunction, and NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate when running XP off flash memory to avoid spending write cycles on mitigations for problems you won't have anyway.)

I believe you missed something and I was actually looking forward to seeing how you managed it. 😃When it comes to those adapters that let you use ATX power supplies with an AT motherboard, they bring out the green and black wires for the power button - PS-ON and GROUND respectively. The problem is that the power button on the ATX case is momentary, while the PS-ON signal from the power supply needs to be grounded the whole time the computer is running. To sum it up, the way the PC works at the end of the video is - you press the power button on the case, the computer comes on, you take the finger off the power button, the computer shuts off. You'd need to keep your finger on the power button indefinitely, to keep the computer running. The way this needs to be solved is by physically changing the power button on the case from a momentary switch to a toggle switch that keeps the circuit closed after being pushed and that's easier said than done. To keep it pretty, you'd need to find a toggle switch the same size and form factor as the momentary one mounted on the case.

Thank you very much for your videos about the Wyse Cx0. I also have one of these thin clients here and now I want to make a Windows 98 retro system out of it. I found your videos very useful and helpful. I am 64 years old and have seen the entire development, from the 286 to the 486 and all successors, as well as from DOS to Windows 11. I'm sure i'll feel nostalgic when building a Windows 98 system. 😃

If the sound card in the thin client or the USB sound card have a line in input, one option would be to connect the output of one sound card to the line in of the other. I have an old Pentium retro PC with two sound cards (ISA for DOS and PCI for Windows 98) and this worked very well.

You talk about this CPU 'not being as fast as you'd think' based on it's design vs other CPUs of the era, but honestly, if you look at benchmarks of that G-T56N APU compared to what would have been commonly used with XP, it's actually pretty decent. If you consider that the Northwood Pentium 4's would have come out around the same time XP was released, and the Passmark score of a Pentium 4 3.6 GHz CPU is around 315, an Athlon XP 2800+ CPU (similar release date) has a score of 260, and an Athlon 64 x2 3400+, which came out much later is a 531, the G-T56N's score of 484 is actually very impressive, especially considering it's only an 18W TDP vs the Pentium 4 3.6's 115W and the Athlon XP 2800's 89W. This thin client is perfectly suited to running XP, IMHO.

The problem with the PC world is old games should but don't always like newer and faster hardware and/or Operating Systems. Windows ME wasn't that bad but it just had limitations on Memory and Hard Drive size. Some of my old games only run on old OSs.

Some people don't understand I don't think. I see a lot of people installing Windows 98SE on absolutely everything including 486 computers but me personally, I wouldn't install Windows 98 on anything below a Pentium II/below 300MHz. Windows 95 is for Pentium 1 / Pro, MMX etc and MS DOSS 6.22 / Windows 3.11 for 486 and 386 PC's. Window ME I think was an ok OS and not as bad as people made it out to be.

Installing Windows 98 to a compact flash is never a good idea unless you don't mind changing it out and doing another install when the CF card dies. They generally don't last long being used as hard drives, especially with no TRIM support. The same goes for SD cards too. Its better to use a SATA to IDE adapter with a SATA HDD or SSD if you want something more permanent.

This resonates so hard! The first PC I built myself was a K6-III on, now you've triggered the memory, a GA-5AX - with a Matrox G400! Just like you said, I kind of felt the need to go with the underdog or something different - both in choosing the AMD, and in choosing Matrox over 3Dfx or ATi. All bought from Scan or Insight, after pouring over the ads in whatever PC magazines I was buying from WHSmith ... And, exactly like you said, I also find the compact rectangular form factor of these early Super 7 ATX boards weirdly pleasing!

I noticed that NEC LCD is a 17 inch. This means that it has an aspect ratio of 5:4 and a native screen resolution of 1280 by 1024. So, make sure that you have Windows 98 SE and your software set to these settings. If you are running older games or software that does not support 1280 by 1024, then you need to switch to a 15 inch LCD. They have an aspect ratio of 4:3 and a native screen resolution of 1024 by 768. ALWAYS use an LCD at its native aspect ratio and screen resolution if you want a great looking picture and fast performance. I talk more about this, as well as proper DPS for gaming, on my channel. Anyway, this video would be good if I did not see your moving hand so much. It is very distracting. It would be better if you sat next to your computer and have the camera aimed at you. This way you can talk to your audience and we can see what you look like. This makes for a much better video. 😃

Thanks for the tip! I tend to only use the NEC LCD on the bench for testing so matching the resloution to the native resolution of the screen isn't always top of my list. Plus I don't want to have the stuff on screen too small for the camera. If I have an LCD set up permanently for a system, I always try and run at native resolution where I can.

I couldn't disagree more with @hanscampbell. Your presentation style is great. I think it is hilarious that he's giving advice on shooting videos given that he thinks people want to spend an hour watching somebody install a PSU and fans into a case. Long videos are only OK if its interesting. This Win98 build, so far, has been a great watch.
